Layer Cake Review

Excellent
Matthew Vaughan, producer behind the entire Guy Ritchie oeuvre (Lock, Stock, & Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch, and... er... Swept Away), makes his directorial debut with Layer Cake, another tale from the British criminal underworld that thankfully avoids any association with aging pop icons. Instead, Vaughan opts to take some of the elements of Ritchie's earlier work - colorful deviants, dark humor, Seinfeld-esque coincidence - and give them his own, slightly more somber spin. The result is an engaging 104 minutes that stakes its own claim on the genre.

Daniel Craig is credited as "XXXX" (oh, if only he were the new "XXX"), a "businessman," as he puts it, whose name we never learn. His business just happens to be cocaine. He plays by a strict set of rules - pay connections on time; keep a low profile, etc. And, like every other lowlife with whom we're supposed to sympathize in a gangster film, he's just about to retire. Until his boss, Jimmy Price (Kenneth Cranham) throws him two curveballs that shoot his plans all to hell.

Nil By Mouth Review

Terrible
Categorically one of the worst films ever made, Gary Oldman's meditation on gritty urban drug-abusing/wife-beating life is never poignant or impressive, unless you consider jerky camerawork a sign of genius. The violence, foul language, and drug use all serve no purpose except to generate more violence, foul language, and drug use -- and that hardly merits a film. It just goes to show that if you get famous enough, you can do whatever you want. I just didn't know Oldman was this famous.

Saving Grace Review

OK

Grace (Brenda Blethyn) is a middle-aged English housewife whose husband has jumped out of a plane without a parachute, leaving her with a messy legacy of massive debt. Her beloved but modest estate in the friendly little hamlet she calls home is about to be foreclosed, and she just doesn't know how she's going to sustain herself.

She hocks her wedding ring and lets repo men take her riding lawn mower, but she's fast running out of options. That is, until her pot-head gardener Michael (Craig Ferguson) suggests they teach themselves a little DIY hydroponics and transplant his marijuana plants -- currently hidden under a tree at a local vicarage -- into her big, empty greenhouse where they can grow faster and become a source of income.

A choice little comedy with an enthusiastic spirit, "Saving Grace" gets a lot of mileage out of the paradoxical image of an adorable granny type lending her green thumb to the cannabis trade. And Blethyn ("Little Voice," "Secrets & Lies") couldn't be more ideal in the role, playing it at once na?ve and determined. "I'm becoming a drugs dealer!" she giggles effervescently.
