Micmacs [Micmacs A Tire-larigot] Review

Very Good
Back in Amelie mode, Jeunet creates a wonderfully entertaining romp about a group of outsiders and manages to slip in an extremely subtle political jab amid the wacky slapstick and almost obsessive attention to detail. It's a bit silly, but it's also great fun.

After being shot by an errant bullet, Bazil (Boon) becomes homeless. Taken in by the Micmacs, seven misfits living in a secret lair under a rubbish heap, he discovers that rival Parisian arms dealers manufactured the bullet that hit him and the landmine that killed his father when he was a child. As he plots his revenge, his new friends all want in on the plan, so they set about inventively using their salvage to get the company owners (Dussollier and Marie) to square off against each other.

Tous Les Matins Du Monde Review

Extraordinary
All the Mornings of the World (the translated title here) is not about a) mornings or b) the world. It is about music, and many feel it to be one of the better films about that nebulous, ephemeral subject.

Specifically, Mornings is the story of two composers, Sainte Colombe (Jean-Pierre Marielle) and his protege, Marin Marais (played by Gérard Depardieu as an older man and by his son Guillaume Depardieu for the bulk of the film). Sainte Colombe quickly earns a reputation as a master musician -- adding a seventh string to the viol, for example -- but his shunning of the king even more quickly earns him a place in rural exile. As Colobe's wife has died, he's dedicated himself to his hermitage, and more importantly his music.

La Petite Lili Review

Good
Claude Miller isn't the only guy who's drooled over Ludivine Sagnier's nude body, but he's the first to title his movie after her character.

In this adaptation of Chekhov's The Seagull, Sagnier gets fourth billing, yet the title would indicate she's center stage. Well, in a way, she is. Without her zombified, dazed expression and bimbo haircut, Sagnier provides the sexual energy that makes this story work at all: She's the central cog in a love quadrangle, which involves an aging actress, her old director of a beau, a young upstart director, and of course, Lili. The older couple and the younger couple drift apart because of the old man's wandering eye -- and who can blame him? And Lili sees a career boost in the old man, whereas the young director (Robinson Stévenin) is still working through his experimental -- and awful -- phase of filmmaking.
