Collins made her name as one of James Brown's backing singers, and earned the nickname "Female Preacher" for her wailing vocals.

Her voice was also sampled on ROB BASE and Dj E-Z Rock's 1988 hit hip-hop hit IT TAKES TWO and has since been used by Ludacris.

Collins was visiting family and friends California when she fell ill last week (ends11MAR05). She was due to embark on a tour next month (APR05).

The singer was forced to limit her touring in recent years because of rheumatoid arthritis.
