Like a mash-up of Alien and Gravity, this ripping sci-fi horror movie is very effective at generating tension and terror. And it helps that an adept cast is on board to give some weight to characters who are rather thinly written. The script, by Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, keeps everything lean and mean, concentrating on the scary stuff while ignoring any thematic depth or topicality. But director Daniel Espinosa (Safe House) keeps it moving briskly.
It's set on board the International Space Station, where a specialised six-person crew is examining new soil samples from Mars. Science officer Hugh (Ariyon Bakare) finds alien life in the dirt, and watches in amazement as the cells grow and cooperate to create an interactive jellyfish-like creature, which schoolchildren on Earth name Calvin. Infectious disease doctors David and Miranda (Jake Gyllenhaal and Rebecca Ferguson) are concerned that this life-form remains contained in the lab. So Captain Kat (Olga Dihovichnaya) and technicians Roy and Sho (Ryan Reynolds and Hiroyuki Sanada) set out to lock things down. But of course, this proves trickier than they thought it would be.
What follows is, unsurprisingly, a stalker slasher movie in which the crew members go down one by one. Calvin is a quick learner, and grows into a seriously menacing creature, complete with the silly addition of a kind of evil digital face. It also gets a few corny point of view camera angles. But mainly Espinosa holds his nerve, maintaining a believable sense of the science and the setting as things get increasingly out of control. Each terrifying set piece is followed by a brief moment of silence in which the characters (and audience) catch their breath. This also allows them to add one back story detail per person, in an attempt to stir up some emotional connection. But it doesn't really matter once the violent mayhem kicks into gear again.

On board the International Space Station, a group of astronauts and scientists are risking their lives in order to study various outer worldly scenarios. When the team are sent a pod by an exploration vessel based on a planet Mars, the delivery process is risky but the skilled engineers manage to intercept the pod with little issue.
As the team re-group and begin to investigate the findings of the mission, not one of the crew members expects what has been delivered to them. The team of six unbelievably find that the Mars rover has found a form of life. A primitive large single cell; without expecting to, the team appear to have just proven that life on other planets is possible and they're the first ones to see exactly what it is.
Lead by a British scientist, the team quarantine the sample and begin to culture and nurture it in a bid to discover what the cell is part of. Everyone on the Space Station is overwhelmed and equally intrigued by the discovery and the secrets it holds but as they soon realise, the lifeform is far more dangerous than any of them could ever comprehended and it soon wishes to take over its new host.

For a short time, Edward and Susan had a happy marriage, they lived in a nice neighbourhood, Susan had a good career and Edward was not far from taking the bar. Susan lives a fast-paced life and as such barely sleeps and Edward would somewhat affectionately tell her that she's a 'nocturnal animal'.
25 years later, Susan has remarried a serial philanderer and her life is far from happy. Unexpectedly a manuscript arrives at her door titled 'Nocturnal Animals' and with the dedication to 'Susan'. She pushes the pages aside and decides to leave them but eventually she can't help but start to read the book that she inspired Edward to write.
The story that unfolds is an incredibly dark tale of murder and revenge and Susan is shocked and traumatised that she would play such a pivotal role in the creation of such a dark piece of work. Susan's interpretation and retelling of the story soon impacts on her life and is unsure how Edward's return into her life will turn out.

Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain have officially singed on for the big screen adaptation of Tom Clancy video game The Division, developers Ubisoft announced on Tuesday. The game, which shelves back in March, was an instant hit for Ubisoft, achieving a record number of first day sales for the company.
Jake Gyllenhaal will star opposite Jessica Chastain in The Division.
Gyllenhaal will also be producing the adaptation, which centers on the aftermath of a small pox pandemic in dystopian New York. In the video game players must attempt to rebuild the city while fighting and investigating crime.

Jake Gyllenhaal has been revealed as the star of a forthcoming movie adaptation of the record-breaking video game ‘Tom Clancy’s The Division’, continuing Hollywood’s newly-discovered enthusiasm for turning home entertainment games into cinema blockbusters.
According to a report in Variety, the 35 year old actor will also be a producer on the project. It will be his second role in a video game adaptation after 2010’s Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, which it technically the most successful such adaptation in worldwide movie history despite the critical slaughtering it received upon release.

