"Sin City" Stars Talk A Big Game Of Female Empowerment, But Will The Movie Deliver?

Jessica Alba Eva Green Rosario Dawson Joseph Gordon-Levitt Josh Brolin Bruce Willis

Sin City: A Dame To Kill For isn’t out until this coming Thursday, August 21, but promotion has been going on for months. Maybe you’ve noticed that this time around, it’s mostly (if not all) focused on the ladies – from Jessica Alba’s no-longer damsel-in-distress Nancy, to Rosario Dawson’s dominatrix with a deadly attitude Gail, to the Dame herself – Eva Green as Ava Lord. These are no-nonsense, cliché-free female characters. Well, technically they’re all cliché, but that’s the point – it’s all very post-modern and ironic and noir-inspired, etc.

Jessica Alba
Yes, ok, the women are still strutting around in their underwear. But this time they are empowered, apparently.

Jessica Alba Doesn’t ‘Need’ To Work – Okay? So Serious Roles Only

Jessica Alba

In a blatent yet accidental admittance that she used to do anything for money, Jessica Alba has stated that she doesn’t really need to work anymore, and in light of that, will only accept really serious roles.

“When you have kids, you kind of think, I don’t need to work just to work. I want to sink my teeth into a character that makes it worth not being with my kids, or not being at the office,” explains Alba. “Having kids, having strong relationships with my husband, my friends, that it is my priority… that’s what really defines me, not a tabloid or a movie opening or a poster or an endorsement.” If no one is willing to take her seriously as an actor, then perhaps people will as an entrepreneur. Last year Jessica launched her own eco-friendly lifestyle company, The Honest Company, and most recently, she launched a new book: The Honest Life. Jessica compares her book to other celebrities authors, telling New York Daily News: “Gwyneth Paltrow probably lives a very similar lifestyle, but I didn't grow up with a bunch of money, so my tips are much more grounded: repurposing things and making things at home.”

Alba and environmental activist, Christopher Gavigan’s company sells affordable and 'unquestionably safe' baby products to help families live in the healthiest environment as possible, until Alba lands a role she thinks is serious enough, that is.

Pitch Perfect Star Rebel Wilson To Host MTV Movie Awards 2013

Rebel Wilson Sarah Silverman Russell Brand Amy Poehler Tina Fey Lindsay Lohan Jessica Alba

Rebel Wilson, the comedy actress currently starring in Pitch Perfect, will host the 2013 MTV Movie Awards, the network announced in a first look trailer on Thursday (December 20, 2012). Set to air on April 14, Wilson will become the first woman to host the event since Sarah Silverman emceed in 2007.

Female comedians are taking over next year's awards' ceremonies, with Amy Poehler and Tina Fey tasked with hosting the Golden Globes. The MTV Awards sometimes get it right with their hosts (Russell Brand, Andy Samberg, Sarah Silverman, Will Smith), though often get it very, very, wrong. Lindsay Lohan hosted in 2004, while Jessica Alba didn't exactly set the show alight in 2006. Anyway, Wilson - as the comedy actress of the moment - seems a pretty solid choice. The Australian played Brynn in the smash-hit Bridesmaids and went on to star in A Few Best Men, What To Expect When You're Expecting, and Pitch Perfect. She's currently writing a comedy named Super Fun for the ABC Network, and stars alongside Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson in the action-comedy Pain & Gain.

The 2012 MTV Movie Awards was held at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Los Angeles in June. It was dominated by The Hunger Games, Twilight and Bridesmaids.

Beyonce And Jay-Z Lose Their Claim On 'Blue Ivy'

Beyonce Knowles Jay Z Jessica Alba

That's right, Beyonce and Jay-Z, contrary to popular belief, are actually capable of failure. We didn't think it possible. If somewhere in the depths of the universe there's an allowance of Luck for Earth, those two are definitely using up a good 40% of the planet's limit- if that were the case we could probably even blame them for the European financial crisis. However, the ultimate power-couple have finally failed at something.

