"Sin City" Stars Talk A Big Game Of Female Empowerment, But Will The Movie Deliver?

Jessica Alba Eva Green Rosario Dawson Joseph Gordon-Levitt Josh Brolin Bruce Willis

Sin City: A Dame To Kill For isn’t out until this coming Thursday, August 21, but promotion has been going on for months. Maybe you’ve noticed that this time around, it’s mostly (if not all) focused on the ladies – from Jessica Alba’s no-longer damsel-in-distress Nancy, to Rosario Dawson’s dominatrix with a deadly attitude Gail, to the Dame herself – Eva Green as Ava Lord. These are no-nonsense, cliché-free female characters. Well, technically they’re all cliché, but that’s the point – it’s all very post-modern and ironic and noir-inspired, etc.

Jessica Alba
Yes, ok, the women are still strutting around in their underwear. But this time they are empowered, apparently.

Jessica Alba Doesn’t ‘Need’ To Work – Okay? So Serious Roles Only

Jessica Alba

In a blatent yet accidental admittance that she used to do anything for money, Jessica Alba has stated that she doesn’t really need to work anymore, and in light of that, will only accept really serious roles.

“When you have kids, you kind of think, I don’t need to work just to work. I want to sink my teeth into a character that makes it worth not being with my kids, or not being at the office,” explains Alba. “Having kids, having strong relationships with my husband, my friends, that it is my priority… that’s what really defines me, not a tabloid or a movie opening or a poster or an endorsement.” If no one is willing to take her seriously as an actor, then perhaps people will as an entrepreneur. Last year Jessica launched her own eco-friendly lifestyle company, The Honest Company, and most recently, she launched a new book: The Honest Life. Jessica compares her book to other celebrities authors, telling New York Daily News: “Gwyneth Paltrow probably lives a very similar lifestyle, but I didn't grow up with a bunch of money, so my tips are much more grounded: repurposing things and making things at home.”

Alba and environmental activist, Christopher Gavigan’s company sells affordable and 'unquestionably safe' baby products to help families live in the healthiest environment as possible, until Alba lands a role she thinks is serious enough, that is.

Pitch Perfect Star Rebel Wilson To Host MTV Movie Awards 2013

Rebel Wilson Sarah Silverman Russell Brand Amy Poehler Tina Fey Lindsay Lohan Jessica Alba

Rebel Wilson, the comedy actress currently starring in Pitch Perfect, will host the 2013 MTV Movie Awards, the network announced in a first look trailer on Thursday (December 20, 2012). Set to air on April 14, Wilson will become the first woman to host the event since Sarah Silverman emceed in 2007.

Female comedians are taking over next year's awards' ceremonies, with Amy Poehler and Tina Fey tasked with hosting the Golden Globes. The MTV Awards sometimes get it right with their hosts (Russell Brand, Andy Samberg, Sarah Silverman, Will Smith), though often get it very, very, wrong. Lindsay Lohan hosted in 2004, while Jessica Alba didn't exactly set the show alight in 2006. Anyway, Wilson - as the comedy actress of the moment - seems a pretty solid choice. The Australian played Brynn in the smash-hit Bridesmaids and went on to star in A Few Best Men, What To Expect When You're Expecting, and Pitch Perfect. She's currently writing a comedy named Super Fun for the ABC Network, and stars alongside Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson in the action-comedy Pain & Gain.

The 2012 MTV Movie Awards was held at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Los Angeles in June. It was dominated by The Hunger Games, Twilight and Bridesmaids.

Beyonce And Jay-Z Lose Their Claim On 'Blue Ivy'

Beyonce Knowles Jay Z Jessica Alba

That's right, Beyonce and Jay-Z, contrary to popular belief, are actually capable of failure. We didn't think it possible. If somewhere in the depths of the universe there's an allowance of Luck for Earth, those two are definitely using up a good 40% of the planet's limit- if that were the case we could probably even blame them for the European financial crisis. However, the ultimate power-couple have finally failed at something.

In January of this year, just after the birth of their baby Blue Ivy, Beyonce and Jay-Z filed to copy-write 'Blue Ivy'. Unfortunately for the 'Crazy in Love' couple, Blue Ivy is already in use by an events company of that name. The company was forced to defend their current branding, which they have used since 2009- right about the time baby Blue Ivy became merely a twinkle in the eyes of her parents.

