Jazz guitar great KENNY BURRELL was honoured with a four-hour birthday tribute concert in Los Angeles last week (02DEC06). Burrell, who fielded praise from Jimi Hendrix and DUKE ELLINGTON in the past, turned 75 last month (NOV06) and was performing alongside a troupe of fellow jazz musicians at the University of California at LA's Royce Hall to celebrate the occasion. The UCLA professor apologised to the audience for the running time of the musical extravaganza, but said, "Time flies when you're having fun." The guitarist released his first album in 1951, and played with jazz greats DIZZY GILLESPIE, COLEMAN HAWKINS, John Coltrane, SONNY ROLLINS and BENNY GOODMAN during his career.