In January of this year, just after the birth of their baby Blue Ivy, Beyonce and Jay-Z filed to copy-write 'Blue Ivy'. Unfortunately for the 'Crazy in Love' couple, Blue Ivy is already in use by an events company of that name. The company was forced to defend their current branding, which they have used since 2009- right about the time baby Blue Ivy became merely a twinkle in the eyes of her parents.

Beyonce had wanted to use the name in the future to begin a line of baby-clothing, reports E! Celebrity baby clothing lines are nothing new and Gwen Stefani and Tori Spelling both have their own range. However, it's Jessica Alba that tops the baby-style list, with her business 'The Honest Company', which provides eco- and child-friendly baby products. On the company's website she said, "I created The Honest Company to help moms and to give all children a better, safer start". As much as setting your child up a business in its infancy is a great start in life, we far favour Jessica Alba's approach, honest.

Machete Review

Very Good
Essentially part three of the Grindhouse series, this old-style thriller sprang from Rodriguez's fake trailer. In some ways it should have stayed that short, because while it's riotously entertaining, there's nothing much to it.

Machete (Trejo) is a disgraced Mexican Federale who's hiding amongst the illegal immigrants on the Texas-Mexico border. Here he stumbles into a conspiracy involving a trigger-happy senator (DeNiro) and a wild-eyed vigilante (Johnson) who are cleaning up the border one bullet at a time. But he also runs up against a sexy immigration officer (Alba), a ruthless businessman (Fahey) and a trail of criminality leading to his nemesis Torrez (Seagal). As things get nasty, he gets help from his priest brother (Marin) and a feisty taco-truck lady (Rodriguez).

The Killer Inside Me Trailer

Lou Ford leads -what looks to be a pretty unremarkable existence, he's the deputy Sheriff of a small town but has two girlfriends one who works as a schoolteacher and the other a prostitute. When murders start happening in the sleepy West Texas town, no one is quite sure who's committing the murders. As investigators lean toward Lou as their prime suspect, he finds himself in a spiral of death as he struggles to clear his name. Things are never as they seem, the unassuming person the townsfolk thought they knew in Lou soon unravels and it becomes clear that all they were seeing was a facade.

Valentine's Day Review

Good
With an enormous ensemble cast and more intertwined plots than you can count, this fluffy concoction is shamelessly sentimental and silly, and yet it's also an undemanding crowd-pleaser.

Valentine's Day in Los Angeles brings a series of romantic crises. A flower seller (Kutcher) has proposed to his less-than-keen girlfriend (Alba), then discovers his best friend's (Garner) boyfriend (Dempsey) is married. A phone-sex operator (Hathaway) is afraid to tell her boyfriend (Grace) what she does for a living. An romance-hating publicist (Biel) is helping her client (Dane) manage a media storm. A group of teens (Swift, Lautner, Roberts and Jenkins) are grappling with chastity. And two strangers (Roberts and Cooper) strike up a conversation on a trans-Atlantic flight.

Awake Review

Bad
Surprising, really, that "anesthetic awareness" -- helpless, immobile and, it should be noted, very rare consciousness during surgery -- hasn't been explored in a thriller before. Or maybe it has and I don't remember; that would explain why Awake sounds so novel but feels so familiar. In Joby Harold's film, young millionaire Clay Beresford (Hayden Christensen) is undergoing a risky heart transplant operation when he realizes the anesthetic isn't working as it should -- he is completely and silently paralyzed, but continues to hear and feel everything around him. If the movie wanted to top itself, it could find a way for Christensen to transfer immediately from anesthetic awareness into catalepsy, and maybe knock off Poe's "Premature Burial." Unfortunately and despite its killer gimmick, Awake isn't consumed with that kind of B-movie zeal.

Clay, like so many men before him, tries to block out the pain by intense concentration on thoughts of Jessica Alba (playing his girlfriend Sam -- though oddly enough, Clay's strongest memories reveal nothing more explicit than Alba's demurely exposed back). His focus breaks down when he overhears some, shall we say, less than reassuring words from his doctors, and from there a trapped Clay races against time, desperately attempting to alert Sam and/or his possessive mother (Lena Olin) of the danger he's in.