Beyonce had wanted to use the name in the future to begin a line of baby-clothing, reports E! Celebrity baby clothing lines are nothing new and Gwen Stefani and Tori Spelling both have their own range. However, it's Jessica Alba that tops the baby-style list, with her business 'The Honest Company', which provides eco- and child-friendly baby products. On the company's website she said, "I created The Honest Company to help moms and to give all children a better, safer start". As much as setting your child up a business in its infancy is a great start in life, we far favour Jessica Alba's approach, honest.

Spy Kids: All The Time In The World Review

Weak
Rodriguez attempts to reboot his children's adventure series with this raucously colourful fourth film, which uses the 4D gimmick of Aroma-scope. But it feels more like a cheap kids' TV series than an actual movie.

Rebecca and Cecil (Blanchard and Cook) are young teens living with their TV-host dad Wilbur (McHale) and his sexy new wife Marissa (Alba). No one knows that Marissa is actually a super-spy who has retired to give birth to a daughter. But now the world is being threatened by the sinister Timekeeper, and her boss (Piven) asks her to come back to work. When Rebecca and Cecil end up in the middle of things, they discover that they're rather adept at being spy kids, mentored by now-grown siblings Carmen and Juni (Vega and Sabara).

Little Fockers Review

Weak
While this second sequel to Meet the Parents features the same comedy of embarrassment and vulgarity as its predecessors, it also takes a strange sideways step into machismo that leaves it feeling rather joyless.

As their twins (Daisy Tahan and Colin Baiocchi) are about to turn 5, Greg and Pam Focker (Stiller and Polo) are planning a big birthday party involving both of their sets of parents. While Pam's intense dad Jack (De Niro) is pressuring Greg to be a family leader, her mom (Danner) tries to keep the peace.

Meanwhile, Greg's parents (Streisand and Hoffman) are on separate quests of their own. But it's Pam's ex Kevin (Wilson) who really stirs things up. As does a drug rep (Alba) who gets a bit too close to Greg.

Machete Review

Very Good
Essentially part three of the Grindhouse series, this old-style thriller sprang from Rodriguez's fake trailer. In some ways it should have stayed that short, because while it's riotously entertaining, there's nothing much to it.

Machete (Trejo) is a disgraced Mexican Federale who's hiding amongst the illegal immigrants on the Texas-Mexico border. Here he stumbles into a conspiracy involving a trigger-happy senator (DeNiro) and a wild-eyed vigilante (Johnson) who are cleaning up the border one bullet at a time. But he also runs up against a sexy immigration officer (Alba), a ruthless businessman (Fahey) and a trail of criminality leading to his nemesis Torrez (Seagal). As things get nasty, he gets help from his priest brother (Marin) and a feisty taco-truck lady (Rodriguez).

The Killer Inside Me Review

Good
Being based on the Jim Thompson novel, this could never be a cheery romp.

Indeed, Winterbottom keeps Thompson's bleakness intact, leaving us little to engage with. But the film has an earth beauty and is a haunting look at the dark side of being human.

Lou Ford (Affleck) is a small-town deputy in 1950s West Texas, where he's still struggling with childhood demons and feelings of inadequacy. Even though he has an adoring girlfriend (Hudson), he starts a torrid fling with a prostitute (Alba) who lives on the edge of town. And as he sets in motion an elaborate revenge plot, we discover that underneath his nice guy exterior Lou is a sadistic murderer. And he's only barely staying one step ahead of the investigators (including Bower, Koteas and Baker).

The Killer Inside Me Trailer

Lou Ford leads -what looks to be a pretty unremarkable existence, he's the deputy Sheriff of a small town but has two girlfriends one who works as a schoolteacher and the other a prostitute. When murders start happening in the sleepy West Texas town, no one is quite sure who's committing the murders. As investigators lean toward Lou as their prime suspect, he finds himself in a spiral of death as he struggles to clear his name. Things are never as they seem, the unassuming person the townsfolk thought they knew in Lou soon unravels and it becomes clear that all they were seeing was a facade.

Valentine's Day Review

Good
With an enormous ensemble cast and more intertwined plots than you can count, this fluffy concoction is shamelessly sentimental and silly, and yet it's also an undemanding crowd-pleaser.

