Jay Leno took it upon himself to joke about the controversial Casey Anthony verdict during his talk show on Tuesday (5th June 2011) but his remarks were met by virtual silence from the Tonight Show audience. The lack of response led Leno to assume there was a technical glitch with his microphone.
During the opening of his popular show, the host began by joking about the American heat-wave, saying, "It was so hot today, people were as delirious and incoherent as a Florida jury". Casey Anthony was acquitted of murdering her 2-year-old child just hours before the broadcast. Although the initial joke received applause, the host attempted to follow it by remarking, "This [verdict] means President Obama's economic team is only the second most clueless group of people in America". The joke was met by silence from the audience, prompting a dumfounded Leno to turn to his band and say, "Is the mic off? I don't think they heard the joke". He then repeated the Obama line before saying, "I don't get it.", adding, "Apparently, the OJ jury was tired and they moved to Florida"
Jay Leno hit the headlines this week after bosses at Comedy Central claimed their host Jon Stewart beat the talk-show veteran in the ratings for the second quarter that ended on 26th June 2011. It is claimed that Stewart's 'Daily Show' edged Leno's 'Tonight Show' in the 18-49 demographic.
