Freedom Song Review

OK
Long and annoying have been the boasts of TNT of its status as "the best movie studio on television." With that celebrity narrator whose voice you know by heart and whose name always escapes you, TNT's advertisements for its latest western directed by Bill Pullman, or, in this case, Gandhi-rip off starring Danny Glover pop up right in the middle of the TV edit for an old movie that you could probably go without seeing and normally cause people like me to switch to the upper-channel echelon of HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, and The Movie Channel... where I don't have to bother about hearing from some moron boasting that their station produces really good "made-for-TV" movies as if this was something to be proud about.

Having finally caved in and sampled TNT, having sampled HBO on a fairly regular basis, I can now say without a doubt that not only is TNT not the best movie studio on television... it is by far one of the worst. With large payments towards directors who do not demonstrate fair ability, TNT seems to reward the kind of schlock-TV that has made "TV-movie" into a status symbol in the film industry.

Drumline Review

OK
I've always thought of marching bandmembers as just a bunch of geeks who walk about, stroking their instruments while swapping stories from band camp. I feared Drumline would be two hours of these musician wannabes screeching out simple notes on their secondhand instruments. To my surprise, Drumline is not just another recital from band camp; however, it's no symphony either.

The film centers around Devon (Nick Cannon), a freshman recruited to attend Atlanta A&T University on a full ride scholarship to play in the school's marching band. He's an overachiever with a chip on his shoulder who thinks he knows everything about playing the drums. At tryouts, which look more like boot camp, Devon disrespects his band director Dr. Aaron Lee (Orlando Jones) by refusing to participate with the rest of the group. A power struggle soon ensues between Devon and his drumline section leader Sean (Leonard Roberts) who feels the freshman's talent threatens his position at the top of the food chain.

The Ladykillers Review

Weak

The Coen Brothers flopped with last year's comedically clumsy and questionably hammy "Intolerable Cruelty," and now that they have repeated and amplified the same arched-performance mistakes in "The Ladykillers," I am beginning to understand what it is about Joel and Ethan's movies that their detractors dislike so much.

The characters in the Coens' recent comedies have frequently been oblivious to the world beyond their whimsical capers, and in these last two pictures even the protagonists have become objects for audience ridicule, making them poor surrogates for getting us involved in their stories.

Tom Hanks takes that bullet in this loose remake of a 1955 British laffer about a band of crooks inadvertently foiled by the little old landlady who rents them a room. All toothy, affected mannerisms and blabbering balderdash as the endlessly loquacious supposed mastermind of the criminal enterprise, his character is nothing but caricature -- an over-educated, old-fashioned, pocket-watch-and-hankie type Southern gentleman who goes by the tongue-tying moniker of Professor Goldthwait Higginson Dorr, Ph.D.