Valentine's Day in Los Angeles brings a series of romantic crises. A flower seller (Kutcher) has proposed to his less-than-keen girlfriend (Alba), then discovers his best friend's (Garner) boyfriend (Dempsey) is married. A phone-sex operator (Hathaway) is afraid to tell her boyfriend (Grace) what she does for a living. An romance-hating publicist (Biel) is helping her client (Dane) manage a media storm. A group of teens (Swift, Lautner, Roberts and Jenkins) are grappling with chastity. And two strangers (Roberts and Cooper) strike up a conversation on a trans-Atlantic flight.

The Love Guru Review

Bad
There is a fine line between genius and junk, especially in the realm of comedy. What makes one audience member laugh can legitimately cause another to groan in disbelief. No one has been more adept at this schizophrenic approach to satire than Mike Myers. The kitchen sink cacophony of his big screen spoofs expertly illustrates the "anything for a laugh" paradigm. Sadly, his latest effort, the lame Love Guru, forgets to move beyond the groin to mine its wit. If cleverness were a symphony, Myers composed this tired tune for male organ only.

Born in America but raised in India, the self help guru Maurice Pitka (Myers) is tired of being known as the poor man's Deepak Chopra. When Darren Roanoke (Romany Malco), star player for the Toronto Maple Leafs, gets into a scoring slump near the start of the Stanley Cup finals, team owner Jane Bullard (Jessica Alba) and coach Cherkov (Verne Troyer) are desperate. Seems Roanke's wife (Meagan Good) has recently left him, and is now shacking up with the goalie for the opposing Los Angeles Kings, the infamously well-endowed Jacques "Le Coq" Grande (Justin Timberlake). If the Leafs have any chance at all of winning, they must find a way to mend the leader's marriage. The answer appears to be Pitka and his radical "DRAMA" method of enlightenment.

The Eye (2008) Review

Terrible
While it may be cliché to say it, the Asian horror phenomenon is officially dead -- and Jessica Alba killed it. Six years after Hong Kong's Pang brothers unleashed the original creepshow, those horror bottom feeders at Lionsgate have delivered The Eye, a mandated PG-13 retread. While it would be nice to say that the time spent in greenlight limbo aged the frightfest and it's slightly hackneyed organ transplant premise like fine wine, the truth is that all we end up with is overripe cheese.

Sydney Wells (Alba) is a famed concert violinist. At the age of five, a fireworks accident left her blind. She tried surgery at age 12, but it didn't work, so for the last 15 years, she's spent her life sightless. Now, big sister Helen (Parker Posey), who feels responsible for her condition, sets up another procedure. Sydney receives a set of donor corneas, and within weeks, she is seeing again. She's also having hallucinatory visions of burning people, suicidal school children, and a weird shadowy visage with a mouth full of ghost fangs. Seems the previous owner of these eyes died mysteriously and wants Sydney to experience the same visual hell she lived through -- and there is nothing our heroine, or her determined doctor (Alessandro Nivola) can do to stop it.

Awake Review

Bad
Surprising, really, that "anesthetic awareness" -- helpless, immobile and, it should be noted, very rare consciousness during surgery -- hasn't been explored in a thriller before. Or maybe it has and I don't remember; that would explain why Awake sounds so novel but feels so familiar. In Joby Harold's film, young millionaire Clay Beresford (Hayden Christensen) is undergoing a risky heart transplant operation when he realizes the anesthetic isn't working as it should -- he is completely and silently paralyzed, but continues to hear and feel everything around him. If the movie wanted to top itself, it could find a way for Christensen to transfer immediately from anesthetic awareness into catalepsy, and maybe knock off Poe's "Premature Burial." Unfortunately and despite its killer gimmick, Awake isn't consumed with that kind of B-movie zeal.

Clay, like so many men before him, tries to block out the pain by intense concentration on thoughts of Jessica Alba (playing his girlfriend Sam -- though oddly enough, Clay's strongest memories reveal nothing more explicit than Alba's demurely exposed back). His focus breaks down when he overhears some, shall we say, less than reassuring words from his doctors, and from there a trapped Clay races against time, desperately attempting to alert Sam and/or his possessive mother (Lena Olin) of the danger he's in.

Good Luck Chuck Review

Weak
Despite what the marketing folks would have you believe, Good Luck Chuck is not, in fact, an average guy/beautiful klutz romantic comedy, and it's pretty baffling that this is how they choose to sell it. Sure, Jessica Alba plays an endearing young girl who regularly gets the crap beat out of her in elaborate ways, but that's a rather irrelevant aspect to her character. Plus, that totally misses the point of what the movie is actually about: sex.

