Actor Jet Li's acclaimed martial arts movie Hero has fought its way to the top of the American box office, with an opening haul of $17.8 million (GBP9.8 million).

ANACONDAS: THE HUNT FOR THE BLOOD ORCHID, a sequel to 1997 movie ANACONDA, opened in second place with $13.2 million (GBP7.3 million).

The weekend's other new movies debuted weakly. Serial killer tale SUSPECT ZERO, starring Aaron Eckhart, Ben Kingsley and Carrie-Anne Moss, came in at number 10 with $3.4 million (GBP1.8 million).

SUPERBABIES: BABY GENIUSES 2, a follow-up to the 1999 kid film, finished at number 11 with $3.3 million (GBP1.8 million).

The previous weekend's (21-22AUG04) top movie, EXORCIST: THE BEGINNING, tumbled to fifth-place with $6.7 million (GBP3.7 million).

Hero was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film ACADEMY AWARD in 2002.
