Veteran folk star Joan Baez is taking part in a tree-sitting protest to try and prevent a 14 acre urban farm from being demolished. Baez, 65, is one of several protestors occupying the tree in south Los Angeles in shifts to prevent developers from cutting it down. Hundreds of farmers now face eviction after non-profit group The Trust For Public Land only managed to raise $6.35 million (GBP3.6 million) of the $16.35 million (GBP9.1 million) needed to buy the site. The deadline to find the cash expired on Monday (22MAY06). Circa 350 families look after small plots of fruit and vegetables on the site. Most are immigrants from Central America.