There is (very) slightly more to it, I suppose: Charming, commitmentphobe dentist Charlie (Dane Cook) is attempting to romance the reluctantly interested Cam (Jessica Alba). But the real snag in the relationship is Charlie's curse/good fortune to be a lucky charm for the lovelorn -- women sleep with him, and find their one true love with the next guy they date. So after Charlie takes advantage of his abilities by plowing his way through half of the population of Seattle, he begins to see the curse when he wants to both sleep with Cam and also get to be her one true love.

The Ten Review

Very Good
In a sane, level-headed and clear-eyed world, early '90s sketch group The State (also a TV show) would still be practicing their ambitious and absurd brand of screwball comedy. Sadly, Scooter Libby gets fresh air and sunshine while the boys and girls of The State have been relegated to obscurity, scattering like cockroaches in a well-lit kitchen to different comedic prospects. Most of the members found their way to Comedy Central's cannily-hilarious Reno 911! where State leads Thomas Lennon, Ben Garant, and Kerri Kenney are series cornerstones. Almost every other member of the troupe has made a recurring or cameo spot on the program but the effect has never been as lively or precarious as the best moments of The State.

With a few celebrities on board, the group assembles (with a few exceptions) for key member David Wain's The Ten, a foul-mouthed, dirty-as-diapers, Republican-baiting retelling of the Ten Commandments. The stories are stitched together by a loose narrative thread involving a man (Paul Rudd) serving as narrator who is leaving his wife (Famke Janssen) for a younger ditz (Jessica Alba).

Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer Review

Good
The NBA hands out a Most Improved Player Award at the end of each season. Hollywood does not have an equivalent distinction, though Fantastic Four director Tim Story would be a worthy candidate for this year's prize if it did.

Story's name was attached to the original Four film in 2005, but that discombobulated blockbuster based on the classic Marvel Comic books felt like meddling producers suggested the film to pieces before the finished product reached theaters. Critics and comic fans responded in kind with opinions that were not so kind, but Four turned a large enough profit to secure a punched ticket to sequel land for Story and his cast.

Into The Blue Review

Terrible
I wonder what went through the studio exec's head when he found out about the release schedule of Into the Blue. It's a movie about fun in the Caribbean sun that's coming out while the Caribbean is in hurricane season. It's an extended swimsuit ad that's coming out when people won't be buying swimsuits. That alone should start the pissed off product reps lining up at his door with baseball bats. But if he thinks that beating is bad, he should wait until the people that saw the movie show up.

Into the Blue isn't just a bad movie. It's an endless font of implausibility and boredom whose only redeeming quality is watching the his and hers sex symbols on the screen.

The Sleeping Dictionary Review

OK
You say colonial epic, I say Alba. No, not Alda, as in Alan Alda. Alba. As in Jessica Alba. In a period piece! The title actually refers to Alba's character: She's a Sarawak (look it up) native, assigned to teach the British imperialist who comes to rule her village how to speak the native tongue. She does this through sleeping with him. You know, figuratively. Faster than you can say "forbidden love," this all turns nasty for all parties. I can't say much for the wandering storyline (which is all too reminiscent of everything from Original Sin to Wide Sargasso Sea), but the cinematography is stellar for a direct-to-DVD movie, and Alba has a really naked back.

Fantastic Four Review

Weak
Fantastic? Not exactly, but Tim Story's take on Marvel Comic's first family of superheroes can be fun if your expectations are low enough.

This summer's second superhero saga, Fantastic Four explains how five members of a planned space expedition face exposure to a cosmic storm that alters each person's DNA, giving them unique powers. Brilliant scientist Reed Richards (Ioan Gruffudd) initiates the mission, which is bankrolled by his longtime rival Victor Von Doom (Julian McMahon). They are accompanied by Reed's buddy Ben Grimm (Michael Chiklis), Victor's director of genetic research; Sue Storm (Jessica Alba); and her cocky pilot brother, Johnny (Chris Evans).

Sin City Review

Excellent
You typically have to maintain low expectations for a comic book movie. For every Spider-Man, you get a bunch of Elektras and Daredevils. So really, what can you expect from one with a huge, B-list cast and three directors?

Surprise! Sin City is a mega-violent, highly potent vial of noir crack. And judging from the riotous burst of applause at the end of our screening, one that's destined to be a Matrix-style mass-cult classic.