With its darkly emotive themes and brittle humour, this well-made drama by Jean-Marc Vallee (Dallas Buyers Club) isn't quite what it appears to be. It's not, for example, an exploration of grief, although that's in here. And it also isn't meant to be taken literally, because it's more of a parable. The main clue is in the moment when the central character comments that everything in his life seems to be a metaphor. Indeed it is. And this heightened sense of meaning makes the entire film unusually vivid.
The film opens as Wall Street banker Davis (Jake Gyllenhaal) emerges unscratched from a car crash that kills his beautiful wife Julia (Heather Lind). Unable to grieve, he begins to feel like the world around him is shifting inexplicably. So he starts taking things apart to see how they work, or why they don't. Soon he's dismantling his entire house. His father-in-law Phil (Chris Cooper), who is also his boss, becomes increasingly perplexed at Davis' erratic behaviour. And the only person Davis confides in is customer services rep Karen (Naomi Watts) and her confused 15-year-old son Chris (Judah Lewis). As Davis worms his way into their world, he slowly begins to see his own life more clearly.
This is a film about how some people let themselves drift along in the expected ways, never questioning what happens even though it doesn't feel quite right. In Davis' case, his wife's death jolts him awake. He begins to see the real world around him for the first time, including the absurdities of the life he had built around himself. Gyllenhaal invests Davis with remarkable layers of emotion as a generally cheerful guy being pulled apart from within by something he initially can't understand. His reactions to people around him grow increasingly more honest as the film progresses. And by the end, he's defying expectations and conventions in ways that feel shocking but are actually bracingly truthful.

Jake Gyllenhaal looked forward to working with costar Naomi Watts and director Jean-Marc Vallee (Dallas Buyers Club), mainly because the filmmaker is notable for encouraging his cast members to improvise. But Gyllenaal says he was taken aback when Vallee told him not to prepare for the role. "Weeks before, I was like, 'When are we going to rehearse it?'" Gyllenhaal says. "And he was like, 'No, we can talk about it on set.' He really pushed me out of my comfort zone, this technique and this style that I've developed over a long period of time. I showed up pretty scared the first day, because I hadn't done any preparation. But it wasn't manipulation, because he was always with me."

And Gyllenhaal really enjoyed Vallee's stripped-back stye of filmmaking. "I had heard and read about his process," he says, "and how he films his movies and how he treats his actors and just his whole way of circumventing the Hollywood vanity style of filmmaking. It can't be denied that Jake Gyllenhaal is a superb actor with a versatile talent that allows him to play virtually any character out there. However, that doesn't seem to have been enough to save his latest flick 'Demolition', which has left most critics deeply unimpressed.

Gyllenhaal is making some questionable choices when it comes to cinema these days. Two other films from 2015 that he starred in, 'Southpaw' and 'Accidental Love', were equally unengaging as his latest endeavour, but he's got a lot in the pipeline so we're not losing hope yet. His latest film, about a businessman who becomes emotionally sparse after the death of his wife and sets out to take various objects apart and destroy his home, has been branded as 'all metaphor and no movie' by NJ.com, with Indiewire adding it's 'a frivolous lark, riddled with manufactured breakthroughs'.

Big Hero 6 is being hailed as a gamechanger for Disney.
With Marvel making a play for the kids’ animated movie market, there’s finally some variety at the box office this weekend. The studio’s Disney-esque hero adventure, Big Hero 6 takes plays in San Fransokyo (that’s a future hybrid between San Francisco and Tokyo, in case you’ve missed the subtle wordplay) and centres on Hiro Takadashi.
Big Hero 6 couldn't quite match Interstellar at the box office, but is getting a round of critical praise.

Halloween weekend was a scary time indeed – especially for the movie industry, which saw record low figures over the three-day period. Maybe it was the fact that Halloween fell on a Friday this year, or maybe people just aren’t as easily swayed to go see a movie anymore. The only lead is an RV that was parked on the street hours before she went missing. Detective Loki (Gyllenhaal) arrests its driver, Alex Jones (Paul Dano) but can’t keep him in custody due to a lack of evidence.

