Jennifer Lawrence has teamed with director David O. Russell again this time for biopic, Joy, the amazing true story of 'miracle mop' inventor Joy Mangano. The film follows Mangano as she overcomes the odds (and her family) to fulfil her dreams, after finding the confidence to finally believe in herself.

“This particular woman has her own dreams and has her own aspirations that she's put on hold for her entire life and I think that’s a huge reason why the story spanned for so long, for four generations,” Lawrence said of her character.

“How long can you keep putting other people in front, before yourself? Before you finally decide 'there’s something inside me that has to live that has to breathe'.” Mangano went from being a struggling single mother to a successful businesswoman and the film shows the strife that both she and her family went through to make her dreams come true against the odds.

One of Joy’s main obstacles to success was her own family, who didn't support her aspirations because they wanted to protect her. “Joy has a very kind of complicated family dynamic,” Lawrence explains.

“Because she loves her family to the ends of the earth, as most of us do and they love her dearly, but they don't support her. But to them it’s out of love, it’s to try and protect her.” But ultimately what turns things around for Joy is when she finds confidence in herself and is able to convince others that she has what it takes not only to be the inventor, but also the face of the ‘miracle mop.’

“When she finally follows these dreams and has enough faith in herself to move forward it’s unstoppable. When that happens it’s addicting, when you get strength in yourself and you get confidence,” Lawrence adds.

Once Joy found that confidence she became the face of the ‘miracle mop’ on the Home Shopping Network and saw the product smash sales records. “She knew she could sell the mop, she’s a mother of two cleaning all day, she knows about cleaning products,” Lawrence explained.

“She knows these women she's selling to and so finally she just had to gather the confidence and say, ‘I'm the one that these people want to be seeing’ and she was right.” Lawrence has already been nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance as Mangano and another Oscar nod is likely to be right around the corner. Joy hits US theatres on December 25th.
