Jim Carrey Files Court Documents Responding To Lawsuits Over Ex's Suicide

Jim Carrey

Jim Carrey is taking legal action of his own as he fights two separate lawsuits brought against him that accuse him of complicity in his ex-girlfriend’s suicide.

The 54 year old actor has filed a 10-page document detailing his relationship with 30 year old Cathriona White, a stylist and actress whom he dating on and off for nearly three years before she committed suicide in September 2015.

It hits back at claims brought by her mother, Brigid Sweetman, and estranged husband, Mark Burton, who have both brought lawsuits against Carrey accusing him giving White three sexually transmitted diseases, and that he provided her with the prescription pills she used to take her own life.

Jim Carrey's Lawyer Brands Accusations That He Gave Ex-Girlfriend STDs Before Her Suicide As "Outrageous"

Jim Carrey

Legal representatives for Jim Carrey have branded as “outrageous” the recent accusation made by his ex-girlfriend’s current husband that the actor gave her STDs before she committed suicide.

The wrongful death lawsuit filed earlier this week against Carrey, by Cathriona White’s estranged husband Mark Burton, was amended on Thursday (September 22nd) to include an allegation that White was suicidal because she had a sexually transmitted disease she believed the Hollywood star had given to her.

White, an Irish-born make-up artist, was Carrey’s on-off girlfriend for three years before she was found dead from a prescription drug overdose in September 2015 at the age of 30. Carrey acted as a pallbearer at her funeral.

Rubble Kings Review

Excellent

The social and economic strife in New York in the sixties and seventies gave birth to one of the most influential and popular subculture's in recent memory; hip-hop grew out of poverty, segregation and division, with DJs, MCs, breakdancers and graffiti artists providing a positive creative outlet for the troubled neighbourhoods all over the big apple. The South Bronx is incredibly important in the emergence of hip-hop culture, but before there was the abundance of music that exists now there were the Rubble Kings.

Directed by Shan Nicholson, this documentary tells the all-important story of the Ghetto Brothers, a historical gang active in the 1970s. They were one of many, and Rubble Kings touches on a host of other groups that were also active in this period, with first-hand experiences relayed from a variety of talking heads that were in the midst of the street culture some 40 years ago. The gritty imagery of tagged trains, neighbourhood riots and the anti-police attitude that was an undercurrent felt by all those growing up in the Bronx is showcased from the outset; drawing parallels between Walter Hill's 1979 motion-picture The Warriors, the famous 'can you dig it' scene actually went down in reality. 'Yellow' Benji Medendez, a founding member of the Ghetto Brothers, as well as Carlos 'Karate Charlie' Suarez (who held a formidable reputation) speak with intelligence about the conditions that saw gangs grow in popularity, and sparked a multicultural revolution against the authoritative powers who disregarded the interests of the poor and troubled.

The 60s is widely known as the peace era, but clearly America wasn't entirely populated by hippies and liberal thinkers; the violence and hardship in New York's boroughs was on a steady incline, reaching a catalyst in the early 70s, where the majority of Rubble Kings' story takes place. The South Bronx was a symbol of early decay. The situation emerged out of the shambolic Cross-Bronx expressway, a major freeway that cut up areas and divided neighbourhoods without consideration for residents. As they always do, the poor felt the squeeze, and landlords burnt down their own properties for insurance money, resulting in black families being left homeless and in severe poverty. Homicides increased, and the majority of income earned in the BX was acquired through criminal activity; street gangs that took influence from the Hells Angels ran the area, sporting swastikas and other offensive anti-establishment imagery like the rebels before them. Hip-hop pioneer Afrika Bambaata speaks about the pride gangs members had for their crew, and with poor living conditions breeding increased violence, gangs were spreading up like wildfire throughout New York, comprised of all creeds and colours; the segregation went beyond race to class and social standing.

Jim Carrey Makes A Spectacular Return In 'Dumb And Dumber To', But Who Really Is Dumber?

Jim Carrey Jeff Daniels Farrelly Brothers Peter Farrelly Bobby Farrelly

It's a question that no doubt every 'Dumb and Dumber' fan has considered at some point; one of them had got to be dumber than the other, right? But which one? Jim Carrey and his co-star Jeff Daniels pondered the question ahead of the 'Dumb And Dumber To' release.

Jim Carrey plays Lloyd Christmas in the comedy; a character who was left heartbroken in the 1994 original movie and has remained to this day in a caring facility in a 20-year prank on his friend Harry Dunne (Jeff Daniels), who himself has got his own problems this time round when he discovers he has a long lost daughter. Talking about whether or not the characters know that they're dumb, Carrey admits: 'I don't think they consider it for a second. There's no self-examination going on there at all. They're just selfish children. [Harry's] a little sweeter than my character, my character's really selfish.' And while co-director Peter Farrelly admits that they 'each think that the other one is dumb', the question is - who's the most intellectually challenged?

Jim Carrey Jeff Daniels Bobby Farrelly Peter Farrelly

It's been a long time coming for the anticipated sequel to 1994's ridiculous comedy 'Dumb And Dumber', and it certainly feels it. Star Jim Carrey admits getting back into action was strangely nostalgic twenty years on.

