Meet The 'Modern Family' Cast That Could Have Been (But We're Glad Wasn't)

Craig T Nelson Ed O'Neill Kristen Johnston Lisa Kudrow Jesse Tyler Ferguson Eric Stonestreet Ty Burrell Julie Bowen

We can’t imagine a more perfect cast that the one that Modern Family already has. Every single of one of them has made the roles their own, almost like they were written with them in mind. So you’ll be surprised to hear that hardly any of them were the first choice for the parts! But who did the producers have lined up before the perfect cast finally came together?

Modern Family Alternate Cast Craig T. Nelson was first choice to play Modern Family patriarch Jay Pritchett

Family patriarch Jay Pritchett was originally pegged to be played by Emmy Award winner Craig T. Nelson. Best known for his role as Hayden Fox in Coach and as the voice of Mr. Incredible in the 2004 animated film The Incredibles, producers originally approached Nelson although his pay expectations were too high. Ed O’Neill, who the role eventually went to (and who just IS Jay) explained, “When I read [the script] I thought, ‘Oh boy, this is pretty good.’ And I called my managed and he said, ‘Well, they’re out to Craig T. Nelson.’” We’re grateful that they couldn’t afford Nelson because no-one plays grumpy good guy Jay Pritchard quite like Ed O’Neill.  We're also sure that Nelson is kicking himself since Sofia Vergara could have been his onscreen wife!  We wonder if he'd known that to begin with it would have made a difference?

When Wentworth Miller outed himself as gay in response to an invite from a Russia film festival, he was inundated with messages of support for his public outing and for protesting the archaic anti-homosexuality legislation rife in the former communist country. After receiving praise from the likes Neil Patrick Harris, Ellen DeGeneres and Jesse Tyler Ferguson on Twitter, the latest star to tip their hat at Wentworth is White Collar star Matt Boomer.

Untraceable Review

Bad
It would be wonderful if this review of the newest cyber-torture-stalker-thriller could begin with the words "Untraceable is unwatchable," but sadly that would be a lie. Our tastes have very simply become too degraded over the years for us not to have become used to it as studios have continued to shove out purposeless dreck like this. Call it a formula inoculation, as the films keep coming, with only the slightest noticeable tweaks to their dependable structure (as necessitated by the latest spasms in popular culture that allow a soupcon of relevancy to creep in), we very simply get used to it, no matter how awful.

And awful it is. In a desperate bid to glom on to the Internet's evergreen supposed hipness, the script (a lifeless accumulation of the expected by a trio of writers who really should know better) puts us inside an FBI cyber-crime unit where flint-eyed but tender-hearted agent Jennifer Marsh (Diane Lane) tracks down the worst of the online worst. Stirring from her bank of computer monitors only to get coffee or crack wise with fellow agent Griffin Dowd (Colin Hanks), Marsh is your prototypical wounded female cop with a young daughter and fretful mother at home, and a dead husband in her memory. (If her character had been male they'd have given her a bad temper and a drinking problem, but at least the sarcastic partner bit is gender neutral.) She gets put on the kind of case that (literally) only exists in the movies. Some psycho sets up a website called "Kill With Me" whose hook is that the more people view it, the quicker the subject on camera dies by some fiendish means. The first time out, it's a kitten; after that a person, and then another, and then another...
