Jackson Browne and Patti Smith have become the latest rock veterans to walk away from their longtime record labels.

Browne has dumped Elektra after meeting his contractual obligations with the company, while Smith has announced her new album will be released by COLUMBIA after leaving Arista, the company she has worked with for 29 years.

Browne, who will be inducted into the ROCK + ROLL HALL OF FAME in March (04), is in the middle of completing work on a new album, which he plans to shop around to different labels.

He says, "I've had conversations with a couple of different people, but it's still not time (to make a decision).

"I have such difficulty talking to record companies before there's music to be played."