Jackman plays Keller Dover, whose six-year-old daughter Anna goes missing with her young friend Joy. Panic sets in and the whole neighbourhood sets out looking for the pair, with the only lead a dilapidated RV that was spotted on the street minutes before the apparent abduction.
The weekend saw "Prisoners" effortlessly swim past "Battle of the Year" at the box office.
“Battle of the Year,” a 3-D dance movie starring Chris Brown, got beaten in the box office charts by an action flick starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal? Pardon us, while we go look for the “You don’t say!” t-shirts. “Prisoners” came out of the weekend as the undisputed box office champion, largely due to the combined star power of Jackman and Gyllenhaal, but also to the fact that in the third week of the fall season, there was hardly anything better on offer, won “Prisoners” an easy victory with a $21.4 million opening weekend while “Battle” trailed all the way at the bottom with a measly $5 million.
What could have gone wrong?
So how exactly did "Battle" manage to do so poorly? Yes, the budget may have been tight – just $20 million – but a dance film doesn’t really require complex CGI or sweeping landscapes to work. And we have, of course known plenty of dance movies to become instant cult hits ("Step Up", "Bring It On") or even live on in cinema history ("Dirty Dancing".) Add to that Brown’s $13 million Twitter followers (aka an easily accessible market segment) and there seems to be no possible explanation for the movie barely cracking the top five in an already barren film landscape. Except maybe… it wasn’t all that good?

Prisoners successful rode the wave of critical acclaim thrust it's way to emerge as the top performing movie at the box office this weekend. Taking in £21.4 million between Friday and Sunday, the film easily beat it's closest rival, the horror sequel Insidious 2, to the top spot, in what was one of the slowest weekends at the movies all year.
The Warner Bros. action-drama opened across 3,260 locations this weekend, and off the back of strong critical reception and with little else on offer, the film was always front-runner for the box office crown. With a strong cast led by Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal, the films see's father Keller Dover (Jackman) as his world is torn apart when his six-year-old daughter and her friend go missing at Thanksgiving. When Detective Loki (Gyllenhaal) is called in to find the girls, he makes a promise to Keller that he will see his daughter again. The case looks solved when the RV-dwelling loner Alex Jones (Paul Dano) is found at the scene and immediately becomes the prime suspect. But with only a 48 hour hold on him, the police are unable to make Jones talk in time before he can be re-released. Enraged, Keller decides to take matters into his own hands and it is soon up to Loki to get to the bottom of the case before it's too late for the missing girls, and too late for Keller and Jones.

Prisoners is due to be released tomorrow (20th September) but early reviews indicate it's likely to be a success at the Box Office. Claudia Puig of USA Today describes Prisoners as "an intricate, horrifying mystery with breath-taking skill." She also comments on the issues the film raises, specifically "the complicated moral questions about how far an anguished person will go for the love of a child."

Despite feverish internet rumors that Ryan Gosling will become the next Batman, it looks like it won't happen.
Ever since Zack Snyder announced a Superman/Batman film in the works at last weekend's Comic-Con, the internet has exploded with rumors; few of which have been about the movie and more about who should replace Christian Bale as Batman in the Man of Steel sequel.
Ryan Gosling's was a name that surfaced quickly and it's easy to see why: Gosling has great stage presence and, as we saw in Drive, the ability to flip from calm to guns blazing in mere seconds. What Culture say that the 32 year-old "perfectly fits this more brutal and tortured Batman, not to mention that he possesses the suave playboy looks to serve as the cover story." So it's a shame really that it's not going to be Ryan.

Yes indeed, there are many things in the video that are red - Taylor's lips, her guitar, and the pieces of cloth that her cavorting dancers are waving around. If summer is the season of big budget superhero flicks, then fall is when Hollywood unleashes the gritty, “realistic” action movies – case in point: the new trailer for Prisoners. The Hugh Jackman starrer will center on a father, whose daughter gets kidnapped and who turns to detective Loki (no relation to the Marvel villain,) played by Jake Gyllenhaal. There’s also the creepy suspect, played by Paul Dano, Unfortunately, Loki doesn’t have any evidence to take him down, forcing Jackman’s character to take matters into his own hands. Isn’t that how it always goes?

Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal in one movie? Yes, please. The trailer for Prisoners, which unites the two actors in a crime thriller about a Boston carpenter (Jackman) who joins forces with a young detective (Gyllenhaal) after his daughter is kidnapped.
The film also sees Jackman’s character then go on to kidnap the person (Paul Dano) who he thinks is behind the disappearance, and the consequences he faces thanks to his own abduction.
In terms of plot, the film sounds pretty much like Taken with a slight touch of bromance, but the trailer is pretty gripping – what with the somber tones and minimal soundtrack. It’s obvious that director Dennis Vilenueve, whose film Incendies was Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2011, knows his stuff. Could be very, very good (we hope at least - then again, it could just be a watered down version of Taken). If you’re on the fence about it too, the trailer below might help you decide whether this one is worth seeing.

