"Dumb And Dumber To" Is Just A Bit Too Dumb, Say Critics

Jim Carrey Jeff Daniels

You knew it was coming, I knew it was coming, but we were NOT prepared. Dumb and Dumber To is in cinemas this weekend. Naturally, the first instinct of most critics was to RIP IT TO SHREDS. With just 27% approval on Rotten Tomatoes, the question of the day seems to be: “Why, Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels, WHY?”

Jim Carrey, Jeff Daniels
It's just not the same, guys.

So what exactly is wrong with it? To quote Rolling Stone’s  Peter Travers, “Time can be cruel, especially to sequels.” According to Travers – as well as a host of other reviewers, gags have an expiration date and the ones in D&D are way past theirs. But it’s not like the sequel is completely irredeemable – it just falls far short of the original. “. This isn’t some cynical piece of garbage like Another 48 Hrs. Carrey and Daniels are in there working hard and almost getting their tricky rhythms back. On paper, the premise sounds more than serviceable,” David Edelstein writes for Vulture.

'Dumb & Dumber To' Is Terrible. There. We Said It. Everyone Said It.

Jim Carrey Jeff Daniels

We get the feeling this Dumb & Dumber sequel could have been a lot cleverer - a lot slicker than this. The return of Harry and Lloyd probably represents a considerable payday for Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels, though the classic original has a legion of quote-loving fans and you can't help but think they deserved a little more.

Dumb & Dumber: How Jim Carrey's Salary Went From $350k To $7 Million

Jim Carrey Jeff Daniels

Dumb & Dumber To is almost ready for release and although the comedy sequel probably isn't going to live up to expectations (if there were any), at least we've got the Farrelly brothers' promotional jaunt to keep us entertained. The directors were speaking to students at Loyola Marymount University's School of Film and Television this week and recounted numerous stories about production on the classic 1995 movie, including Jim Carrey's inflated salary.

Dumb & Dumber ToJim Carrey [L] and Jeff Daniels [R] shooting Dumb & Dumber To

Peter recalled how Steve Stabler - producer on Dumb & Dumber - offered Jim Carrey $350k to do the original film, which he passed on. Carrey - who was also working on The Mask and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective wanted $400,000 and the studio executives were holding off. A couple of months later, Ace Ventura hit the big-screen and made $107 million on a budget of just fifteen.

Jim Carrey's third appearance on 'Saturday Night Live' at the weekend (October 25th 2014) proved to be another eye-wateringly hilarious episode - though we know we'll be stuck with an image of the actor in a nude unitard and blonde wig forever more.

Yes, Saturday's 'SNL' highlight was the Halloween themed office party sketch, which saw the 'Dumb and Dumber' star re-enact the video for Sia's Platinum hit 'Chandelier', alongside identically dressed cast member Kate Mckinnon as they attempted to battle it out for the right to wear the costume. The pair performed the energetic dance routine of 'Dance Moms' star Maddie Ziegler who starred in the video, and while it has to be said that it really is a remarkable rendition, Jim Carrey's customary absurd facial expressions made it a truly unmissable show - that and musical guest Iggy Azalea's unexpected cameo.

Dumb And Dumber To Trailer

After getting held hostage and nearly killed in 'Dumb and Dumber', the only trauma Lloyd Christmas appears to be feeling is from the rejection of a beautiful woman. Or not, as the case may be. After a 20-year long prank on Lloyd's part, he and Harry Dunne are back in action and return to their home in Rhode Island. Soon, though, Harry gets the shock of his life when he finds out that he has a 23-year-old daughter after finally opening his mail and the pair excitedly decide to track her down. However, it seems the mother gave her up for adoption a long time ago so their search becomes more difficult than they imagined. Lloyd will do anything to help Harry find her though, after falling in love once again when he claps eyes on her photo. The question is, does she really want to be found? And, if she does, how does she feel about having a father who barely knows how to take care of himself?

‘Dumb And Dumber To’ Trailer Is Seriously Low On Seabass

Jim Carrey Jeff Daniels

Ok, we all watched and, for the most part, enjoyed the Dumb & Dumber To trailer this week. It looks as though Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are harking back to the original for plenty of nostalgic references, which is fair enough, but there was one element of the classic 1994 movie that got no mention.

Jim CarreyJim Carrey stars in Dumb & Dumber To

Tom Neely’s Seabass character was one of the highlights of the original and we were delighted when we saw the hockey star’s name on the IMDB’s credits list for the sequel. However, Neely was nowhere to be seen in the trailer – which left us wondering.

It’s been 20 years since we last saw Harry and Lloyd, but cinema’s two most loveable idiots are back this November for their long awaited sequel, Dumb and Dumber To. Dumb And Dumber To Trailer: You Might Want To Hold Off On Lunch

Jim Carrey Jeff Daniels Peter Farrelly

The absurd Dumb and Dumber To trailer hit on Tuesday evening (June 10, 2014), delighting fans of the original comedy classic with a  new level of slapstick - a new level of awful. In a good way. As the camera loops in over the metal institution in which Jim Carrey's character Lloyd Christmas is holed up - everything has that lovely 90's warmth about it.

