Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence has dampened rumours of an upcoming series of prequel movies to the franchise, saying it’s “too soon” to be thinking about such a move, and doubting that she would be involved in any case.

Mockingjay Part 2 was released at the end of November and topped the box offices on both sides of the Atlantic, but didn’t perform quite as well financially as Lionsgate studio had hoped. Last week, their vice chairman of entertainment Michael Burns suggested that a series of movies might success with audiences.

However, Lawrence seemed unsupportive of the idea when she was asked about it at the red carpet premiere of her new film Joy in New York on Sunday night (December 13th). “I wouldn’t be involved,” the Oscar-winner, who has played Katniss Everdeen in all four films, told Variety. “I think it’s too soon. They’ve got to let the body get cold, in my opinion.”

According to Burns, such a series would be developed from elements of Suzanne Collins’ ‘Hunger Games’ novels that speak of a dystopian North America, and he claimed that material was there to be mined so that the franchise could “live on and on and on”.

Mockingjay Part 2 was always likely to be the last time Lawrence played Katniss, as it’s the end of her natural character arc. However, the new movie and its similarly arena-less predecessor suffered the weakest reviews of any of the four instalments, cueing rumours of a reboot by some industry insiders.

25 year old Lawrence seems to be intent on moving away from blockbuster franchise fare with this statement. Her role as Mystique in X-Men: Apocalypse next year is set to be her final reprisal of the shape-shifting mutant. Recently, she also expressed an interest in directing movies in the future.