Directors Bobby Farrelly and Peter Farrelly aren't straying too far from the original premise with 'Dumb And Dumber To' by the looks of things, with everything from haircuts to cars staying appropriately the same for the Peter Pan style comedy figures. 'It was very much like an H.G. Wells time-travel thing the first day when I put on the old costume', Jim Carrey revealed, when cast and crew eventually decided on sticking to the original. 'We tried some new things in the wardrobe fittings but I kept saying, 'Nope, nope, nope.' Ultimately, I just wore the same thing. It felt right.'

Jennifer Lawrence To Feature In Cameo Role For 'Dumb And Dumber To'

Jennifer Lawrence Jim Carrey Jeff Daniels Kathleen Turner

Jennifer Lawrence has said in the past that one of her favourite comedy film of all time is the 1994 Farrelly brothers road trip movie Dumb and Dumber, so it really comes as little surprise to learn that the actress has jumped on board for the upcoming sequel to the film. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Oscar-winner will appear briefly in a flashback sequence, in which she will play a younger version of Kathleen Turner's character, Fraida Feltcher.

Jeff Daniels: "Forget The Dumb And Dumber Toilet Scene, That's Nothing!"

Jeff Daniels Jim Carrey Farrelly Brothers

Jeff Daniels has teased a couple of details about the forthcoming Dumb & Dumber sequel, claiming directors Bobby and Peter Farrelly are ready to gross out the audience more than they did with the original's famous 'toilet scene.'

Daniels was on-hand to chat about the sequel after picking up an Emmy award on Sunday, for his altogether more stylish turn as Will McAvoy in Aaron Sorkin's The Newsroom. The 58-year-old claimed he was "gonna party 'til dawn and then I'm gonna get on a plane and go to Atlanta and start shooting 'Dumb and Dumber 2."

It prompted several questions about the anticipated sequel, titled Dumb & Dumber To, which is now finally on track after several delays. "The intellectual free-fall from Will McAvoy to Harry Dunne ... imagine if you will," joked Daniels about his not-so-smart Dumb and Dumber character.

Stephen Hawking Has No Illusions About The Afterlife: "A Fairytale For People Afraid Of The Dark"

Stephen Hawking Jim Carrey Benedict Cumberbatch

Stephen Hawking has long been one of the most influential and iconic figures in modern science. So it should come as little surprise to learn that the black hole expert has no hang ups about any kind of life after death. At the premier of the new film Hawking, a documentary covering the physicist's life, Hawking told reporters that when his time comes, he is doubtful that he wil arrive at any pearly gates or fiery pit.

Stephen Hawking
Hawking is having the double-whammy film threatment, with the documentary being followed up by a biopic soon

"The convention of an afterlife is a fairytale for people afraid of the dark," the 72-year-old bluntly put it at the Cambridge premier, as quoted by the Huffington Post. Whilst his spirituality may be all but non-existent, he did admit at the premier that of all his publications, his best-selling A Brief History of Time was his favourite. In the book, Hawking theorises the possibility of a sentient, Creator existing amongst the chaos of the Universe. In the book, he attempts to explain "the laws of nature and history of the Universe, in particular whether it had a creator."

Hawking Review

Good

Stephen Hawking proves to be an entertaining storyteller in this autobiographical documentary in which, with the help of two cowriters, he takes us on a trip through his life. It's a fascinating narrative, peppered with witty anecdotes and pithy observations. But it feels perhaps a bit too triumphant, and only rarely lets us see the man behind the famous public persona.

Hawking tells his own story, starting with his birth into an academic Oxford family and early fascination with the cosmos. He found school and university rather easy, and it wasn't until he started his PhD at Cambridge that he had his first eureka moment. It was also at this time, aged 21, when he was diagnosed with motor neurone disease and given just three years to live. But the condition developed slower than expected, so he married his girlfriend Jane and continued his studies. And over the following 50 years he has completely changed the way we understand the universe.

There are several key recurring themes here, as Hawking reveals his thoughts about science, culture and sex with humour and insight. He also lets us see his ongoing desire for recognition in his field. This is what led him to battle through the writing of his international bestseller A Brief History of Time, and also why he took a memorable guest-starring role on The Simpsons. The film recounts both experiences, as well as a hilarious TV appearance with Carrey and his friendships with everyone from Steven Spielberg to Barack Obama.

The book remained in the bestseller list for 4 years, entering into the Guinness Book of Records and selling 10 million copies across the world in 40 different languages. As loved and respected as he is, his life has been far from easy after being diagnosed with motor neurone disease at the age of 21 and drastically exceeding his life expectancy by 50 years despite now being barely able to make any movement and having to communicate with a speech generating device. Justin Timberlake To Star As The Riddler? He's Game For The Villainous Role, But Is Hollywood?

