Jenna Coleman's character Clara took on the role of the Doctor in the latest episode of BBC show 'Doctor Who' entitled 'Flatline' - but how does that leave the real Doctor feeling about his companion?

The Doctor's trapped in the TARDIS in 'Flatline'

The tension between the Doctor and Clara has been at a peak since, well, since he regenerated from the happy-go-lucky Matt Smith facade to the grumpy and sour-tempered image of Peter Capaldi. But Saturday's episode (October 18th 2014), marked a turning point as Clara was forced to think like a Timelord when they landed in a particularly dangerous situation in Bristol. The TARDIS appeared to be inexplicably shrinking from the exterior, which ultimately left the Doctor stuck inside and Clara on the outside attempting to find and fix the problem.

Peter Capaldi Jenna-louise Coleman Steven Moffat

Doctor Who anticipation has never been stronger than in recent times as fans prepared themselves for season eight of this science-fiction institution and the introduction of the twelfth doctor played by 56-year-old Scot, Peter Capaldi. The opening episode, entitled Deep Breath, premiered this Saturday (23rd August) and has understandably been put under several microscopes by various reviewers. But what’s the outcome?

Actor Peter Capaldi will become the first identifiably Scottish Timelord when he takes over from current Doc Matt Smith during the eagerly awaited Christmas regeneration episode of Doctor Who. Smith's recently announced successor will be retaining the distinctive Glaswegian tones that helped give his foul mouthed The Thick of It character Malcolm Tucker his distinctive voice.

Peter Jackson May Direct 'Doctor Who' Episode, For A Golden Dalek

Peter Jackson Peter Capaldi Steven Moffat Jenna-louise Coleman

Director Peter Jackson expressed an interest in directing an episode of the BBC's long-running time travel drama, Doctor Who, to Entertainment Weekly. The Hobbit director said he'd direct an entire episode with just a golden dalek for pay even though he's known to already have two daleks. The Kiwi filmmaker said "They don't even have to pay me, but I have got my eye on one of those nice new gold-coloured Daleks. They must have a spare one."

However, there has now been a development to Jackson's aspirations: it seems that DW writer Steven Moffat has given a one-off episode the nod. During a recent Q & A event in Edinburgh, the showrunner addressed Jackson's request. "He's serious about it. We talked at The Hobbit premiere - he just wants a Dalek. So we'll give him a Dalek and he'll direct an episode. I think he'd like to us to go to New Zealand. I think it's entirely possible," he said via Blogtor Who.

Matt Smith Jenna-louise Coleman

Let’s say it together now: NEW DOCTOR! The iconic BBC series Doctor Who is gearing up to reveal its chosen replacement for current star Matt Smith, who will depart after this year’s Christmas special (tear). The announcement will be made in a half hour special on BBC1 this Sunday. However, you won’t see the programme in any printed or online TV Guide.

It's almost time to say goodbye to Smith...

It seems that the DW team is so keen on keeping the secret of the new Doctor’s identity, that they did not even want to write the actor’s name or give away any hints in the programmes, so instead of billing the programme under its actual name Doctor Who: The New Doctor, it was billed as an episode of Celebrity Mastermind. At the time of the article this was still the listing.

Ben Daniels Is New Favourite For 'Doctor Who' Job: Could He Be The One?

Ben Daniels Doctor Who Daniel Kaluuya Ben Whishaw Sue Perkins Olivia Colman Jenna-louise Coleman Domhnall Gleeson Chiwetel Ejiofor Steven Moffat Matt Smith David Tennant Rory Kinnear Dominic Cooper

Ben Daniels is the latest name to become the favourite to inherit the role of Doctor Who in the long-running BBC series. Very soon there'll be very few British male actors who haven't been rumoured to be taking over the controls to the TARDIS as the Merlin actor now has the most favourable odds at 6/1. With previous odds of 16/1, Chiwetel Ejiofor (Salt, American Gangster) now closely follows Daniels at 7/1.

Ben Daniels
Could Ben Daniels Take Over From Matt Smith As The New Doctor?

However, chances are the new Who may not be a male actor at all; there have been calls for the new Doctor to be female, which would mark a first for the series which has run since 1963.
