The Bollywood take on JANE AUSTEN's classic novel Pride And Prejudice has shot to the top of the British movie charts.

BRIDE AND PREJUDICE - starring Indian beauty Aishwarya Rai and Hollywood actor MARTIN HENDERSON - grossed nearly $3 million (GBP1.7 million) in its first three days on release to overtake former number one Wimbledon.

The $18 million (GBP10 million) film from Bend It Like Beckham director Gurinder Chadha tells the tale of a lower middle-class family's attempt to marry off their daughter to a man from a higher social standing.

Other new releases - action sequel Resident Evil: APOCALYPSE and DENZEL WASHINGTON's latest offering MAN ON FIRE - entered the chart at fourth and sixth respectively.