According to Variety the British actress and the two American actors are in advanced talks with Disney to take on a starring roles in the upcoming movie, which is being directed by Rob Marshall.
The film is based on the 1987 Stephen Sondheim fantasy Broadway musical of the same name, which revolves around a childless baker and his wife as they attempt to lift a family curse by going into the enchanted woods to confront the witch that first cast the spell on them.

Say what? That seems a bit puzzling, considering that Taytay has been giving gossip websites a stable supply of material in the past couple of years, from dating Jake Gyllenhall a few years back, through to John Mayer and her most recent fling with One Direction’s resident Don Juan, Harry Styles. Not to mention the fact that, after dating them, Swift has developed a habit of immortalizing the relationships in songs – usually ones that end up near the top of the Billboard chart. Katie Holmes and Jake Gyllenhaal dating? Not according to Gossip Cop. The Metro may have reported that the two actors had started up a romance (based on a story from Grazia) but a representative for Katie Holmes has reportedly told the folk over at Gossip Cop that it simply isn’t true. For a fleeting moment, it looked as though the Donnie Darko star and the woman who recently escaped her marriage to Tom Cruise and got a speedy divorce could be the hottest new Hollywood couple. It’s “not at all true” though, apparently, according to the rep. And a source that knows Gyllenhaal also dismissed the idea, saying that it’s a “complete fabrication.”
Supposedly, Katie and Jake were introduced by Katie’s former Dawson’s Creek star Joshua Jackson . It’s been reported that Jake went to see Katie in her Broadway play Dead Accounts and that she’s been to his place for dinner. Taylor Swift's 'I Knew You Were Trouble' video is based on real life experiences, the country-pop superstar has revealed. The new single is based on one of the singer's past relationships and the video tells the story of a girl getting sucked into a relationship while losing her true identity in the process.
"I had just gone through an experience that made me write this song about like knowing the second you see someone, 'Oh this is going to be interesting. It's going to be dangerous, but look at me going in there anyway', she told MTV News. Hmmm, so who could the song and video be about? Her current squeeze Harry Styles is too recent, while Joe Jonas doesn't really fit the 'dangerous' tag. Taylor Lautner is hardly a bad boy, so that leaves blues musician John Mayer, Jake Gyllenhaal and Conor Kennedy. Swift explained, "My favourite thing [about the video] is that this girl not only gets sucked into this relationship with him but she loses who she was before and that's the saddest part of losing him, is that she can't remember who she was before she met him." Things seemed to be going swimmingly for Swift and Kennedy, while her relationship with Gyllenhaal was surely too brief to really 'change' her. It's got to be Mayer, right?

Postmodern life has deigned that we receive the world through a media lens. Very little of what we encounter do we take at face value, rather everything is realised and equated with what we've seen on a screen. For those of us outside Hurricane Sandy it's difficult to understand the scale nor the emotion that must be present, but as the Sun has reported it's like "[waking] up in a disaster movie". This is nothing new because "When you live in New York, it feels like you're constantly on a film set," as the Annette Witherage further stated.
Sandy has already been related to one disaster movie - The Day After Tomorrow which starred Jake Gyllenhaal as Dennis Quaid. A still from the film has already been exploited. The image was of the Statue of Liberty engulfed in waves; it sent its own waves of fear regarding the immense power of the storm, but it was later realised to be a hoax. The LA Times has also likened it to Life of Pi, which follows a boy stranded on a raft in the ocean when an enormous storm hits. Sandy has been touted as the disaster that tweeted, as accounts of the event is being circulated via the social networking site quicker than anywhere else. Sandy was never going to be able to keep out of the spotlight and as the disaster hits one of the most iconic cities of the world, let alone just America, the movie potential will also be something of a talking point in Hollywood. Flight 93 and United 93 are two movies that were made about the events as they transpired on 9/11, and this year has seen the release of one of the first Hurricane Katrina movies, Beasts of the Southern Wild.
With a reported 48 people's lives claimed by Sandy, a film with even a fraction of the beauty and tenderness present in Beasts of the Southern Wild would be a beautiful tribute to the storm that has already stormed the media.
Remember when Taylor Swift joked with Ellen DeGeneres about how many failed relationships she's had, and remember how it was kind of OK because she was going pretty strong with Conor Kennedy? Well forget that, forget all of that, because the once inseparable couple has now split.
Yep, after an intense summer romance that reportedly saw Taylor buy a home near the Kennedy family compound, the pair have decided to go their own separate ways. US Weekly were first to report the news, though there has been no immediate comment from Swift's representative. At least now the We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together singer has plenty of material for her next album. We're kind of sceptical about the whole thing, remember, Swift has an album to promote Red which is billed as her latest 'heartbreak record' and it's likely to debut at No.1 on the Billboard 200 next week. A little breakup story isn't going to hurt now is it? If it is true though, Kennedy will be sent to the Taylor Swift scrapheap - a remote location where Jake Gyllenhaal, John Mayer, Garrett Hedlund, Joe Jonas and Lucas Till huddle together and describe their terrible experiences in love.
It all makes sense, really. Taylor has been working non-stop to promote Red in recent months, while Conor stepped out solo earlier this month at the premiere of the HBO documentary on his grandmother, Ethel.

