'Angry Birds' movie is getting underway in the coming months, and is set for release in July 2016.
The upcoming Angry Birds movie looks to have a strong ‘Saturday Night Live’ connection as a number of stars set to provide voiceovers were revealed.
Sudeikis has landed the lead voice role in the upcoming movie adaptation of 'Angry Birds'
'SNL'’s Jason Sudeikis will receive top billing by voicing Red, the instantly recognisable face of the Angry Birds brand. Former co-stars of his will play supporting roles, including Bill Hader as a pig and Maya Rudolph as Matilda. ‘Game of Thrones’s Peter Dinklage will play the Mighty Eagle, which some will see as ticklingly appropriate, while Josh Gad will voice Chuck and Danny McBride will feature as the exploding bomb.
Sony Pictures, the studio in charge of the new movie, revealed the news by way of a visual teaser through the franchise’s enormously popular app, which has over 2.5 billion subscribers worldwide. The studio’s president of theatrical marketing Dwight Caines said in a statement that Angry Birds “is one of those brands that can drive massive fan engagement. That’s why we wanted to bring this unlock to the fans first." The teaser was unlocked once 1 billion slingshots had been achieved collectively worldwide.
For those of us getting the distinct whiff of ‘lame and poorly conceived tie-in’, the project’s storyline is seemingly in good hands at least, with a script written by ‘The Simpsons’ Jon Vitti being brought to life by well-known storyboard artists Fergal Reilly (whose past work includes Spider-Man 2) and Clay Kaytis (Frozen).
Sudeikis was hired as a script writer for 'SNL' back in 2002, quickly graduating to regular cast member in 2005 before branching out into movie acting, starring in comedies such as Horrible Bosses and We’re The Millers.
Angry Birds is currently scheduled for release on July 1st, 2016.