Justin Timberlake Ben Affleck Matt Damon Jim Carrey

Whilst Justin Timberlake was cooped up in the studio for Fresh 102.7's Jim and Kim Show this Tuesday (27 August), the singer/actor gave his fellow Hollywood heavy-weight Ben Affleck the thumbs up to portray Gotham City's most famous son, Bruce Wayne, a.k.a. Batman. The subject of whether JT would be interested in being a superhero at some point inevitably came up, which apparently he has no interest in. Super villain on the other hand...

Justin Timberlake

As reported by E! News, Timberlake was discussing his upcoming action flick Runner Runner, in which he stars alongside Affleck, when he was asked whether or not he'd be interested in squeezing into some spandex to fight off crime. Asked whether he'd be interested in starring as Batman's sidekick Robin (seeing as Matt Damon ruled it out), an unenthusiastic JT said that there wasn't a "chance in hell" of him playing a caped crime-fighter. He continued, "I ain't playin' Robin. I have no aspiration to ever be a superhero in a movie. Now VILLAIN! Ill tell you the villain I want to play more than anything because I grew up loving Batman, funny enough, is the Riddler. The Riddler is my favorite villain."

Kick Ass 2… Doesn’t Kick Ass!? Oh No! At Least Chloe Moretz Is Good

Chloe Moretz Jim Carrey

Given that the original movie was so good, when we asked the question: can Kick Ass 2 possibly be better than the first?, we were asking a rhetorical question, or at least we thought we were. As it turns out, Kick Ass kicked Kick Ass 2’s ass.

Chloe Moretz as Hit Girl

Mark Miller – the creator of Kick Ass – even answered our then-rhetorical question. “Could 'Kick Ass 2' Be Even Better Than The First? Answer: YES... VERY VERY POSSIBLY!” he Tweeted in response to us, but alas, if the critics are doing their jobs properly, it’s not quite the film the original managed to be.

Jim Carrey Reaches Out To Gun-Owners, Though Weapons Stance Remains

Jim Carrey

Hollywood actor Jim Carrey has reached out to gun-owners following his slew of Twitter tirades over the past year. The Dumb & Dumber star first vented his anger at owners of assault weapons in 2012, following the Aurora, Colorado, movie theater shooting that left 12 dead and 70 injured.

Shortly at the Newtown massacre that left 20 students and 6 adults dead, Carrey wrote on his Twitter account that anyone, “who would run out to buy an assault rifle after the Newtown massacre has very little left in their body or soul worth protecting.” The actor has also stated his intention to pull out of promotional duties for his upcoming movie Kick Ass 2, on account of its violent themes. Carrey made a point of noting he made the film a month before the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Connecticut.

But, on Sunday (July 7, 2013), Carrey tried to defuse the on-going battle between himself and American gun-owners, tweeting: “Asslt rifle fans, I do not agree wth u, nor do I fear u but I do love u and I'm sorry tht in my outrage I called you names. That was wrong” (sic). He added: “Btw I don't need a crisis mgr, just a conscience. Calling ppl names is inappropriate but my position on assault weapons hasn't changed.”

'Kick Ass 2' Does Exactly 'What It Says On The Tin', So Why Did Jim Carrey Withdraw His Support?

Jim Carrey Aaron Johnson Chloe Moretz Star Wars

Jim Carrey has withdrawn his support from Kick-Ass 2 claiming, via Twitter, that 'in all good conscience I cannot support that level of violence'. He claims the reason behind his decision to withdraw is due to the Sandy Hook shootings.

The Sandy Hook shootings took place at a high school in December 2012. Twenty students and six members of teaching staff were murdered by a lone gun-man. The incident caused an outcry for gun laws in the US to be restricted.;

Since the shootings, Carrey has been one of the loudest advocates of restricted gun laws. He claims that as a result of these events and his own political opinion he no longer wishes to support Kick-Ass 2, whereby he will still be appearing in the completed film but will not be attending any publicity events which promote it.

Has Jim Carrey Shot Himself In The Foot With 'Kick-Ass 2' Renunciation?

Jim Carrey Aaron Johnson Chloe Moretz Christopher Mintz-Plasse Donald Faison

Jim Carrey will next star in the much-anticipated sequel to 2010's Kick-Ass, imaginatively called Kick-Ass 2, which is due out later this summer. While the rest of the cast and crew get ready to promote the film and do their bit to ensure it is a success, Carrey has decided in an act of non-violent protest that he will not be joining his crew-mates as they lobby for the film.

Carrey is a striden campaigner for stricter gun control in the USA and in the wake of the tragic school shootings at Sandy Hook, he has decided not to support the film, announcing his decision on Twitter. On Sunday (June 23) he posted on to his feed; “I did "Kickass" a month b4 Sandy Hook and now in all good conscience I cannot support that level of violence," adding in another Tweet, "my apologies to others involved with the film. I am not ashamed of it but recent events have caused a change in my heart.”