America's Southern sweetheart, Taylor Swift, has released her fourth studio album entitled 'Red'. She has sold over 22 million records, won countless awards (including 5 Grammys), been praised by all walks of life for her musical talent, her generosity of spirit, her philanthropic work, and her work and influence in the promotion of education, inclusion and of non-prejudicial cultures of thought. Pretty good for a 22 year old, eh?
This new album lives up to our expectations and to her character. ABC News reports that she thinks of it as her "most adventurous album yet", saying: "I got to explore the edges of what I'm allowed to do." The general theme behind the majority of the album is what she has always sung about: relationships, romance and heartbreak. But she says that's what she enjoys most: "I really tend to draw inspiration from my life and from the characters in my life.... for me [it's] something I've always loved doing, watching life play out and kind of making a song out of that."
No doubt, just like her entire back catalogue of music, we'll all be speculating on who each song is about. She admits to the New York Daily News that the album is "really kind of diary entries of the last two years of [her] life", so indeed the themes and feeling of her music aren't plucked out of thin air. Given Swift's wide array of high profile romantic involvement, we can't help but question whether they're about Jake Gyllenhaal, Taylor Lautner, Joe Jonas, John Mayer, or even current beau Conor Kennedy. However, although this kind of gossip is inevitable, let's hope that the majority of publicity for this bright star will focus on her aforementioned work and talent, so we may encourage her to continue being the fantastic role model that she is.

