Mistresses has been renewed for a fourth season. The hit ABC show, based on the British television series of the same name, will return to our screens next year. The network confirmed the renewal of Mistresses on Friday (24th September).

ABC has renewed the series for 14 more episodes which are slated for release in summer 2016, as TVLine reports.

Throughout its three seasons, Mistresses has continued to pull in a respectable audience although the audience size has certainly decreased since the first season. The finale of season 3 drew in 2.7 million viewers in the U.S. and received a rating of 0.6.

The series centres on four female friends –  Karen, Joss, April and Calista – as they try to find love, happiness and success amidst the background of intertwining (and often scandalous) romantic entanglements.

The character of Calista is played by Jennifer Esposito. Esposito joined Mistresses in season three as a replacement for Alyssa Milano’s character, Savi. Esposito will not be returning for the upcoming series as her contract was for one year only. Her character was last seen (spoiler alert) in a prison cell considering suicide so this may be a way in which her absence from the next season can be explained.

Mistresses has had a rocky history. Last year, after the finale of the series’ second season, ABC decided to renew the series at the last minute on the proviso that the series relocate to Vancouver. The series was previously filmed in Los Angeles and the move was in order to save money on production costs.