Dumb and Dumber To Jim CarreyThe Dumb and Dumber To Trailer Hit On Tuesday

Sure, there's a degree of nostalgia here. Plenty of nostalgia in fact. Lloyd and his partner in crime Harry (Jeff Daniels) reference numerous lines from the original movie and there's a couple of gross out moments that wouldn't have been out of place in the instantly forgettable spin-off Dumb & Dumberer, however, this first trailer suggests Carrey and Daniels are onto another good thing.

Jim Carrey Offers Words Of Wisdom With Inspirational Graduation Speech

Jim Carrey

Graduates of the Maharishi University Of Management got a special treat last weekend when they not only witnessed Jim Carrey receive his honorary doctorate, they also got to hear him make an emotional and inspirational speech. Taking to the podium, Carrey delivered his many words of wisdom with a smile, offering some sincere and heartfelt to anyone with a dream to follow and making sure every graduate left feeling a little less fearful of the future.

Jim CarreyJim Carey received an honorary doctorate from the Iowa university

Carrey’s speech was of course packed with as many laughs as you’d expect from the rubber faced comedian, but what was more memorable was the advice he gave to the young graduates. Drawing from his own personal experiences and that of his father, Carey encouraged all of us to follow our dreams and not be afraid to ask the universe for big things.

'The Truman Show' Is Coming To Television, But Will It Find An Audience?

Jim Carrey

The Truman Show is joining the ever growing list of movies which are being resurrected for the small screen. Paramount has just announced it’s developing the 1998 movie into a television series soon, i.e. a scripted series not a reality show based on the movie. Although robbed of an Oscar, the film has remained a much loved and still critically acclaimed piece of late 90s cinema, but will it be able to find an audience on the small screen in the 21st century?

The Truman ShowThe Truman Show is coming to television

The Truman Show is one of those films which has since been called ‘eerily prophetic’. Indeed the 1998 movie seemed to unwittingly predict our current celebrity culture and television viewing. In the film Jim Carey starred as Truman Burbank, who was unknowingly the star of his own reality television programme, The Truman Show. Truman had been taken from birth to be the focus of the 24 hours a day 7 days a week reality show which was watched by the entire world. But as Truman grows older he started to realise that certain aspects of his life were a little strange and repetitive, leading him to question his ‘reality’.

Paramount Developing 'The Truman Show' For TV Adaptation

Jim Carrey Laura Linney Peter Weir

For a film that depicted one man’s journey as he unwittingly became a staple diet of American’s TV-watching public, it’s perhaps fitting that The Truman Show should be adapted for the small screen by Paramount.

The studio, as Paramount exec Amy Powell told The Wrap, will be looking to use a host of content to make the series happen. Including The Truman Show itself, their owned novels, screenplays and non-fiction that could all contribute to the development of a small screen adaptation.

Dumb And Dumber To: Everything You Need To Know

Jim Carrey Jeff Daniels

It’s been twenty years since the first ‘Dumb and Dumber’ movie and later this year we’re set to join the dimwitted duo in the long-awaited sequel. With a release set for November, let’s bring you up to speed on ‘Dumb and Dumber To’.

Dumb and Dumber To
Dumb and Dumber To - here's an example of the laughs...

Twenty years is a very long time in-between movies and for a while it really seemed as though we would never see Harry and Lloyd’s on-screen reunion. The sequel was first hinted at by the Farley brothers in 2012 and things seemed to be moving forward until the project hit a speed bump in the summer. The original cast seemed to be on board and suddenly the studio, Warner Bros., didn't seem interested in reviving the characters again, causing Jim Carrey to drop out of the project.

Did Andy Kaufman's Brother Hire Actress To Play Death Hoax 'Daughter'?

Jim Carrey

The woman who appeared on stage and claimed to be the daughter of late comedian Andy Kaufman was part of a hoax, according to reports on a US website. Kaufman's brother Michael has been implicated in the elaborate hoax, but denies he had any part in hiring the actress.

Alexandra Tatarsky appeared at the 9th Annual Andy Kaufman awards at the Gothan Comedy Club in New York on Monday evening (11th November). She claimed, standing alongside Kaufman's brother Michael, that Kaufman's death in 1984 was a hoax and that the comedian had merely retired to be "a stay-at-home dad."

TMZ obtained video footage of the announcement in which Tatarsky awkwardly discussed her home life. She claimed her 'father' was touched by the awards and watched them on YouTube every year. Tatarsky continued by saying her 'father' had planned on attending the awards ceremony as he wasn't sure how long he could continue hiding "this part of himself."

