Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie Review

OK

Nearly 25 years after the sitcom debuted, Edina and Patsy arrive on the big screen to continue their drunken antics, although without the usual enthusiastic laugh-track everything feels eerily muted. Thankfully, there's still a lot of fun to be had, including well-aimed jabs at celebrity culture. Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley are still hilarious in their signature roles. And it's hard to get too worried about the limp plot when every scene is packed with amusing cameo appearances.

With her PR agency fading and her money spent on expanding her home, Edina (Saunders) discovers that her credit cards are "broken" and her champagne fridge is empty. So she and her pal Patsy (Lumley) set out to make some cash. After failing to sell her memoirs, Edina sets out to woo Kate Moss as a client. But this goes spectacularly wrong when Kate ends up falling off a balcony into the Thames. Now under investigation, Eddie and Pats flee to the South of France to find Patsy's wealthy ex (Barry Humphreys). They're chased by a detective (Robert Webb), who's the boyfriend of Edina's daughter Saffron (Julia Sawalha), whose teen daughter (Indeharna Donaldson-Holness) has run off with them.

Written by Saunders, the script is very loose, bouncing around without much focus before a series of impatient, nonsensical conclusions. Basically, it's little more than a flimsy framework that includes brief scenes for series regulars (including Jane Horrock's airhead assistant, June Whitfield's dotty mum, Celia Imrie's rival PR and Kathy Burke's bulldog editor), plus a few new characters like Chris Colfer's stylist. All of these people have their moments, but never quite emerge as much more than comedy sketch figures. On the other hand, the big-screen format allows Saunders and Lumley to give Edina and Patsy a bit of surprising emotional depth amid the usual slapstick nuttiness.

Benedict Cumberbatch Wanted To Be In Absolutely Fabulous

Benedict Cumberbatch Absolutely Fabulous Jennifer Saunders Joanna Lumley

After running for six seasons over 21 years, from 1992 to 2013, the classic British sitcom Absolutely Fabulous arrives on the big screen in a flurry of champagne and cameos. Originally a short sketch on the French & Saunders show, the enduring characters have had a rather patchy ride, with some episodes funnier than others.

Benedict Cumberbatch at a Q&A with US President Barack Obama at London's Lindley Hall.

It was a year and a half ago that writer-star Jennifer Saunders was challenged by Dawn French to make the movie. "We were doing our New Year's show on Radio 2", Saunders says, "And Dawn said, 'What are you doing in the next year?' I said, 'I'm going to write the Ab Fab film.' She said, 'Alright. And if you don't, you have to pay me ten thousand pounds!' And I said, 'Okay.' It was the greatest incentive I ever had. I probably wouldn't have done it without that bet."

Has 'Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie' Lived Up To Its Name?

Joanna Lumley Jennifer Saunders

The title 'Absolutely Fabulous' has turned out to be a bit of an over-statement for this movie according to the latest reviews, but generally it has wound up to be an enjoyable affair for fans of the TV show; quite a feat given that the majority of the cast aren't actually actors.

Absolutely FabulousAbsolutely Fabulous or absolutely vacuous?

Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley are back as Edina Monsoon and Patsy Stone in 'Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie'. There's no denying that this duo is no less entertaining than they originally were in the television series, but the same can't be said for the other stars of the show. According to the Metro, the comedy was 'dampened by giving too much screen time to famous people who struggle to play themselves convincingly', while the Guardian agreed that it 'becomes less funny with every syllable that Stella [McCartney] is allowed to say' and described Kate Moss' performance as 'uncompromisingly wooden'.

BBC Set To Bring PG Wodehouse's 'Blandings' To TV

Timothy Spall Jennifer Saunders

PG Wodehouse's Blandings comic series is to be brought to the small screen in the very near future, with the BBC announcing that the popular series will be brought back to television for the first time since 1967.

Lord Emsworth's fictitious residence of Blandings Castle will return to TV screens in the not too distant future (tomorrow actually - Jan 13), as the channel looks to compete with ITV's iron grip on Sunday night programming with the ever-popular Downton Abbey. Although Steven Fry and Hugh Laurie's Jeeves and Wooster and Heavy Weather with Peter O'Toole and Richard Briers brought Wodehouse to the small screen more recently, it has still been some time since we last saw a full Blandings-set series. With such a lengthy time away from the screen, there could be a chance that the new show will not take off as the corporation hopes, but a look at the cast and crew makes things look quite promising indeed.

Timothy Spall, Jack Farthing, Mark Williams and Jennifer Saunders will take on the staring roles in the film as the inhabitants of the famous fictitious manor home and with Paul Seed (Just William) on board to direct and Guy Andrews (Lost in Austen, Absolute Power) penning the series, things are looking positive for the new show.

Coraline Review

Very Good
Remember The Nightmare Before Christmas? The holiday classic is invariably credited to its producer and story writer Tim Burton, but the film was actually directed by New Jersey native Henry Selick, an animator on Pete's Dragon and The Fox and the Hound who met Burton when they both worked at Disney in the '80s. Selick finally returns to the world of stop-motion animation once again, which he used solely in both Nightmare and the 1996 Roald Dahl adaptation James and the Giant Peach, with Coraline, another adaptation of a cryptic children's fable, this one written by literary goth overlord Neil Gaiman.

Like Alice in Wonderland reconfigured for David Lynch fans, this eerie-yet-elegant tale sets its sights on the blue-haired, oddly-named girl who gives the film its title. Voiced with energy and outre charm by Dakota Fanning, Coraline is the only child of a pair of Michigan-alum parents (Teri Hatcher and John Hodgman) who write garden catalogues as their daughter explores the dire tundra outside their new home. Prompted by curiosity and ongoing rows over mom's bad casserole and drab taste in clothing, the parilous scamp ultimately unlocks a small door and finds herself in a world where the land outside glows like Christmas lights, her Other Father is a buoyant inventor, and her Other Mother (both voiced by the same players) always cooks a luxurious feast. The catch: Everyone, including the neighbors and their pets, has black buttons for eyes.

Shrek 2 Review

Weak

Two-thirds of the way through the original "Shrek," the quite creatively warped, CGI-animated fairytale fell victim to an inane plot crutch when its grumpy but lovestruck, big-green-ogre anti-hero overheard part of a conversation -- lovely Princess Fiona describing herself as ugly after transforming into an ogre too -- and thought she was talking about him.

This stupid misunderstanding between romantics (and the fact that it never occurs to thick-witted Fiona that Shrek might like her more as an ogre) didn't ruin the movie, but the fact that it drives the rest of the story was an insult to all the hilariously astute, genre-mocking that had come before it.

Unfortunately, "Shrek 2" -- in which the newlywed ogres visit Fiona's disapproving (and human) royal Mum and Dad -- is predicated entirely on just such "Three's Company"-quality contrivances, requiring all the characters to behave like jackasses in order for the plot to advance.
