Mickey Prohaska is a small time insurance agent living in Wisconsin. He has grown apart from his wife, Jo Ann and is hoping that his business which he is jump-starting will help patch things up. Unfortunately, things with Jo Ann aren't as good as he makes out to be: she has separated with him. Financially, things are worse: Mickey has a gambling habit and during a recent trip to a casino, he lost his wallet after a one night stand with a prostitute.

But here, the downtrodden vibe has more complexity than Clockwatchers, as does the storyline. Co-written with sister Karen, Sprecher's screenplay follows a series of New York City tales that, aside from their underlying themes, are apparently unconnected... or are they?

The creation instinct tends to be downplayed in relationship to the other two. Perhaps this is because of the fact that the creation instinct has very little impact upon the modern world. It really, unless you happen to be a curious person or a psychoanalyst, doesn't concern you why a writer wants to write, a painter wants to paint, etc. However, even the writers and painters often do not have much of a clue where their ideas come from. However, when one sees a movie like Clockwatchers, the question that hits your mind is "why would anyone wish to do a movie about stealing office supplies?"
