Young Adult Review

Excellent
There isn't much on the surface of this prickly comedy, but the sharp script slices through American culture so astutely that we continually see ourselves in characters who are clearly losers. And the film gives Theron another terrific role to disappear into.

Mavis (Theron) left her small-town home for Minneapolis to become an author of young adult fiction. But as her book series comes to an end, she hears that her high school flame Buddy (Wilson) has just had a baby with his wife Beth (Reaser). So Mavis heads home to try to win him back. Of course, nothing goes as planned, and she ends up instead commiserating with another former classmate, Matt (Oswalt), who also can't seem to move on from his teen years.

Mavis Gary is the ghostwriter for a successful series of young adult novels entitled the Waverly Prep series. Lately, though, the books have been lagging, so the publishers have decided to cancel them. Mavis has almost finished what will be the last book in the series but is struggling with the last chapter. She is also struggling with more personal issues in her life: she has a drinking problem and longs to relive the glory days of high school, where she was a popular cheerleader and dating the resident 'It' boy, Buddy Slade.

Rachel and Darcy have been friends since school, though the girls are very different, it was a case of opposites attract. Rachel being the intelligent, mousy and shy half of the couple and Darcy is the louder and much more extrovert character. Whilst at uni studying law Rachel buckled down with her study but she also met Dex, a charming guy who, since the first time she met him, has has a 'thing' for. Finally just as Rachel thinks she's plucks up the courage to make a move, along comes Darcy and steps in the way of her plans by making a move on him first.

The Manhattan Project Review

Excellent
What kid doesn't want to build a nuclear bomb? This fantastic journey follows a teen (Christopher Collet, long since retired from acting) as he discovers a plutonium skunkworks in his suburban backyard, proceeds to steal some of it, and build his own nuclear weapon to enter into the science fair. It's a wild ride and tons of fun, with comedy, genuine tension, and lots of geeky science fun. Highly underrated... watch especially for Cynthia Nixon as Collet's love interest -- about 15 years before she'd hit it big on Sex and the City, with a far, far worse haircut.

Manna From Heaven Review

Bad
The five precocious Burton sisters of Buffalo, NY have given us a precocious film about a group of people so hateful we are forced to try our best to simply ignore them. How's that for skipping the first day of Filmmaking 101?

Manna From Heaven is the story of a Buffalo family who one day discover $20,000 "raining from heaven," wisely decide to split it up, and then go on their merry ways. A decade or so later, every last one of them has grown up to be a loser, having squandered his or her (mostly her) share of the loot. The lone exception is Theresa (Ursula Burton... well of course the good one is going to be played by a Burton sister!) who has become an ash-on-the-forehead nun. In fact, Theresa becomes convinced that the 20 grand of so long ago was not a gift but a loan, and that they must now "pay it back."

Arthur Review

Very Good
It's the movie we'll forever know Dudley Moore for -- and the late John Gielgud, too, who is put out to pasture about halfway through this classic comedy. "Classic" doesn't necessarily mean "fabulous" in this case, however -- Arthur is little more than a glamorization of an otherwise no-account, good-for-nothing, stinking-rich drunk. Moore is hardly a role model, and his tale of "I love a poor girl" is so sappy one questions how Arthur ever became a hit. Two words: John Gielgud, who shines in what could have been the embarassment of his life. Party on, John.