A noble move yes, but Carrey may have accidentally shot himself in the foot because now people are demanding that the star put his money where his mouth is and if he really is as opposed to the movie he says he is, then why not give away the fee he received. Others saw it as a direct attack on the film and should box office takings and intrest in the movie begin to fall, the blame will no doubt be placed squarely on Carrey. Others meanwhile just didn't understand Carrey's logic, including Mark Millar - the writer of the Kick-Ass graphic novel, and how he managed to blur the lines between fiction and reality, as well as questioning why he chose to single out one occurrence as his reason behind denouncing the film.

Jim Carrey's Kick Ass Views - Should He Donate His Wages?

Jim Carrey

For some, Jim Carrey’s new stance on Kick Ass 2 – that he can’t condone the violence so prevailent in the film – is a welcome addition to the fight for gun regulation in the U.S. For others, it’s hypocritical, and for some, it couldn’t be more irrelevant.

For all three though, Carrey’s reluctance and refusal to support his new film means he should forfeit his fee for the film and donate it to charity – possibly the cause against guns in America, or giving it to the vicitms and families of Sandy Hook – the massacre that inspired his anti-violence position.

The Dumb and Dumber star revealed his thoughts on the film on Twitter. He wrote: "I did Kickass a month b4 Sandy Hook and now in all good conscience I cannot support that level of violence. My apologies to e (sic)," adding: "I meant to say my apologies to others involve with the film. I am not ashamed of it but recent events have caused a change in my heart."

Jim Carrey In Kick Ass 2 U-Turn - Actor Says He "Cannot Support That Level Of Violence"

Jim Carrey

Jim Carrey, who was a surprise addition to the cast when a sequel to the popular Kick-Ass franchise was announced, has denounced the level of violence in the wake of the events at Sandy Hook in December last year. Colonel Stars – Carey’s character in the film – actually refuses to fire guns, choosing instead to take down his enemies as a masked vigilante with melee weapons, but that doesn’t mean gunplay isn’t involved.

The original Kick-Ass movie, while garnering critical acclaim, was condemned for its level of violence, and that doesn’t seem to have subsided the second time around. “I did Kickass (sic) a month b4 Sandy Hook and now in all good conscience I cannot support that level of violence,” Carrey tweeted to over 10 million followers. “…My apologies to others involve[d] with the film. I am not ashamed of it but recent events have caused a change in my heart.”

A keen advocate of gun control, Carrey was recently mocked by the American media for a spoof video mocking U.S gun law – he will now refuse to perform his promotional duties for the film, which includes interviews, premiere appearances and the like.

Kick-Ass 2 Executive Producer Argues Against Jim Carrey's Condemnation Of The Film's Violence

Jim Carrey

Recently, Jim Carey went on record to condemn the movie Kick-Ass 2, due out later this year, for its use of violence. Carey, who stars in the movie himself, tweeted about his change of heart. “I did Kickass a month b4 Sandy Hook and now in all good conscience I cannot support that level of violence,” the 51-year-old actor tweeted. “I meant to say my apologies to others involve[d] with the film. I am not ashamed of it but recent events have caused a change in my heart.” Carey, like a number of stars, has spoken about gun violence and voiced his support for tighter gun control laws in the US, following the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in December of last year.

In response to Carey’s tweet, Kick-Ass and Kick-Ass 2 executive producer Mark Miller wrote a blog post, in which he didn’t fail to mention his respect and love for the actor, but also disagreed with Carey’s position: “[I'm] baffled by this sudden announcement as nothing seen in this picture wasn’t in the screenplay eighteen months ago. Yes, the body-count is very high, but a movie called Kick-Ass 2 really has to do what it says on the tin. A sequel to the picture that gave us HIT-GIRL was always going to have some blood on the floor and this should have been no shock to a guy who enjoyed the first movie so much… This is fiction and like Tarantino and Peckinpah, Scorcese [sic] and Eastwood, John Boorman, Oliver Stone and Chan-Wook Park, Kick-Ass avoids the usual bloodless body-count of most big summer pictures and focuses instead of the CONSEQUENCES of violence… Our job as storytellers is to entertain and our toolbox can’t be sabotaged by curtailing the use of guns in an action-movie.”

Jim Carrey Responds To Critics Of Gun Video With Angry Tweet

Jim Carrey

Jim Carrey ruffled more than a few feathers when he ventured into the always touchy subject of gun control with his Funny or Die music video for the comedy single 'Cold Dead Hand.' Needless to say, almost as soon as the video went viral, a torrent of abuse spewed forth Carrey's way from pro-gun enthusiasts. But Carrey is not the kind of guy to take things lying down and he has already responded to his critics via the medium of Twitter to further back his claims for tighter gun restrictions.

The video in question features Carrey as famed NRA lobbyist Charlton Heston and a host of other humouros characters and the band Eels as special-guests on a country and western TV show, with the band dressed as John Lennon, Gandhi and Abraham Lincoln, making various quips about fire arm enthusiasts, including the old one about gun nuts over compensating for something a little small. As is Newton's Law, for every action there is, of course, a reaction, and the Right responded to the video in their numbers, with a petition to have Carrey deported back to his native Canada being set up soon after the video made the rounds, as well as more than a few nasty words being sent his direction.

