One of China's leading film directors, Zhang Yimou ( Red Sorghum, Raise the Red Lantern, Hero ), has told China's national parliament that the country's film industry lags far behind the U.S. and needs to move in new directions. "Innovation is much needed to develop the Chinese film industry," Zhang, quoted by ChinaOrg.com, said in Beijing. He proposed that the country cultivate versatility in the arts in order to achieve the mixture of visual artistry and technology that James Cameron achieved with Avatar . "Chinese films should learn to use more creative and high-tech means to enrich the stories, like Avatar ," Zhang said. He also called on the Chinese lawmakers to build a 3D film lab so that China could begin producing its own 3D movies. "I hope the young generation of directors will not follow the old ways of making feature films," Zhang said.