Sin City Review

Excellent
You typically have to maintain low expectations for a comic book movie. For every Spider-Man, you get a bunch of Elektras and Daredevils. So really, what can you expect from one with a huge, B-list cast and three directors?

Surprise! Sin City is a mega-violent, highly potent vial of noir crack. And judging from the riotous burst of applause at the end of our screening, one that's destined to be a Matrix-style mass-cult classic.

Honey Review

Weak
Honey tries to apply for membership in at least three cliché-ridden subgenres: the nonmusical dance musical (complete with putting on a benefit show), the rise-and-fall-and-rise showbiz story, and the urban issues drama. The result is a movie that goes every which way but good, careening from scenes that all revolve around the same character but don't quite interlock. And so Honey is also a movie unsure not only of genre, but of what kind of bad movie it is: hilarious, dull, or an earnest near-miss.

This is what happens when you produce a vanity project for someone who hasn't quite graduated to B-movie star yet. Nothing against Jessica Alba; she's cute, she can dance okay, and she was pretty good on that FOX sci-fi show a few years ago. (No, not MANTIS. Or Strange Luck. Or VR-5. Or Millennium. Or even Tru Calling.) But her performance in Honey reminded me of a singer trying to act -- and Alba, as far as I know, isn't a singer.

Idle Hands Review

Bad
It's very frustrating. Teen movies can be good. The original Scream was good (although ruined by a sequel). What are they doing? She's All That? I Still Know? Varsity Blues? I could go on but you'll hit "close" on your browser. The newest teen movie, Idle Hands, is pretty bad.

Devon Sawa stars as Anton, a slacker who sits around his house all day, smoking weed, and watching television. When Anton's parents are killed, a mysterious force takes over Anton's hand. He unwillingly kills his two best friends (Seth Green and Eldon Henson) and doesn't seem that phased by it. I mean, he's worried what more damage he could do, but it doesn't really bother him. His friends refused to go to heaven (too far) and walk around as zombies for the rest of the film, helping Anton control the hand, and save his girlfriend (Jessica Alba, who I wouldn't mind saving).

Jessica Alba Talks About Awkwardly Meeting Eminem

Jessica Alba Eminem

'Sin City' star Jessica Alba learned to her surprise that she had been name-dropped in an Eminem song, despite only awkwardly bumping into him once at a gym. In the track, Eminem refers to Alba as his "wife-to-be", although the two only know each other because Alba entered a gym where Eminem was training while trying to find a friend of hers; director Bille Woodruff.

Related: Jessica Alba Opens Up About Being "Kind Of Insecure" Until Becoming A Mother

Alba explained the strange meeting with the D12 rapper, stating that: "Eminem was in a gym, boxing or something, but I thought my best friend was in there. I come barrelling in all heated because I can't find Bille, and it's like five big dudes, Eminem and an empty gym. Everyone stopped. I was trying to act all casual, looking around this small gym that my best friend obviously wasn't in. Then I just left. That was the only encounter I ever had with him."

Honey Review

Unbearable

Somehow the people at Universal Pictures got it into their heads that easy-on-the-eyes, thin-on-talent Jessica Alba (star of Fox's short-lived "Dark Angel") should be a movie star.

So apparently a room full of monkeys was recruited to write "Honey," a laughable follow-your-dreams disaster in which the actress plays a sprightly, adorably indomitable, J.Lo-inspired babe from the Bronx who becomes a music-video dance choreographer, turns down a director's demand for sex, gets black-listed, then realizes what's really important in life is opening a neighborhood dance studio for street kids.

Trite and graceless, it's supposed to be the story of the girl's struggle to make it in showbiz, but no sooner does she point at a TV and say, "Check it. That's what I'm talkin' about. I should be dancing in videos like this!" than a video director (David Moscow) sees her shaking her stuff in a club and offers her a job.