Swift refused to confirm that the lyrics of the song were written about Mayer, though they do seem to closely follow the pattern of their relationship, with the lines “Dear John, I see it all now that you’re gone / Don’t you think I was too young to be messed with?” The singer wasn’t drawn into detail though; "I don’t talk about my personal life in great detail," Swift asserted whilst talking to Glamour. "I write about it in my songs, and I feel like you can share enough about your life in your music to let people know what you're going through." She also added that she’d never read what Mayer said about her, and that he had no plans to. "It's not that I'm this egomaniac and I don’t want to hear anything negative, because I do keep myself in check. But I've never developed that thick a skin. So I just kind of live a life, and I let all the gossip live somewhere else. If you go too far down the rabbit hole of what people think about you, it can change everything about who you are." Indeed, Taylor. Other ex-boyfriends should take note; we’re looking at you, Joe Jonas and Jake Gyllenhaal. Be careful.
One of the more cryptic Taylor Swift songs, We Are Never Getting Back Together, apart from being succinct in its title, has broken records for Swift, making her the most downloaded female artists in one week. Her forthcoming album, Red, is due for release on October 22nd, and will feature songs written by Ed Sheeran.
As the U.S. Box Office slumbers on into the autumn, the figures needed to top the charts are getting ever smaller. However, whilst that makes it largely a head-in-hands experience for many of the studios behind these movies, for those who enjoy waiting to see what the top five's looking like each Monday it's making for exciting watching as smaller figures mean smaller margins between films. Case in point was this weekend where the winner wasn't announced until today (September 24th), with the unfancied Jake Gyllenhaal-starring End Of Watch beating out the more fancied horror House At The End Of The Street and Clint Eastwood's film Trouble With The Curve.
End Of Watch was a victory for independent film studios too, with Open Road Films beating out Relatively Media and Warner Bros to top spot; they'll not care one jot that they took a meager $13.2 million. The other two films will be a little more concerned that they took only $12.2 million and $12.1 million respectively however.
Reflecting on his film's seemingly surprise victory, Open Road Films' Tom Ortenberg commented "We always knew we were going to outperform expectations, and I believe the film will have long legs."Looper, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis will be hoping to wake up the Box Office from the doldrums this coming weekend.
The North American Box office has faced a tough month, with figures now 20 per cent lower than they were last year. Clint Eastwood is just one of the big names that hit screens this weekend, so how did they all do?
Well Eastwood’s latest foray with Trouble With The Curve proved unsuccessful on its first weekend, currently sitting in third place based on the latest figures available. The baseball flick only managed $12,720,000, which pales in insignificance to the top two films, still vying for this weekend’s top spot. End Of Watch, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and House at the End of the Street are both currently locking horns on $13m, so either could come out top once the final figures are released. It was thought that Eastwood’s name alone could draw in the crowds to take it top, that and his infamous empty chair routine and recent publically stated political views, but it didn’t do the trick for the Western Star.
Elsewhere, comic book remake Dredd 3D couldn’t beat a re-release of Disney film, Finding Nemo, even if it was a 3D version of the lovably fishy tale. The futuristic sci-fi action flick only managed $6,300,000, which is a paltry return considering its high budget. The low ranking will represent troubling news for both Dredd 3D producers and film industry people in general, as cinema attendances are reaching worrying lows.
With some big titles being released this weekend, many would be forgiven for thinking it’ll be a successful few days for the North American Box Office, but all indications point to another disappointing haul for film studios.
Lionsgate's comic-book adaptation Dredd 3D will be unleashed off the back of some positive reviews, but given a summer of Marvel action, it’s unlikely that the Judge will pull in the audiences required to boost figures. Also released, and probably the most high profile release of the weekend is The Master, although the Paul Thomas Anderson Scientology drama was given a limited release in New York and Hollywood already. Perhaps the acting prowess of Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix will attract cinema goers, but indications aren’t good. Figures should total in the high-$90 millions through Sunday, which would be off from this time last year by as much as 20%, a bigger drop than any of the past three weekends.
Elsewhere, Clint Eastwood’s baseball flick Trouble With The Curve might gleam some extra attention due to the Western star’s infamous Empty Chair routine, and his other public political opinions. Then again, they might not. Relativity Media's thriller House at the End of the Street, End of Watch, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Emma Watson’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower round off this weekends big releases in cinema.
End Of Watch is out in U.S Cinemas today (September 21st) and Jake Gyllenhaal, who spent time with the real L.A.P.D to prepare for his role as Officer Bryan Taylor, has been talking about life as a cop on the streets of Los Angeles.
“Oh, it's a world of a difference. When you see a police officer on the street, there's a stigma, it's like a Batsuit. Even when you put it on, it feels that way,” he explained to ABC News. “When you see them, they project a whole lot of things out into the world just wearing that uniform.” Gyllenhall and co-star Michael Pena, who plays Officer Mike Zavala in the film, spent a great deal of time with the real police force to get a feel for the action. “After spending five months on the street with police officers, the sheriff's department, LAPD, two to three times a week doing ride-alongs from 4 in the afternoon to 5 in the morning, and then doing SWAT-type tactical training, after all these experiences, but particularly being on the street – [you realize] it's a tough job,” recalled Gyllenhaal.
Talking ahead of their glitzy Hollywood premier for the film, the boys seemed proud of their portrayal, with Pena particularly happy with its relevance: “We wanted to show something fresh, something that you don't necessarily see everyday. There's things that are in the news that they hear of, there's characters that they don't necessarily know, but they want to know. For me those were curiosities. Also, the way we shot it, lends itself to a more improvisational-looking style,” he explained.

According to Latino Fox News, the Desperate Housewives star managed to side-step any questions about her blossoming romance with Mark Sanchez. Those moments of intelligence are delivered mostly by the film's two stars, Jake Gyllenhall as the immuno-deficient Jimmy and Swoosie Kurtz as his over-protective, hyper religious, Reagan-loving mother. Gyllenhall's sweet-natured delivery of Jimmy's hilariously naïve narration serves as the backbone for an otherwise flimsy coming-of-age story: Jimmy is a Bubble Boy, a kid born without immunity who could die if he comes in contact with a single germ -- a plight explored more seriously in the John Travolta TV movie Boy in the Plastic Bubble and less so on Seinfeld.