Honey Review

Weak
Honey tries to apply for membership in at least three cliché-ridden subgenres: the nonmusical dance musical (complete with putting on a benefit show), the rise-and-fall-and-rise showbiz story, and the urban issues drama. The result is a movie that goes every which way but good, careening from scenes that all revolve around the same character but don't quite interlock. And so Honey is also a movie unsure not only of genre, but of what kind of bad movie it is: hilarious, dull, or an earnest near-miss.

This is what happens when you produce a vanity project for someone who hasn't quite graduated to B-movie star yet. Nothing against Jessica Alba; she's cute, she can dance okay, and she was pretty good on that FOX sci-fi show a few years ago. (No, not MANTIS. Or Strange Luck. Or VR-5. Or Millennium. Or even Tru Calling.) But her performance in Honey reminded me of a singer trying to act -- and Alba, as far as I know, isn't a singer.

Idle Hands Review

Bad
It's very frustrating. Teen movies can be good. The original Scream was good (although ruined by a sequel). What are they doing? She's All That? I Still Know? Varsity Blues? I could go on but you'll hit "close" on your browser. The newest teen movie, Idle Hands, is pretty bad.

Devon Sawa stars as Anton, a slacker who sits around his house all day, smoking weed, and watching television. When Anton's parents are killed, a mysterious force takes over Anton's hand. He unwillingly kills his two best friends (Seth Green and Eldon Henson) and doesn't seem that phased by it. I mean, he's worried what more damage he could do, but it doesn't really bother him. His friends refused to go to heaven (too far) and walk around as zombies for the rest of the film, helping Anton control the hand, and save his girlfriend (Jessica Alba, who I wouldn't mind saving).

Jessica Alba Talks About Awkwardly Meeting Eminem

Jessica Alba Eminem

'Sin City' star Jessica Alba learned to her surprise that she had been name-dropped in an Eminem song, despite only awkwardly bumping into him once at a gym. In the track, Eminem refers to Alba as his "wife-to-be", although the two only know each other because Alba entered a gym where Eminem was training while trying to find a friend of hers; director Bille Woodruff.

Alba explained the strange meeting with the D12 rapper, stating that: "Eminem was in a gym, boxing or something, but I thought my best friend was in there. I come barrelling in all heated because I can't find Bille, and it's like five big dudes, Eminem and an empty gym. Everyone stopped. I was trying to act all casual, looking around this small gym that my best friend obviously wasn't in. Then I just left. That was the only encounter I ever had with him."

Fantastic Four Review

Terrible
Who are these half-wit Hollywood clowns that keep hiringcleavage-candy actresses with no measurable talent to play laughably bespectacledscientists in action movies?

A few years ago it was Denise Richards as history's leastcredible nuclear physicist in the James Bond flick "TheWorld Is Not Enough." This January's demonic-horrorvideo-game clunker "AloneIn the Dark" featured party tart Tara Reidas an archeologist who could barely deliver a coherent sentence withoutmispronouncing words.

Now comes ring-a-dingy Jessica Alba -- hitherto known forplaying dancers and strippers -- as smokin' hot Sue Storm, a 23-year-old"director of genetic research" who becomes a radiation-mutatedsuperhero in the bumbling, big-budget but Z-movie-bad adaptation of Marvelcomics' "Fantastic Four."

Sent into space along with a paper-thin cast of compatriots(a geneticist ex-boyfriend, her failed-astronaut brother, an ex-NASA pilotand a transparently evil billionaire), Sue and this group of supposed geniusescan't even keep track of the glowing cloud of gases they're supposed tobe studying. Promptly overrun when the interstellar storm apparently sneaksup behind their space station, each of them returns home with strange newpowers.

Honey Review

Unbearable

Somehow the people at Universal Pictures got it into their heads that easy-on-the-eyes, thin-on-talent Jessica Alba (star of Fox's short-lived "Dark Angel") should be a movie star.

So apparently a room full of monkeys was recruited to write "Honey," a laughable follow-your-dreams disaster in which the actress plays a sprightly, adorably indomitable, J.Lo-inspired babe from the Bronx who becomes a music-video dance choreographer, turns down a director's demand for sex, gets black-listed, then realizes what's really important in life is opening a neighborhood dance studio for street kids.

Trite and graceless, it's supposed to be the story of the girl's struggle to make it in showbiz, but no sooner does she point at a TV and say, "Check it. That's what I'm talkin' about. I should be dancing in videos like this!" than a video director (David Moscow) sees her shaking her stuff in a club and offers her a job.
