According to E!News, the co-stars break up was "was very amicable" with a source blaming the pair's successful careers. "They spent a lot of time apart because of work, and it was difficult on their relationship," a source told the site.
The couple first started dating in 2011 after meeting on the set of X-Men: First Class. They then briefly split in 2013, before getting back together a few months later when they re-teamed for X-Men: Days of Future Past.
In May, Lawrence spoke to Marie Claire magazine about her long distance relationship with Hoult, hinting that the couple weren't ready to take things to the next level yet.
"We're so young that it would almost be like, if we lived in the same city, what would happen? We'd be living together," the actress said. Adding, "At least this way he's in the same boat as I am: We can go out and have our own lives and know that we have each other."
The Hunger Games star also revealed the couple agree to "mutually ignore each other" when they're busy. "Neither of us gets mad when the other doesn't text back or call. Life's super busy," said Lawrence. "Obviously you know what they're doing, and you trust them."
