How To Make An American Quilt Review

Bad
I am dumbfounded about where to begin writing about this experiment-in-filmmaking-gone-terribly-wrong, How To Make an American Quilt. Some of the best actresses working in film (Anne Bancroft, Ellen Burstyn, Winona Ryder, Jean Simmons, Lois Smith, Samantha Mathis, and Claire Danes, to name a few) appear in this movie. And I can't begin to imagine how such a wide array of talents agreed to appear in such a dreadful picture.

Ryder plays the cheeky Finn, a precocious grad student pondering a marriage proposal. Having second thoughts, she decides to spend the summer with a gaggle of quilting relatives and their friends, just to sort things out. Well, we see right off the bat that this probably wasn't such a great idea, because each and every one of these people is completely insane.

The Positively True Adventures Of The Alleged Texas Cheerleader-Murdering Mom Review

Good
Hokey and jokey, this is a very faithful examination of an early 1990s case in Houston, Texas wherein an overagressive mother tried to ensure her daughter would make the cheerleading squad by hiring a hitman to kill one of the other girls and that girl's mother. Ultimately, the story is played for camp, which mostly works (thank God it's not one of those Amy Fisher movies!) on the back of Holly Hunter's titular big-haired mom. Shot mostly at the actual locations where the deeds were done, the movie gets its real kick when it comes time for everyone to sell their rights to Hollywood... with one writer remarking she has "Holly Hunter" in mind for the lead.

The Prize Winner Of Defiance, Ohio Review

Very Good
Someone should tell Julianne Moore that this isn't how box office careers are made. If you want to play the same character over and over, have it be a model the multiplex masses can warm up to. Vince Vaughn has taken the smartass route; Ben Stiller the imbecile track. Who's going to connect with 1950s housewives? Not the key demographics, certainly.

At the same time, when Moore gives as brilliant performance as she does in The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio, who should stop her? Moore is in every scene in this true, against-all-odds story about a woman whose penchant for winning contests keeps her family financially afloat. The teary story combined with Moore's constant presence could lead to self-indulgent tedium. It doesn't for one simple reason: Julianne Moore becomes Evelyn Ryan, not the other way around.
