Mavis Gary is the ghostwriter for a successful series of young adult novels entitled the Waverly Prep series. Lately, though, the books have been lagging, so the publishers have decided to cancel them. Mavis has almost finished what will be the last book in the series but is struggling with the last chapter. She is also struggling with more personal issues in her life: she has a drinking problem and longs to relive the glory days of high school, where she was a popular cheerleader and dating the resident 'It' boy, Buddy Slade.

Rachel and Darcy have been friends since school, though the girls are very different, it was a case of opposites attract. Rachel being the intelligent, mousy and shy half of the couple and Darcy is the louder and much more extrovert character. Whilst at uni studying law Rachel buckled down with her study but she also met Dex, a charming guy who, since the first time she met him, has has a 'thing' for. Finally just as Rachel thinks she's plucks up the courage to make a move, along comes Darcy and steps in the way of her plans by making a move on him first.
