TBS has announced plans for a 16-part stand-alone series of 'Drop the Mic', with Corden as an executive producer.
James Corden is continuing his relentless conquering of American television with the announcement of a third show, with TBS revealing a new stand-alone series of Corden’s popular celebrity rap battle segment ‘Drop the Mic’.
The network announced on Thursday (August 11th) that it was developing a 16-part series of ‘Drop the Mic’, the popular sketch developed by Corden and his producer Ben Winston, that will debut in early 2017. Corden and Winston will both feature as executive producers for the new series.

It is ‘The Late Late Show’ host’s second stand-alone idea that he has successfully managed to sell off the back of his popular late night chat show, after he franchised the even more popular ‘Carpool Karaoke’ to Apple Music earlier this summer.
For those unfamiliar with ‘Drop the Mic’, it sees British star Corden exchanged rap disses and light-hearted banter with a celebrity in the form of an old-school rap battle. This model is being adapted slightly for TBS’ stand-alone version, which will see four celebrities pitted against each other per episode, with a studio audience determining the winner.

“James Corden and Ben Winston have struck a nerve with their celebrity-driven, music-infused, incredibly fun content,” said Michael Bloom, TBS’s senior vice-president for unscripted programming, in a press release.
“This series embodies the kind of unique and surprising programming we are looking for as we reinvent our approach to this genre within the new TBS brand.”
Corden’s stint on ‘The Late Late Show’, which began in March 2015, has proven to be popular more for its spin-off sketches like ‘Drop the Mic’ and ‘Carpool Karaoke’, which regularly rack up millions of YouTube hits in their own right, rather than the show itself, which often lags behind in the ratings to similar shows on at the same time on different networks.
