Ben Affleck was so sure he would miss out on the top acting prize at the Venice Film Festival, he flew back home to Los Angeles early.
The Oscar-winner picked up the Best Actor award for his portrayal of TV SUPERMAN GEORGE REEVES in the film HOLLYWOODLAND.
He explains, "If I thought for a second that there were going to be awards for anybody, I would have stayed!"
Affleck claims the role has given him a chance to get his career back on track after a string of film flops including Jersey Girl and Gigli.
He adds, "I've been in movies that earned a lot of money that... I wish I wasn't in honestly. I was a little cavalier before, but having a child makes me think about things differently.
"I have to prove myself all over again, but I don't mind that. Once I realised where things were going, I just said, 'OK, let me make sure I'm in a place where I don't have to worry about being on FAMILY FEUD for dough in five years and then I'll just do what I can be proud of.'
"The only thing that matters to me is my daughter being able to be proud of her old man."
Ben Affleck credits the media furore surrounding his relationship with Jennifer Lopez and the critical mauling of the two movies they made together with helping him "grow up".
The actor turned his back on Hollywood and has been a virtual recluse since his split from Lopez and the disastrous performances of Gigli and Jersey Girl in 2003 and 2004.
Affleck is now back with new movie HOLLYWOODLAND - for which he won the Best Actor Award at the Venice Film Festival - and he insists he has learned much from the episode.
Affleck - now happily married to Jennifer Garner and with a baby daughter VIOLET - tells PageSix.com, "I try to appreciate what a privileged life I have, and the great things about being in a business that doesn't encourage self-control, I'm more humble, less callous about certain things, but also not given to beating myself up so much. It took me a long time to grow up, find my centre, evolve."
The Hollywood director was horrified during the filming of the 2004 movie Jersey Girl, because Affleck pulled his favourite prank, Fruit Basket, with disturbing regularity.
Smith tells MAXIM, "I'd be sitting in the director's chair and I'd be watching a playback, and he'd stand behind me. Every once in a while I'd feel something on my neck. I'd be like, 'What the f**k was that?'
