'Nightcrawler' Might Be A Psychopath's Success Story, But That's Why We Love It

Jake Gyllenhaal Rene Russo

As 'Nightcrawler' hits UK shelves today, we delved deeper into the mind of the so-called protagonist. On the surface, it's a movie about a creepy guy with a ghoulish habit of photographing murder scenes, but look more carefully and you won't be so quick to dismiss Jake Gyllenhaal's dubious character as a regular psychopath.

Jake Gyllenhaal in 'Nightcrawler'
Jake Gyllenhaal seriously impressed critics with 'Nightcrawler' role

Clearly it's true that there's something a little morbid about showing up at the scene of a brutal killing, camera at the ready and with no intention of informing the police, but is it really so morally different from the global interest in ever more weird and grotesque stories and videos? Jake Gyllenhaal doesn't think so. 'It's a subversive comment on where we are today, not only with media but our need and our desperation for more information as a culture on a global level', he reveals. Though, the only difference being, according to him, is that Lou Bloom is chasing down serious stories while we mostly sit around watching cat virals.

Beyond Clueless Review

Excellent

With clips from more than 200 teen movies made in the decade after 1995's Clueless, this lively kaleidoscopic documentary entertainingly traces how America has depicted the teen experience on screen. The film's structure feels a little deliberate, and it of course is looking at a portrayal of puberty, not the real thing. But it's inventively edited by first-time feature director Charlie Lyne, with a snappy pace and some seriously interesting observations along the way.

These 10 years are significant because they marked an expansion in the style of coming-of-age movies, encompassing genres from comedy to sci-fi to horror to explore the clashes between high school factions of jocks, nerds, burnouts, artists and mean girls. Taken together, these films paint a vivid, perhaps exaggerated portrait of adolescence, including key rites of passage, the mob mentality, and the various things that feel threatening to the "herd" (like smart kids or loners). High school is the time when teens experiment with alcohol, partying, rebellion and sex, while facing up to peer pressure and their own mortality for the first time. And ultimately, everyone must navigate this emotionally overwrought period on his or her own.

The film breaks down this experience into five chapters: fitting in (as either a maverick or conformist), acting out (challenging the rules), losing yourself (developing your own identity), toeing the line (being forced to obey the rules) and moving on (growing into an adult). This kind of makes the movie feel like an academic thesis, especially with the somewhat overwritten narration (voiced by teen star Fairuza Balk). But the movie is packed with telling connections between this vast variety of movies, all of which reflect reality without ever depicting it too honestly. Thankfully, Lyne's editing is knowing and often very funny, putting scenes together to say something completely unexpected.

Tom Hardy Is Out Of The 'Suicide Squad' Movie, But Is Jake Gyllenhaal Next In Line For Rick Flagg Role?

Tom Hardy Jake Gyllenhaal

It’s time to shed a little tear at what could have been, as Tom Hardy is officially out of the upcoming ‘Suicide Squad’ movie. But luckily all is not lost for the supervillain collective, as Jake Gyllenhaal is said to be being eyed as Hardy’s replacement.

Tom HardyTom Hardy has left the 'Suicide Squad'.

The news of Hardy’s departure was first broken by The Hollywood Reporter yesterday, who also write that Warner Bros is now trying to land Jake Gyllenhaal for the role of Rick Flagg. Despite an Oscar snub Gyllenhaal is currently a hot commodity in Hollywood after his standout performance in Nightcrawler.

Enemy Review

Excellent

This may be a thriller starring Jake Gyllenhaal, but mainstream audiences should also note that this is an artful film that refuses to tell its story using the usual formula. For some viewers, this psychological angle will be exhilarating and challenging, although it might feel elusive to others. Either way, Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners) has boldly made a film that defies expectations and gives Gyllenhaal two of his strongest performances in years.

Yes, he plays two roles in this doppleganger mystery. We meet him as Adam, a Toronto history professor with a beautiful but busy girlfriend Mary (Melanie Laurent) and a dull repetitious life. One evening he watches a movie at home that features an extra who looks exactly like him, so he sets out to learn more about the actor, credited as "Daniel Saint Claire", although everyone calls him Anthony. Adam discovers that Anthony's wife Helen (Sarah Gadon) is six months pregnant, and when the two men meet they are both disarmed that they look so exactly alike, down to their scars. Adam's mother (Isabella Rossellini) insists that he doesn't have a long-lost twin. Then things start to take a darker turn as the two men begin to learn things about each other.

Director Villeneuve is superb at getting under the skin of his characters, and the film is shot and edited to take us right into Adam's troubled mind, revealing his more shadowy inner corners through movie clips and creepy cutaways that may or may not be part of Anthony's freaky secret life, which involves some sort of elite sex club. Villeneuve further builds the mood with a horror-style musical score (by Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans) and insinuating, sexy editing. He also resolutely refuses to explain what everything means, including the central plot itself, preferring to challenge viewers to internalise everything and discover their own explanation.

Jake Gyllenhaal Gets Ripped For Southpaw: Is There Anything He Can't Do?

Jake Gyllenhaal Rachel McAdams Naomie Harris Forest Whitaker 50 Cent Rita Ora Antoine Fuqua

Jake Gyllenhaal is a shape shifter. There is no other explanation. We barely recognised him whilst he was filming 'Nightcrawler', with his sunken cheeks and generally gaunt demeanour, but now he's transformed yet again into a sinewy muscle-man for his forthcoming boxing drama 'Southpaw'.

