It's all or nothing for this comedy
Building upon the template of Breaking Bad, We’re The Millers tells the story of a man out of his depth, trafficking a serious amount of ‘product’ when he has no real idea what he’s doing.
Can Aniston bring the laughs?
It’s a solid premise for a family-fun movie: man pretends major Hollywood star is his wife and brings goofy comic relief ‘son’ and grumpy hormonal ‘daughter’ along for the ride. The name forgetting joke was always going to be in there somewhere, but can We’re The Millers succeed where films like Identity Thief have failed?
If that’s to happen, a strong performance from the young Will Poulter is paramount. The young British star has seen his reputation rise after numerous spots on U.K comedy shows, starting off with CBBC, but now, after solid performances in Narnia and Wild Bill, here’s his chance to flex that comedy muscle in a major comedy blockbuster.
Jason Sudeikis and Jennifer Anniston have seen it all before, they’re made for these roles, but it’s the latter who has to bear all to prove she’s a stripper to an angry drug lord. That didn’t come easy.
"I was on a very like, greens and vegetables and lean proteins and kale,” she told Access Hollywood about the lead up to the big strip. “But I did eat that day," she added (the day of the scene). “When I really wanted to have a cheat day. I had to have a kale chip.”
"There was some major strapping and organizing," she admits. "I had no taping. I really just doubled my bras. I had a thong and then two pairs of underwear. Why I thought that was going to help protect anything is beyond me."
Check out the clips and make your own mind up; we can take or leave Poulter’s slapstick spider bite scene, but his singing along to the radio? Well that cracked us up a bit. Our feeling is We’re The Millers will either be a giant flop or a mega hit – these films rarely find a middle ground.
We're The Millers is out August 7th, 2013.
