J.J. Abrams spoke out at the premiere of his much-hyped science fiction thriller Super 8 this week, claiming that an announcement regarding a second Star Trek film would be coming soon.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Super 8, written and directed by J.J. Abrams and produced by Steven Spielberg, is set for a $35 million opening weekend and will be one of the blockbuster hits of the summer. Earlier in the week at a press junket for Super 8, J.J. ABRAMS had told Cinema Blend: "The next thing we're working on, and hopefully we'll be able to pass information out sooner or later, is the next Star Trek." Abrams was quizzed about this by MTV at the premiere for the movie, and stated: "We're working on that (Star Trek) right now.I hope to have some information soon." He also said that he would most likely return as director, quashing rumours that scheduling conflicts would make it impossible.
In the meantime, he said he was fully focused on Super 8, which has generally been received well by critics, and is out now in the USA. The film opens in the UK on 5th August. There is no release date news for Star Trek 2, but Abrams comments are sure to generate excitement after he breathed life into the franchise with the 2009 Star Trek movie.
