James Brown is already suffering the fallout from his arrest for assaulting his wife last week (28JAN04) - plans to honour the funk superstar have been put on hold.

Arrangements to rename the annual music festival and erect a statue in Brown's honour in Augusta, Georgia - where the singer grew up - are now frozen until the case against him has been concluded.

Mayor BOB YOUNG explains, "This certainly is not anything anybody could have planned for. It's extremely unsettling and disturbing, but we will have to wait and see how this plays itself out."

Brown denies assault charges against fourth wife TOMMIE RAE HYNIE following an incident at their South Carolina home on Wednesday.
