Tragic rocker Janis Joplin's family has given the go-ahead for a new reality TV project to find the late singer's soundalike.

The US show, SEARCH FOR THE PEARL, will feature a nationwide talent search for someone who embodies the spirit of the 1960s rocker.

The winner of the programme, which is expected to air next year (06), will join Joplin's former backing bands Big Brother + THE HOLDING COMPANY and FULL TILT BOOGIE BAND on a world tour.

The news of the new show comes during a resurgence of interest in Joplin - she'll be honoured at the Grammy Awards on Sunday (13FEB05) with a tribute duet, performed by Joss Stone and Melissa Etheridge, and a Lifetime Achievement award.

Meanwhile, Pink will star as Joplin in a new TV biopic, THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO JANIS, and Renee Zellweger is in negotiations to play the rocker in a new movie version of her life.
