Best Friends Review

Weak
When Best Friends is less than halfway over, you'll long for a much better '80s rom-com like Seems Like Old Times, also starring Goldie Hawn in one of her endless roles from the era as (basically) herself.

Hawn is partnered rather tragically here with Burt Reynolds. They play the titular best friends -- screenwriters -- who decide to get married, only to realize that romance is far more difficult than friendship. I mean, there's in-laws! An old and groping father is about as funny as Friends ever gets, as the movie's one-liners fall down flat one after another. That's probably because the film is based on the real life of writers Valerie Curtin and Barry Levinson, and frankly not much amusing seems to have happened during their brief marriage.

The Birds Review

Extraordinary
Hitchcock aimed to do for avians in The Birds what he did for showers in Psycho, and by and large he succeeded. The Birds is roughly hewn by comparison to Hitch's more deftly plotted films -- it's much closer to a monster movie than a psychological thriller, moreso than any of his other films. Tippi Hedren makes her screen debut here, and it's a bit of a cold and tricky one, though not a terrible performance. She flubs her lines consistently, though -- including one in her very first scene. The Birds is most notable though for turning something completely harmless into an incredible menace -- all with absolutely no explanation. That's where the terror really comes from in The Birds.

The World According To Garp Review

OK
This film, the second in Williams' career, has an interesting start, tracing the life of a young bastard with a stern nurse for a mother. But when mother becomes a feminist icon and people start getting shot, Garp gets a little preachy -- okay, a lot preachy -- and ultimately loses its charm.

Nobody's Fool Review

Very Good
Paul Newman is back as the title character of Nobody's Fool. Nobody's Fool is a study of small-town life in upstate New York, focused on Newman as the go-between among a dozen or so townsfolk. Superb performances abound, particularly by Jessica Tandy (in her final role) and Bruce Willis, and even Melanie Griffith as Newman's would-be love interest performs with genuine emotion. Newman steals the show, of course, as the flawed Everyman who chooses to just let life happen and not make a big show of it.
