Timbaland recently revealed the pair's relationship hit a rocky patch which meant he missed the 99 Problems hitmaker's 40th birthday in 2009, and Jay Z has now explained they drifted apart after experiencing problems in the studio.
The hip-hop icon tells Britain's BBC Radio 1, "He was still on Blueprint 3, the fall-out was at the end of that record, it happened at the end of that album... the way a couple of songs were getting leaked, that were his songs (sic) and that whole thing just ruined the whole process. I wanted him and Kanye (West) to produce (the album) and Kanye, who was the executive producer of Blueprint 3, was like, 'Yo, let's get Tim!' We were all inviting to him and he just wasn't accepting of the process. It seemed like it was more about him than the actual album. When you make an album, you've got to put all ego aside for the sake of the project and he wasn't accepting of that... and that was almost like the last straw... We just went our separate ways... "
The pair eventually reunited and Jay Z invited him to help produce his latest work Magna Carta Holy Grail.
He adds, "He came back and I saw a new Timbaland, he had this maturity and growth, and I was like, 'Oh, ok. This is going to work out.'"