While most movies would become lost in the complicated world of these spontaneous situations, Lovely & Amazing simply observes as the characters deal with thought-provoking issues involving relationships, health, age, romance, and work.

This Gen-X road trip has an interesting performance from the always-engaging Jared Leto, plus small and hilarious turns from the likes of Jeremy Piven, but overall this film is a nonsensical dud. Ostensibly, it's about a run to Seattle brought on when Leto's Jack gets caught in bed with a mobster's woman. Of course, the mobsters give chase.

Familiarity with Auburn's stage presentation may breed contempt for this version, which feels distinctly off-kilter from its first frames. Mysteries that held water longer in the theater instead land like Doc Marten's on a flimsy piece of plywood here. Director John Madden samples a chatty, analytical approach to his literal translation but gets swept up in stagy, awkward, and all-too-deliberate line readings. Much like last year's ill-conceived Phantom of the Opera, this movie has few cinematic qualities that elevate it above a tedious and emotionless play rehearsal shot on location.

With that said, Moonlight Mile is only half bad. Sure, it's weepy and sentimental and fails to take full advantage of an emotionally fertile premise. But as a story of loss, self-discovery and rebirth it succeeds as much as it fails. If this were baseball, Moonlight Mile would be batting .500, which is good. But this is the movies, so half bad means two and a half stars.

The Good Girl is as close as you can get to nothing and still have something to project on screen. So greatly lacking in life, interest, and imagination, it's amazing the film was ever made. The characters almost sleepwalk from scene to scene, deficient of spirit, energy, humor, and any will to live. Nobody in this movie has a decent future. Most of the characters look as if they'd happily dive head first from the nearest bridge.

Laughs may be unintentional, but they come at a fast and furious clip. A news chopper flies alongside multiple tornadoes marauding Los Angeles but remains airborne and unscathed. Survivors holed up inside of New York's public library are advised to "ride out" a pending ice age, which I thought typically lasted thousands of years. A Rhode Island-sized block of ice breaks off its glacial base, and the crack just happens to run through the middle of climatologist Jack Hall's (Dennis Quaid) Antarctic camp. And former Riptide star Perry King plays the President of the United States! C'mon people, that's funny.

Set in 1988, Donnie Darko is a John Hughes teen movie tinged with David Lynch-ian gloom and perversity. It begins innocently enough around the Darko's dining room table, where we find out the older sister (Maggie Gyllenhaal) is rebelliously voting for Dukakis and Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal, Bubble Boy) is off his meds. From here, the film churns forward at a hypnotic pace, revealing facts about its disturbed but endearing title character.

Although "October Sky" is a film with no surprises from its soundtrack of '50s rock 'n' roll standards to its triumph over adversity themes, this teen-years biography of a NASA scientist who got his start building rockets in his basement is so full of spirit and letter-perfect filmmaking that I defy anyone to watch this movie without getting a tingle in his or her heart.
Thrilling in the best sense of the word, traditional without being corny and with a script, photography and symbolism that could be the basis of a film literature textbook, "October Sky" is a classic in the making. It's just a pity it wasn't released in time for Oscar consideration.
The picture stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Homer Hickman, a coal miner's son determined to break away from his assumed destiny following in his father's bleak and dangerous subterranean footsteps.

Finding warmth, humor and uneasy comfort in the face of senseless tragedy, "Moonlight Mile" is a poignant movie about pain and loss that doesn't succumb to melodrama and cry-you-a-river, give-me-an-Oscar performances.
Described as "emotionally autobiographical" by writer-director Brad Silberling ("City of Angels") -- whose actress girlfriend was killed by a stalker in 1989 -- the film is about the apprehensive bond that forms between a young man and the parents of his fiancée, who is murdered in a diner just a few weeks before their wedding.
The story, which takes place in 1970s New England (gratuitous soundtrack warning), opens the morning of the funeral as fresh-from-college Joe Nast (Jake Gyllenhaal) wakes up in the childhood bedroom of his late bride-to-be and begins packing his suitcase. He's planned to leave that night, although he's not sure where he's going. But after the service, he spends the evening with her downhearted, acquiescent and ironic parents (Dustin Hoffman and Susan Sarandon), who have resolved simply to go on with life as planned -- just as soon as Sarandon, fed up with a day of public grieving, tosses into the fireplace all the silly self-help books ("These Things Happen," "Grieving for Grown-Ups") given to them by concerned friends trying awkwardly to help.

