Jennifer Aniston is under fire after describing herself as a retard, live on US television. The actress - famed for her role as Rachel Green in the multi-award winning sitcom Friends - was promoting her new movie The Switch on Live with Regis and Kelly when she said, "Yes, I play dress up! I do it for a living, like a retard!". The statement has angered disability groups including The Arc, an organisation set up to provide support to those with intellectual disabilities - their CEO Peter Berns told US Magazine, "She is using language that is offensive to a large segment of the population in this country. Every time folks hear that word, it kind of reminds them of all the discrimination and oppression they've experienced in their lives".
It's not the first time Aniston has been publicly denounced recently - just earlier this week, the Fox News host BILL O'REILLY said the 41-year-old was, "destructive to our society", following comments she had made about marriage.
Since the finale of Friends in 2004, the EMMY AWARD winning actress has featured in a number of successful Hollywood movies, most notably alongside Ben Stiller in Along Came Polly, and with Owen Wilson in Marley & Me. In her new film The Switch - released today - she plays a single woman who uses a sperm donor to get pregnant.
