Jennifer Lawrence will take the lead role in 'Serena'.

The Oscar-nominated actress - who will next be seen in eagerly anticipated novel adaptation 'The Hunger Games' - will star opposite Bradley Cooper in the project, to be directed by Susanne Bier.

The film, based on the book by Ron Rash, tells the tale of newlyweds George and Serena Pemberton, who move to North Carolina with the intention of starting a timber business.

However, when things do not go well when Serena discovers she cannot get pregnant, and she tries to kill her husband's illegitimate son.

Susanne is replacing Darren Aronofsky on the project, while Jennifer is believed to be taking on the role of Serena from Angelina Jolie, who gave serious consideration to the part.

The project begins shooting soon, meaning Jennifer has a busy schedule ahead with promotion for 'The Hunger Games' - which also stars Liam Hemsworth and Woody Harrelson.

Jennifer will also star alongside Bradley in David O'Russell's 'The Silver Linings Playbook'.
