Pretty In Pink Review

Excellent
The youth of today -- the kids just entering their teens -- will they regard Molly Ringwald as a teen dramedy princess, or will she be known as a B-list queen of cheesecake horror films?

Pretty in Pink stands out as the perennial ladies' favorite from the Brat Pack era, with Ringwald turning in an unforgettable role (and role model) as a poor girl named Andie who takes care of dad (Harry Dead Stanton playing a stereotypical drunk), makes great grades (and her own clothes), all while finding herself pursued by no fewer than three guys. The real competition comes down to a war between the rich kid (Andrew McCarthy) and Andie's fellow poor-boy (Jon Cryer, whose wannabe hipster "Duckie" has become a legend of the era).

On The Edge (1985) Review

Good
For 100 years, the Dipsea has been one of running's most grueling races -- seven miles along unpaved forest trails from inland to the Pacific Ocean in Mill Valley, California, going up and down two mountains en route.

On the Edge uses the Dipsea (here called the Cielo Sea) as the backdrop for this sports fable, and it's a far cry from films like Chariots of Fire. Bruce Dern (himself a real runner) stars as Wes Holman, a disgraced athlete who blew the whistle on amateur payola and ended up taking the fall for it. Despite external pressures and being a little out of shape, Holman trains for the race, the reasons and motivations of which form the core of the movie.

The Peacemaker Review

Very Good
High stakes intrigue when nine nuclear missiles go missing in post-breakup Russia. Kidman and Clooney are hammy, yes, but for all its flaws, The Peacemaker is a lot of fun. Favorite line, Kidman yelling, "Take the shot!"

The Bridges Of Madison County Review

Weak
How to waste two fine actors in a piece of Hallmark wannabe crap? Bridges of Madison County provides us a textbook case of the above, with Eastwood and Streep trying to cash in on the craze that made a million housewives swoon and sickened the rest of us. Utter pap, redeemed only by the professionalism of its stars in sub-standard material.