Great casting is absolutely vital to a puckishly impudent comedy like "Bubble Boy" -- the story of a happy-go-lucky, immune-deficient geek who zip-locks himself into a homemade portable orb to travel cross-country and stop the wedding of the girl he loves.
Put somebody like Adam Sandler, David Spade or Seth Green in the title role, and this childlike weirdo with matted hair and a whiney voice would lose all his sweet qualities and quickly become intolerably abrasive.
But Jake Gyllenhaal, who made such a lasting impression as future NASA scientist Homer Hickman in the little-seen coming of age picture "October Sky" -- is absolutely brilliant in the role. His exaggerated wide-eyed naivete has just enough pepper to make you laugh with him, not at him. His hyperactive enthusiasm at taking his first steps into the world ("Dog poo! Aweeeesome!") is so real that you don't just laugh, you smile. He makes the character three-dimensional and 100-percent lovable, but in an ever-so-slightly ironic way that requires a ton of talent to maintain.

In the 1996 modest and little-seen relationship comedy delight "Walking and Talking," writer-director Nicole Holofcener demonstrated a preternatural knack for capturing the bonds between women with her candid and vicarious style of emotion honesty and funny, true-to-life dialogue. But her second independent film, "Lovely and Amazing," fails to find the same spark as it eavesdrops on a family of gratingly neurotic and insecure women.
Sad-eyed Brenda Blethyn, a specialist at screwed-up moms ("Little Voice," "Secrets and Lies"), is the emotionally messy matriarch, who spends most of the movie in the hospital due to complications from liposuction surgery. Doped up on painkillers and more depressed than usual (in part because her flirtations with her plastic surgeon aren't getting anywhere), she still has complaints about her daughters at the ready.
"One's really f**ked up," she tells the doctor, "and the other one isn't married."

An honest, unsentimental, modest and well-crafted film from the writer-director team behind 2000's awkward stalker indie buzz flick "Chuck and Buck," "The Good Girl" is the melancholy allegory about a once ambitious small-town woman desperate to escape the malignant malaise of her monotonous life.
The ennui of years in discount-retail hell, the desperation of being tethered to a lay-about, stoner husband and the regret of never having realized, or even pursued, any of her dreams have piled up as emotional ballast in Justine's life. And the weight of it all is manifested viscerally by Jennifer Aniston in a pensive, title-role performance of effectively plodding, downcast body language.
When a sullen, taciturn 22-year-old named Tom (Jake Gyllenhaal) -- who calls himself Holden in honor of his juvenile fixation with "The Catcher in the Rye" -- takes a job at the Retail Rodeo, Justine thinks she recognizes a kindred spirit. "I saw in your eyes that you hate the world," she says by way of introduction. "I hate it too."

"The Day After Tomorrow" isn't quite the disaster of a disaster flick I thought it would be.
Don't get me wrong -- it's bad in a way only $150-million movies with awe-inspiring special effects can be bad. It's riddled with nonsensical pseudo-science, saddled with supposedly brainy characters (climatologists, high-school science whizzes) who nonetheless haven't a scrap of common sense, and stuffed with stock characters designed for the kind of instant sympathy (or instant comic relief) that doesn't require actually giving them a personality.
But for popcorn munching and smart-remarking during a bargain matinee, it's a bad movie worth the price of admission.

Jimmy Stewart would never have been able to cope with the giant rabbit that haunts Donnie Darko's demented waking nightmares. This thing is no friendly cottontail like Harvey. It's a macabre-looking monster with a hard, malformed pewter face, snaggled teeth and ominous blank eyes without pupils.
This rabbit's name is Frank, and he may or may not be a figment of the heavily medicated, intensely tormented imagination of the delusional teenage boy at the center of the engrossingly bizarre, mind-bending fringe film "Donnie Darko."
Whatever Frank is, it's his hypnotic influence over the eerily vexed title character (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) that launches him into a surreal labyrinth of increasingly esoteric encounters, starting the night Donnie sleepwalks away from his parents' house, seduced by the chilling sound of Frank's resonating, semi-synthetic voice. The world will end in 28 days, five hours, 52 minutes and 12 seconds, the diabolic bunny intones.
