The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 Trailer

President Snow has a message for the people of Panem in a mock propaganda clip and the first The Hunger Games: Mockingjay teaser. Appearing dressed in white and sitting on a white throne in a white room, Snow addresses the citizens of Panem with a message. "Since the dark days, our nation has known only peace," he begins.

"Your hard work feeds us and in return we feed and protect you," Snow continues. "But if you resist the system you starve yourself. If you fight against it, it is you who will bleed." The camera pans out and we see sweet Peeta standing blank-faced next to the President.

In the movie, Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) is living in District 13 after bringing down The Hunger Games. Under the leadership of President Coin (Julianne Moore), Katniss embarks on a quest to save her beloved friend Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) and the nation.

Only Lovers Left Alive Trailer

An ancient vampire named Adam is desperate to remain hidden from the world in his Detroit home. But that's harder than it looks as people are becoming increasingly interested in the music he makes and his mysterious ways. However, it seems music is not his only passion when his old lover Eve makes her way over to his home to rekindle their long lost feelings for each other. Enamoured at the sight of each other, it isn't long before all their attentions are focused on each other, but things aren't as easy as they should be when Eve's perpetually irritating little sister Ava shows up to see them and proceeds to test Adam and Eve's relationship to the limits as Adam struggles to contain his frustration at having her around. The pair have more to worry about, however, such as how they are going to survive in a quickly decaying world.

'Only Lovers Left Alive' is a hearty vampire flick written and directed by Jim Jarmusch ('Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai', 'Broken Flowers', 'Dead Man'). What makes it different to vamp films of recent times, however, is that the characters' monstrous natures take a bit of a back seat as romance and drama become the movie's main themes. It is due for release in the UK on February 21st 2014.

Boardwalk Empire Calling It Quits After Five Seasons - Is That Enough?

Steve Buscemi Jeffrey Wright

While Boardwalk Empire has never hit the narrative heights of shows like The Sopranos, The Wire and most recently, Breaking Bad, it has always proved to be an aesthetic feast; chock-a-block with whip-smart dialogue and some of the most elaborate camerawork allowed on network television.

Boardwalk Empire logo

So the news that HBO have decided to make the prohibition drama’s fifth season its final one saddens me; there’s so much more to come from the trifecta of disobedience that is Atlantic City, Chicago and New York. And how will the writers effectively wrap up the brooding tensions that have so often come to the fore?

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Review

Extraordinary

After 2012's The Hunger Games caught us off-guard with its subtle themes, this sequel more than lives up to the hype, dramatically expanding the scale of the action while letting the actors deepen their characters. It's a full-on action epic that cleverly retains author Suzanne Collins' narrative trick of telling the story through a flawed perspective. And it provides the needed push to give the whole saga real momentum.

We join our heroes not long after the last film ended: Katniss and Peeta (Lawrence and Hutcherson) are in trouble for challenging the authority of President Snow (Sutherland) and sowing the seeds of rebellion in the districts. Now they have to travel around the nation with their team - drunken mentor Haymitch (Harrelson), preening manager Effie (Banks), quietly subversive designer Cinna (Kravitz) - soothing ruffled feathers. But of course they only make things worse. So new Gamesmaker Plutarch (Hoffman) plots a way to force them back into the games with all of the past victors, so they can be wiped out for good. And Katniss is so busy worrying about protecting Peeta that she fails to remember who the true enemy is.

Screenwriters Beaufoy and deBruyn (aka Oscar-winner Michael Arndt) inventively maintain Katniss' narrow, inaccurate point-of-view right through the film, which keeps the audience wrong-footed all the way to the end. It's an exhilarating trick that makes the tour of the districts painfully dull and the return to the games utterly horrifying. It also gives Lawrence the chance to flex her own Oscar-winning chops, further tormenting us with her inability to choose between two good men: Peeta and Gale (Hemsworth), her pal back home. She certainly doesn't trust newcomers like the mouthy Johanna (Malone) or the too-hunky Finnick (Claflin).

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Trailer

After becoming the first duo to win the annual Hunger Games following its 74th year, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark have spread hope among the people of Panem who now feel the possibility of a revolution. However, the Capitol realise how dangerous this could be for their ordered, totalitarian society and force them to compete once again, alongside 22 other previous winners in the The Quarter Quell - an event that happens every 25th years and allows the Capitol to invent a new twist for the year's Games. Tensions arise between Katniss and Peeta who both want the other to be the victor in the 75th Hunger Games and do everything within their power to protect each other.