Jim's song is entitled Cold Dead Hand, referring to aspeech made by Charlton Heston at an NRA in 2000, in which he states he would never give up his rifles and he would only relinquish his gun if it was removed 'from my cold dead hands'. The lyrics include: "(The angels) wouldn't take him up to heaven like he planned because they couldn't pry that gun from his cold dead hand. "You're a big big man with a little bitty gland, so you need something bigger with a hairpin trigger.” The funny man later tweeted to explain what the video was about, in case any one didn’t quite appreciate the thrust. “Cold Dead Hand' is abt u heartless m************ unwilling 2 bend 4 the safety of our kids. Sorry if you're offended by the word safety! ;^}"

The Croods

This week's big global release is the DreamWorks animated prehistoric comedy-adventure The Croods, led by an all-star vocal cast including Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone and Ryan Reynolds. Look for a huge push for must-have spin-off merchandise for this one, as it's packed with cuddly creatures. And hope it does well at the box office, because it would make a great franchise too.

Doing the publicity rounds this week, Gerard Butler has been out promoting his new White House thriller Olympus Has Fallen. Flitting between New York and Los Angeles to appear on every chat show possible, it's no wonder that he was somewhat fed-up by the time he reached David Letterman's Manhattan studio. Of course, the paparazzi caught it on camera as he lost his patience with a fan trying to get multiple autographs. But he manages to recovers his usual charm.

The trailer for 'Kick Ass 2' is finally here showcasing yet more hilarious superhero capers from Mark Millar and John Romita, Jr.'s lovable comic duo Kick-Ass and Hit-Girl.

The first taste of the multiple award winning superhero comedy movie sequel has arrived with the exciting red band trailer. It opens with Chloe Grace Moretz displaying her usual feisty Hit-Girl attitude as she and Aaron Johnson's Kick-Ass show that they've done some serious training since the original movie in 2010. We also see the return of Christopher Mintz-Plasse, whose formidable Red Mist character has morphed into the supervillain The Motherf***** with revenge on his mind as goes about building a destructive army to avenge his father against Kick-Ass' new superhero team headed by the militant Colonel Stars and Stripes, unrecognisably played by Jim Carrey, and his masked pooch (no joke!).

However, his escapades fighting and killing crime boss Frank D'Amico has inspired a generation of masked crime-fighters to band together as an alliance led by Colonel Stars and Stripes to protect the streets of New York. Kick-Ass and Hit-Girl decide to don their costumes again when news of Red Mist, D'Amico's son who is now known as supervillain The Motherf*****, assembling an army to destroy them reaches them. Burt Wonderstone

The big global release this week is the comedy pastiche The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, starring Steve Carell, Steve Buscemi, Jim Carrey and Alan Arkin as Las Vegas musicians in a battle between old-school illusions and street-magic stunts. Warm and funny, it's also just as silly as you think it'll be.

In between performances as Macbeth on London's West End stage, James McAvoy has been out promoting his new film Welcome to the Punch, an unusually glossy cop thriller set in East London. The film opens this weekend in the UK. Speaking to Contactmusic, he talks about how making action movies is a breeze, and why he prefers to work in Britain if he has the chance. Until a new X-men movie comes up, that is.

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone Review

Very Good

While not the laugh riot it could have been, this comedy consistently amuses us with its pastiche characters and silly gags. It threatens to get bogged down in sentiment at a few points along the way, but manages to veer back into something witty just in time. And while none of the characters are quite as classic as Anchorman's Ron Burgundy, it's an entertaining addition to the affectionate-spoof genre, which includes Blades of Glory and Talladega Nights.

The events take place in the sequin-filled world of Las Vegas magicians, where childhood pals Burt and Anton (Carell and Buscemi) have packed out their theatre for 10 years. But their new assistant Jane (Wilde) is surprised to see that it's now performance by numbers for them, and they can barely stand the sight of each other. Meanwhile, the egomaniac Burt won't consider freshening the act even when faced with competition from attention-seeking street magician Steve (Carrey), who's stealing their audience. But the hotel owner (Gandolfini) urges them to try a big stunt themselves. Or maybe they should return to their roots with their old-school mentor Rance (Arkin).

Carell creates a remarkably believable idiot in Burt Wonderstone, an arrogant womaniser who clearly needs to be brought down a peg or two. What's impressive is how likeable he is, even opposite Buscemi's more sympathetic (but less interesting) Anton. Arkin delivers his usual dryly hilarious supporting turn, while Wilde and Gandolfini do little more than play gently with their usual images. By contrast, Carrey's performance is much more broadly comical. He's funny but far too clownish to ever be taken as a serious threat.

Kick Ass 2 Trailer - More Ridiculous Than The First, Somehow

Jim Carrey

The first Kick Ass film managed to bridge the gap between satire and homage with a microscopic degree of accuracy. Real comic book aficionados loved the references to their heroes, and the blatant caricature of films like Watchmen, while the casual filmgoer enjoyed the expertly choreographed action sequences, and the equally well-constructed plot.