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues - International Trailer

The news used to be a noble profession before the likes of Ron Burgundy with his set of San Diego anchors Brian Fantana, Brick Tamland and Champ Kind took over. Now it's all about scandal, debauchery and vulgarity and Burgundy and his team are fighting hard to keep it that way. As per usual, they manage to get themselves in all kinds of trouble involving drugs in the studio, completely inappropriate news headlines, accidental racism (not to mention homophobia) and, of course, getting laid, and it's all in a bid to remain on top of the media as Ron fights his own battle to professionally tower over his wife and rival Veronica.

'Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues' is the even more hilarious sequel to 2004's 'Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy'. There's definitely more laughs to be had from everyone's favourite news readers as Judd Apatow ('The 40 Year Old Virgin', 'Knocked Up', 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall') returns to produce it. Director Adam McKay ('Step Brothers', 'The Other Guys', 'Talladega Nights') is also back alongside his co-writer and star Will Ferrell. It is set to feature in cinemas just in time for Christmas, premiering in theatres everywhere on December 20th 2013.

Jim Carrey Shows Off His Chipped Tooth To Promote 'Dumb And Dumber' Sequel

Jim Carrey

Jim Carrey let his inner "'Lloyd' hang out", by choosing to not cover up his famously chipped tooth in public.  The dental deficiency gained attention almost 20 years ago, when Carey used it to show off the lovable but stupid nature of his character, Lloyd Christmas, in the cult comedy 'Dumb and Dumber'. With a sequel on the horizon, the film funny-man has decided to show off the tooth, to lighten to moods of his fans.

I have a bonding on it most of the time and now I don't. But I've decided to just live with it - it's fun. Because wherever I go, people laugh in my face and ask me to open beers for them and stuff. It's really kind of a blast."

Kick-Ass 2 Review

Good

New writer-director Wadlow (Never Back Down) makes one severe misstep with this sequel to Matthew Vaughn's snappy 2010 Kick-Ass: he loses the irony. Now everything is played for goofy laughs and indulgent grisliness. There's no longer any subtext, nothing original in the structure or premise and a clear fear of being politically incorrect. Even so, it's an entertaining romp with a steady stream of funny gags.

After the craziness of the first film, Dave (Taylor-Johnson) has hung up his Kick-Ass costume and is trying to be a regular teen at school, but he's jealous of Mindy (Moretz) secretly carrying on her training as Hit Girl. So he asks her to team up and teach him some new tricks. But when her guardian (Chestnut) finds out, she promises to give up the violence and go back to school. Now Dave has to find a new partner, so he joins a lively team of underground heroes led by the gung-ho Captain Stars and Stripes (Carrey). But Dave's old nemesis Chris (Mintz-Plasse) still wants to avenge his father's death, so he abandons his dodgy heroic alter-ego Red Mist and instead becomes a supervillain called The Mother F**ker, with his own butler-assistant (Leguizamo) and a crew of minions.

Wadlow briskly leaps from one action set-piece to the next, and each scene has a witty sense of humour about it, even if the extreme violence is played for rather glamorised fun rather than the shock-value of the first film. Through everything, the dialog is packed with amusing lines that keep us laughing. And Mindy's parallel plot has its moments as well, throwing her in with the school's mean girls, who clearly don't know who they're messing with. Moretz plays Mindy so well that she makes everyone else feel scruffy and simplistic by comparison. Carrey's muscled meathead is a startlingly against-type role that strangely refuses to go anywhere. But Glen is rivetingly sharp in one key scene.

Glamorize Violence? Kick Ass 2 "Unglamorizes" It, Actually, Says Mark Miller

Jim Carrey Chloe Moretz

It may not an actual word, but Kick Ass creator Mark Miller is pretty sure that Kick Ass 2 unglamorizes violence, instead of the popular opinion that it in fact glamorizes it. The news comes on the eve of the film’s U.K release, and after Jim Carrey withdrew support for it on Twitter.

Chloe MoretzChloe Moretz stars in Kick Ass 2

"In many films you don't see the grieving or the pain but in Kick-Ass you feel every blow... It's a very real take on violence and it almost unglamourises it," Miller explained to the BBC. "Jim Carrey's character ironically is a born-again Christian who refuses to carry a gun because... he doesn't want to be a negative role model for children."

Could 'Kick Ass 2' Be Even Better Than The First? [Trailer + Pictures]

Chloe Moretz Aaron Johnson Jim Carrey Christopher Mintz-Plasse

Kick Ass was the surprise hit of 2010; the ultra-violent adaption from the comic book by Mark Miller was a cheap, successful movie, and now it’s back with an even bigger roster of stars, and is set to build upon the success of its predecessor.

Chloe MoretzChloe Moretz Kicking Ass

Just in case you didn’t know, the original saw Aaron Johnson (Dave Lizewski) become a vigilante super hero called Kick Ass, fully unaware that Nicolas Cage (Damon MacReady) and Chloe Moretz (Mindy MacReady) were already protecting the city from criminals as Big Daddy and Hit Girl. They join forces to battle the criminal syndicate helmed by Christoper Mintz-Plasse’s father.