Lawrence impressed fans with her anecdotes of clumsiness and her gentle humour. She commented on the difficulties she faced whilst filming physical scenes, stating "running and trying not to hit myself in the face with my bow, those were my two greatest challenges." She also referenced one scene in which she wears -in a propaganda photograph shoot- a vast wedding dress: five feet in diameter. Of the costume she said it "was one of the hardest things I've done in my life".

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - Teaser Trailer

Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close Review

Good

Based on the Jonathan Safran Foer novel, this film holds its heavy emotional weight in check right up to a rather overwrought conclusion. But along the way, its characters worm their way under our skin.

Oskar (Horn) is the son of a jeweller (Hanks) who died in the World Trade Center on 9/11. A year later, he's still struggling to make sense of what he calls "the worst day", worrying that his sense of his father is fading away. So when he finds a key in his father's things, Oskar embarks on a quest to find the lock. His mother (Bullock) is lost in her own grief, but Oskar finds companionship in the mute stranger (von Sydow) who rents a room from his granny (Caldwell).

With a dense Alexandre Desplat score, textured Chris Menges cinematography and fluid editing by Claire Simpson, this film feels almost like a wave that engulfs us right from the eerily effective opening shot. Daldry has done this before (see The Hours), although this film also has a more manipulative plot in which each character and situation seem to be packed with deeper meaning.
Fortunately, Oskar's sense of yearning helps undermine the sentiment.

Horn is terrific in every scene, beautifully bringing out Oskar's autistic quirks without letting us feel any pity. The way he so brutally dismisses his mother is heartbreaking because it's so honest, and his growing bond with von Sydow's enigmatic, engagingly cheeky renter is fascinating to watch. Bullock gets her most complex role since Crash, and Davis gives yet another terrific supporting turn as one of the first people Oskar encounters on his journey.

Where the film wobbles is in its over-reverent treatment of 9/11 itself, as if Oskar's grief is any more intense because his father died in such a public way.
It's the quieter, more personal aspects of the story that are far more moving, especially as the plot takes some lovely twists in the final act. But Daldry and screenwriter Roth seem even more obsessed with finding a cathartic resolution than Oskar himself, leading to final scenes that feel tidy and a bit sappy. Even so, the film leaves us emotionally stirred in all the right ways.

Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close Trailer

Oskar Schell is an eleven year old genius who views the world differently to others. He is also a Francophile, an amateur inventor and a pacifist. He's very close to his father and together they make it their mission to find something from every decade of the twentieth century in what he called a 'reconnaissance mission.'

Angels In America Review

Good
There are times when Mike Nichols' long-awaited HBO adaptation of Tony Kushner's award-riddled Reagan-era AIDS epic play, Angels in America, just about achieves that grand moment of completion that it's been striving for, and the failure to do so is almost heartbreaking. There are numerous reasons why Kushner's play has never been brought to film before, despite serving for many years as the landmark theatrical statement on AIDS in the 1980s - the lyrical counterpoint to the factual reportage of the book and film And the Band Played On - and highest among them is its length. Nichols' version takes the play at its original, somewhat off-putting size, divided up into two three-hour parts, and does pretty much the best with its material that one could ask for; any problems with the finished product are likely Kushner's own.

Part one, "Millennium Approaches" is full of ominous portents, plague and destruction, the rampant spread of AIDS in the chilly clime of '80s conservatism, while the second, "Perestroika" makes the political issues bandied about earlier in the film devastatingly personal. The story runs from 1985 to 1990 and takes in a broad sweep of characters, but not nearly as many as other writers would have packed in, simply to give a broader demographic sampling. Central to the film is Prior Walter (Justin Kirk), a 30-year-old AIDS sufferer whose boyfriend Louis (Ben Shenkman) leaves him in an astonishingly heartless manner, only to take up soon after with recently uncloseted U.S. attorney Joe Pitt (Patrick Wilson). Left mostly to his own devices, with only his friend Belize (Jeffery Wright) to help, as Walter gets sicker, he begins to have visions of an angel (Emma Thompson, odd, arrogant and completely captivating), determined to make him a prophet, claiming that God has deserted the world and that humans are at fault.

Ride With The Devil Review

Good

As Civil War dramas go, the unromanticized anti-epic "Ride With the Devil" is the polar opposite of "Gone With the Wind."

Bleak, deceptively simple and realistic, the battles are dirty, bloody and unwieldy, the heroes are reluctant young soldiers, fighting only because they feel compelled to do so.

It's a story of a handful of provisional soldiers in a part of the Civil War fought on the Western frontier of Missouri -- hundreds of miles from the definitive action -- where, in the absence of official battalions from the North or the South, neighbors have taken up arms against each other in hit-and-run guerrilla skirmishes that will ultimately decide nothing.