But as the story goes with most successful debuts, the sequels can often represent dangerous ground. If the trailer for Kick Ass 2 is anything to go by, we’re looking at a strong comeback. Kick Ass himself, and Hit Girl are accompanied by a few other superheroes to fight Red Mist - reborn as ‘The Mother F%&*^r’.

The Amazing World Of The Real Burt Wonderstones - Incredible Close Up Magic

Steve Carell Steve Buscemi Jim Carrey Dynamo David Blaine Criss Angel Paul Daniels Penn & Teller Matthew Wright

Magic tricks are a touchy subject among most grown adults nowadays, with it being literally one of those things where you either love it or you absolutely despise it. But there have been a few street magicians who've really transferred it into youth culture; the likes of West Yorkshire's Steven Frayne, more commonly known as Dynamo, being one obvious example as well as A&E Network star Criss Angel who's known for his cool, rocker style and his superhuman mind-reading skills.

We also thought, what with the release of Steve Carell's new comedy 'The Incredible Burt Wonderstone', also starring Steve Buscemi and Jim Carrey, it might be a good idea to put together our favourite close-up magic tricks to whet your appetite for its UK cinematic release, ranging from the old classics to the hip street stuff that has quickly risen in popularity. Of course, these ten magic mavens put Wonderstone to shame with some of the sleekest sleight-of-hand tricks on record.

Incredible Burt Wonderstone Premiered At The Opening Of SXSW This Week

Jim Carrey Steve Carell Olivia Wilde James Gandolfini

One good thing to come out of SXSW this year (well, depending who you ask, of course), was The Incredible Burt Wonderstone. The Don Scardino-directed flick tells the story of a couple of childhood friends, whose friendship grows based on their shared love of magic, until they eventually grow up to become a world-famous magician duo. If that synopsis isn’t enough, the cast of Burt Wonderstone should certainly impress you – starring Steve Carell and Jim Carrey, the film also features names like Olivia Wilde, Steve Buscemi and James Gandolfini.

Burt Wonderstone premiered to a discerning crowd at the opening day of South By South West and the cast used the huge music, film and technology forum to have some fun. Jim Carrey decided to show up to the premiere in a red jacket and silver shoes in the style of his character. In light of the movie’s release, Carrey also commented on the strange relationship he’s had with magic: "I've always had this weird relationship with magic. I think it's fascinating and yet it annoys me because I can't figure it out." Well, let’s hope he can at least fake it convincingly.

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone hits theatres on March 15. In the mean time, you can catch the film trailer below.

We've all had that moment; looking at photos of our favourite celebs and then jumping out of our seats screaming, 'He's HOW old?!' Well, we've been doing a lot of that here at ContactMusic. Some stars seem to have crept up the age ladder pretty sneakily, the odd wrinkle and grey hair barely registering on our radar, while others don't seem to have aged at all! English football player David Beckham was in his twenties when he rose to global popularity and, looking at his recent H&M underwear advert, it seems that his iconic hairstyles and tattoos are our only way of working out the old from the newer pictures of him. However, he is only 37 and has plenty of time to catch up yet. It's the over-50s that have really had our mouths agape in recent times as we've been scouring the net for the most youthful looking middle to old aged stars.

PGA's And SAG Awards Both Favour Affleck While Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens And Ashley Benson Spring Break And Lindsay Lohan's The Canyons Bombs Out

The Oscar race was thrown into a spin last weekend by two guilds, professional groups that make movies and vote for the Academy Awards. First, the Producers Guild of America (PGA) gave its Best Picture award to Ben Affleck's Argo, a surprise because Affleck isn't even nominated for a directing Oscar. Then the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) named Argo for Best Ensemble, which is considered their Best Picture prize. Films only rarely win the Best Picture Oscar if their director isn't nominated. But Affleck is nominated for a Directors Guild of America (DGA) award on Saturday, which will no doubt further muddy the waters leading to Bafta night February 10th and the Oscars two weeks later.

Meanwhile, Oscar contenders dominate the box office, with Les Miserables, Django Unchained and Zero Dark Thirty in the Top 10 both in America and Britain. In addition, Life of Pi and Lincoln are in the UK chart, while Silver Linings Playbook is holding firm in the US. These are the most money-making Best Picture nominees in years.

Childhood Friends Locked In Game Of 'Tag' For 23 Years

Jim Carrey Jeff Daniels

Ten friends originally from Washington have been locked in the same game of 'tag' for the past 23-years. Brian Dennehy and his pals spoke to the Wall Street Journal about their relentless game, which began on the campus of Gonzaga Preparatory School in Spokane, Washington.

Earlier this month, Dennehy began his new job as chief marketing officer for Nordstrom Inc - the upscale fashion retailer. Though he has no particular interest in corporate security, the first question he asked colleagues was "How hard it is for a nonemployee to enter the building?" Why? Because he feared his friends would catch him off-guard and make him 'it'. The men in their 40s moved apart to new cities, had families and made new friends, but they're willing to travel huge distances to carry on the game. Players have been tagged at work and in bed - they form alliances and fly around the countries, enlisting their wives as spies and assistants. "You're like a deer or elk in hunting season," says Joe Tombari, a high-school teacher in Spokane.

