Joy Trailer

Joy Mangano always wanted to be an inventor and, after getting married, having three children and then getting divorced, she finally decides to follow her dream. It's often the male entrepreneurs that people remember in history, but Joy proves that women can be just as powerful as she rises to become president of her own company, Ingenious Designs, and invents the cutting edge cleaning system, 'Miracle Mop'; all while taking care of a family on her own and running into some difficult circumstances along the way. Betrayed, occasionally on the wrong side of the law and suffering from many losses, Joy is the living embodiment of what doesn't kill you makes you stronger - and with millions of dollars in sales, she's certainly stronger.

In 2008, Daya Fernandez thought of a fun little variation on the traditional game of dominos. Said game involves players using the pieces to make 'movie reels' - an idea that has certainly found a home with Hollywood's elite. Over the past eight years, a Hollywood Domino Gala has taken place in London, New York, the Cannes Film Festival, Puerto Rico, but the most important an prestigious event on the calendar takes place in in Los Angeles, on the Thursday before each year's Oscar ceremony.

Heroes: Season One Review

Excellent
I came to the Heroes ball late. I watched a bit of the first episode on original release, got distracted, and gave up. Not until the first full season was released on DVD did I catch up on what I'd missed: An excellent supernatural drama filled with interesting, unique characters, exciting stories, and fun plot twists.

Basically, Heroes is a comic book come to life, telling us of average people who suddenly find they have special, superhuman powers. A cheerleader, Claire (Hayden Panettiere), discovers she can heal any injury (it's a good thing, too, she'd be dead about 20 times over if she couldn't). A congressional candidate (Adrian Pasdar) can fly. A cop (Greg Grunberg) can read minds. And so on. The story that evolves over the 23 episodes of season one ultimately concern a serial killer, Sylar (Zachary Quinto), who is preying on superheroes and sucking out their powers for himself, and a nuclear bomb that is foretold by one hero to decimate New York City. Somehow the heroes are involved... but they might be able to stop it.

Phat Girlz Review

Terrible
In a world of skinny bitches, the aggressively smart-mouthed Jazmin Biltmore is larger than life and pretty damned bitter about it. Stand-up comedian, author, and actress Mo'Nique has made her career out of fat jokes, and she hits that same one note, ad nauseum, in Phat Girlz. Her Jazmin is an aspiring fashion designer riddled with self-loathing, not only because her tablefull of diet pill bottles is doing little to get her down to her idealized size 5, but because she is doomed to unhappiness since, apparently, no one makes sexy clothes for the plus size lady, and without them, how is a woman supposed to trap a man and therefore finally have a shot at happiness?

While you chew on that stunning display of gender politics, Phat Girlz continues to lob out broad slapstick humor - including an honest to God insult-off featuring fat jokes vs. you-so-ugly ones - and utterly one-note cliché characters. The plot, such as it is, finally gets going when Jazmin wins a trip to a posh Palm Springs resort and brings her two best friends, her skinny-bitch cousin Mia (Joyful Drake) and her fellow "sexy succulent," the reserved, schoolmarmish Stacy (Kendra C. Johnson). Jazmin catches the eye of Tunde (Jimmy Jean-Louis), a Nigerian doctor visiting for a medical conference, who likes his women "thick." Despite Jazmin's tendency to rudeness and blatant grilling of him, his intentions, and his beliefs, Tunde pursues her with a single-mindedness only found in romantic comedies.