Gyllenhaal looks completely different to usualGyllenhaal looks completely different to usual

He's never exactly been a typecast actor, but it seems Jake Gyllenhaal can literally perform in any role. He can be unnerving ('Donnie Darko'), not to mention dedicated ('Brokeback Mountain') and now it seems he can manipulate his body in a matter of months. He lost thirty pounds to play the creepy, morally corrupt crime journalist Lou Bloom in Dan Gilroy's latest movie 'Nightcrawler', and now he's picked up his calorie intake and bulked up immensely to play a middle weight boxer in Antoine Fuqua's 'Southpaw'. We only wish we had that much self-discipline!

Nightcrawler Offers A New Antihero In Jake Gyllenhaal's Eerily Stunning Performance

Jake Gyllenhaal Dan Gilroy

Critics are comparing Jake Gyllenhaal to Robert De Niro for his committed performance in the creep-out thriller 'Nightcrawler'. This isn't just because he lost 30 pounds to play the part, or that he injured his hand by spontaneously punching a mirror on set. It's because his character is such a sympathetic monster.

Jake Gyllenhaal as Lou Bloom in 'Nightcrawler'
Jake Gyllenhaal stuns critics with 'Nightcrawler' performance

Lou Bloom is an ambitious guy who is willing to do far more than it takes to be successful at something, anything. 'It was a challenge on the page', Jake Gyllenhaal says. 'It is a brilliant screenplay, but how do I bring this to life? Lou is not just a three-dimensional character. He's a six-dimensional character! He's so well-prepared, he's like the Bobby Fischer of manipulators.'

Continue reading: Nightcrawler Offers A New Antihero In Jake Gyllenhaal's Eerily Stunning Performance

Nightcrawler Review

Excellent

A gently comical undertone makes this thriller even creepier than expected, bolstered by sharp writing and directing from Dan Giloy and an especially clever performance from Jake Gyllenhaal. Comparisons to Taxi Driver have been obvious, as the lead character is a potentially dangerous sociopath on a very personal quest. And the film also taps into the current zeitgeist: how the media panders to a public that increasingly screams for blood. It's a thoroughly unnerving film that often feels more like a very grim satire than a proper thriller.

Gyllenhaal plays Lou Bloom, a loner who is desperate to make his mark on the world. Searching for something to do, he stumbles across the people who prowl the city streets after dark in search of an event they can film and sell on to a TV news outlet. Learning from a veteran (Bill Paxton), Lou gets his own camera and a police scanner and starts chasing car crashes, house fires and violent crimes all over Los Angeles. And when he finds that TV news director Nina (Rene Russo) wants to buy his footage, he hires Rick (Riz Ahmed) as an assistant, getting even more aggressive about arriving on the scene before the competition. But Lou isn't willing to settle for that, and starts manipulating the news to get even better stories.

Where this goes from here is pretty unimaginable, as Lou reveals himself to be utterly unencumbered by any hint of a moral compass. Of course, this is a central theme of the movie, as it explores the way audiences clamour for more explosive footage, which pretty much eliminates any sense of human decency in the way events are covered. Gyllenhaal portrays Lou as gaunt and hungry, but with an eerie charm that lets him get away with each audacious manoeuvre. Watching him snap at anyone who crosses him is truly terrifying. Although the way he quietly manipulates situations is even scarier.

'Nightcrawler' Creeps To 90% As Gyllenhaal Turns In Best Performance

Jake Gyllenhaal

The pulsing new thriller Nightcrawler has reached a heady 90% score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes as critics wade in ahead of the movie's release on Friday (October 31, 2014). Fitting nicely with the Halloween period, the movie is a slimy, dark brooding tale of a young man who discovers the high-speed world of L.A crime journalism.

Jake Gyllenhaal Is Sad That He'll Never Get To Do Another 'Nightcrawler' Scene

Jake Gyllenhaal Dan Gilroy

With his new crime thriller 'Nightcrawler', Jake Gyllenhaal put a lot of himself into bringing a particularly unsettling character to life, namely by losing a lot of weight. But what was it about this movie that drew so much commitment from him?

Jake Gyllenhaal in 'Nightcrawler'
Jake Gyllenhaal looking gaunt in 'Nightcrawler'

Dan Gilroy's directorial debut has seen a stream of positive reviews since it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2014, and that's probably down to Jake Gyllenhaal's overwhelmingly unnerving interpretation of insistent and rather ghoulish crime journalist Louis Bloom. 'Lou is a creation of the American dream', Gyllenhaal explains. 'We're all told about this conventional idea of what success is and he'll do anything for it. Ultimately, it's someone like him who becomes one of the most successful entrepreneurs in America.'

Lou Bloom is a hard-working budding journalist whose deep obsession with his career has rendered him more than a little unstable. He traverses the LA streets at night, keeping an eager eye out for the frequently occuring violent crimes that swamp the darkness, and finds himself first on the scene with his camera for a series of serious incidents. It soon becomes clear that the the bloodier the crime he stumbles upon, the higher his pay rate is when he sells those first shots for the news; but that kind of exposure begins to seriously damage his mental health and general sense of morality. He decides to go for a job as a television newscaster, feeling thoroughly confident of his hard work over the years, and stands to live by his rather unnerving motto: 'If you want to win the lottery, you have to make the money to buy the ticket.'