One February day in the mid-1990s, Mr Tombari and his wife got a knock on the door from a friend. "Hey, Joe, you've got to check this out. You wouldn't believe what I just bought," he said, as he led the pair out to his car. 'Tag' player Sean Raftis was hidden in the trunk of a Honda Accord, having flown in from Seattle. When the trunk was opened, he leapt out and tagged Mr Tombari, whose wife was so shell-shocked she tore a ligament.

Steve Carell And Jim Carrey Star In The Incredible Burt Wonderstone (Trailer)

Jim Carrey Steve Carell

Steve Carell and Jim Carrey star in The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, a comedy about a magician desperate to increase his public profile (and ticket sales) in an ever-changing world and resorting to a few stunts that might just look a little familiar, if you’re at all familiar with the work of David Blaine. A guerrilla street magician starts to steal Burt’s thunder and he turns to his childhood idol, to remind himself of why he loved magic so much in the first place.

The trailer traces Carell and Buscemi from their childhood beginnings in the world of magic, through their ailing career. Along comes a bleach-blonde Jim Carrey, who performs ‘magic’ of a different kind… such as holding his urine for 12 days. Wonderstone knows that he’s going to have to up his game to keep up but the best he comes up with in this sneak preview is holding his poop in.

Steve Carrell, Jim Carrey And Alan Arkin's New Trailer For The Incredible Burt Wonderstone

Steve Carell Jim Carrey Alan Arkin Olivia Wilde James Gandolfini

Steve Carell is probably still funny to 14 year olds, and that's great. He's still got a market and he's still making plenty of movies, and plenty of money from them, so good on him. Once again however, his latest role looks abysmal. He's playing the eponymous magician of The Incredible Burt Wonderstone.

Having been enamoured as a child by television magicians he, along with his best friend Anton Marvelton (Steve Buscemi), makes it his career. Making it to be Las Vegas stars, eventually their act slowly goes down the pan, facing fierce competition from a long haired, dip-dyed street magician named Steve Gray, played by Jim Carrey (recently said to be the planet's funniest person by Judd Appatow). As the latest trailer shows, their gradually competing acts are something of a parody of the likes of David Blaine. However, Burt Wonderstone manages to enlist the help of the man that inspired him in the first place: Rance Holloway, played by the brilliant Alan Arkin

Despite having an impressive cast (Olivia Wilde and James Gandolfini also appear), from initial views of the trailer, it looks pretty terrible. We might be eating our words come March 15, 2013, and we'll happily do so, but it looks unlikely. Take a look at the trailer to decide for yourself:

Jim Carrey Is Judd Apatow's Funniest Man On Earth

Jim Carrey Judd Apatow Chloe Moretz

The name 'Judd Appatow' probably rings a bell, but without clear recognition of who he is. We guarrantee that he's partly responsible for one of your favourite contemporary comedy movies, having been involved as either a director, writer or producer for The Cable Guy, Anchor Man, Knocked Up, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Superbad, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Pineapple Express, Don't Mess With the Zohan and Bridesmaids. To name but a few. It's safe to say, this man knows comedy. Which is why it is actually news worthy for him to say that Jim Carrey is the funniest man on the earth, because it kind of means that we have to consider whether Jim Carrey might actually be the funniest man on earth...

For the latest edition of Vanity Fair, Appatow teamed up with the editorial team for their special comedy issue and wrote: "When I was a stand-up comedian in the late 80s, I used to open for Jim Carrey on the road. I would do my lame act and then he would come on and do the most energetic, inventive, uproarious set I had ever witnessed. I retired from performing as a result. He was and is the funniest man on earth. This is something we can all agree on. We can debate number two forever but Jim will always be the king."

High praise indeed! And he certainly sounds convincing, but to be honest, we don't actually agree with him. While Appatow is currently working on the Anchor Man sequel and something called 'Can a Song Save Your Life?', Carrey has been working hard on the set for another sequel- Kick Ass 2. As Yahoo reported, he took the cast of the film on a private boat tour of the Thames in England, giving them a hilarious fictional history of England as they travelled- apparently it kept Chloe Moretz, Nicolas Cage and Aaron Taylor-Johnson in stitches.

A Christmas Carol Review

Excellent
The quintessential Christmas classic gets yet another movie incarnation with this visually impressive version from effects wizard Zemeckis. For most of us, all the surprises here are visual, and it's well worth seeing in 3D.

For seven years after his business partner Marley dies, Ebenezer Scrooge (Carrey) ruthlessly pinches his pennies, underpaying his assistant Bob Cratchit (Oldman) and neglecting the family of his nephew Fred (Firth). Then on Christmas Eve, Marley's ghost informs Scrooge that he will be visited by three ghosts, and that night Scrooge takes a terrifying odyssey through his past, present and future, realising that he has completely missed the point of his life. And of Christmas.

Lemony Snicket's A Series Of Unfortunate Events Review

Good
This film lives up entirely to its title. The events are as follows: Death of parents by fire, three siblings turned into victims of their closest relative, deception, escapes, disguises, greed, murder attempted and accomplished, evil genius, egomania, abduction, forced marriage, and more wickedness than we might want to witness.

It also has the genius of a multi-disguised Jim Carrey, the narrative voice (and silhouetted presence) of a finely articulated Jude Law, and a basis in a best-selling series of books, 18 million copies of which have been sold since 1999. The movie has seamless effects, inspired inventiveness, and a serious dramatic "problem." More on that below.

Carry On Joke Tops One-liner Poll

Monty Python Cameron Diaz Jim Carrey Pink Priscilla Presley Woody Allen

Kenneth Williams' famous quip "Infamy! Infamy! They've all got in for me!" has been named as the funniest line in movie history.

He uttered the words as Julius Caesar in the 1964 film Carry On Cleo.

Coming second in the poll for Sky Movies Comedy, which quizzed 1,000 film fans and critics, is the line "He's not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy" from the Monty Python film The Life of Brian.

And apparently the third funniest words uttered in a film are the exchange between Robert Hays (Ted Striker) and Leslie Nielsen (Dr Rumack) in the 1980 hit Airplane! After Hays said "Surely you can't be serious" Nielsen quipped back "I am seriousand don't call me Shirley".

Other films with one-liners making it into the poll's top ten are lines from the slapstick comedy films Dumb and Dumber, There's Something About Mary and The Naked Gun.

Top ten comedy lines

1) "Infamy! Infamy! They've all got it in for me!" Kenneth Williams as Julius Caesar Carry on Cleo (1964)

3) "I am serious, and don't call me Shirley." Leslie Nielsen as Dr Rumack - Airplane! (1980)

4) "Remember you're fighting for this woman's honour, which is probably more than she ever did." Groucho Marx as Rufus T Firefly - Duck Soup (1933)

Doing Time On Maple Drive Review

OK
Doing Time on Maple Drive was originally made as a Fox TV movie of the week, but you'll swear it was produced by Lifetime. Talk about a dysfunctional family! There's enough soap here to fill a Palmolive factory.

Mix one part Ordinary People and one part The Great Santini, water it down with TV production values, add a dash of gay-teen after-school special, and you've got the Maple Drive formula. Dated even when it came out, the film's only worthwhile contribution to cinematic history is its casting of a young Jim Carrey in one of his only truly dramatic roles (and by the way, he's actually not bad).

Me, Myself & Irene Review

Weak

If only Jim Carrey's uninhibited and completely unhinged, sweet-and-sour insanity was by itself enough to carry a movie, it might not matter so much that the plot of the Farrelly Brothers' "Me, Myself and Irene" is nothing but an undercooked on-the-run road movie.

Full of crooked cops and rich, double-crossing ex-boyfriends, it's a dim bulb script the boys had shelved ages ago and dusted off last year only after a couple post-"There's Something About Mary" projects fell through.

Sustained only by its outrageousness (breast milk gags, anyone?) and Carrey's hammy physical humor, the movie does have its fair share of laughs. But between guffaws there's nothing to keep the uneven "Irene" from collapsing under its own dead weight.

Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind Review

Very Good

Having dabbled in John Malkovich's mind in "Being John Malkovich," then delved into his own neurotic noggin in "Adaptation," ingeniously idiosyncratic screenwriter Charlie Kaufman wraps his head around themes of lucid-dreaming and lost love in "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," and once again hits the Freudian jackpot.

A melancholy metaphysical romance about how human beings are the sum of their experiences, this distinctively surreal, meditative fable takes place largely inside the rapidly dissolving memories of a dejected sad sack named Joel Barish (Jim Carrey), who hopes to end a crippling case of heartbreak by having his ex-girlfriend (Kate Winslet) electronically expunged from his cerebellum in a makeshift CAT-scan procedure performed by a dubious back-alley doctor (Tom Wilkinson) and his nerdy house-call technicians.

To augment the film's sublimely disorienting narrative -- parts of which run backwards as Joel's discordant recent memories are boiled away before his more melodious earlier ones -- director Michel Gondry opens with an unsteady shot of Joel wobbling out of his unfolded sofa-bed on Valentine's Day 2004, the morning after his selective lobotomy.

Man On The Moon Review

Good

Seeing the biopic "Man On the Moon" is like being at a seance in a comedy club.

Director Milos Forman and star Jim Carrey conjure up the spirit of their subject -- Andy Kaufman, that most eccentric of professional oddballs, that patron saint of the practical joke -- with such effective Ouija-dom that at times is as if his ghost has taken over the film.

All the buzz you've probably heard about Carrey's performance is true. A Kaufman aficionado from way back, he does more than just mimic Andy's mannerisms and repeat his routines -- it's like Kaufman has slipped inside Carrey's skin (shall I compare thee to "Being John Malkovich"?) and won a battle for control of his body. There's still a wee bit of Carrey peeking out, but that sliver his own style serves to create a fascinating Kaufman-Carrey alloy.
