Jackie Cooper, whose history in the movie business probably began before any other living actor, died Tuesday in Los Angeles at age 88. He first appeared in short films at the age of seven, then joined the ragged tykes in the early Our Gang comedy shorts a year later. At the age of 9, he became the youngest nominee ever for the best actor Oscar for his performance in the tear jerker Skippy . As an adult he would campaign against the exploitation of children in movies, writing a book about his childhood days in films witM*A*S*H the title, Please Don't Shoot My Dog , a reference to his own experience when, during the making of Skippy, director Norman Taurog, his uncle, threatened to shoot his dog in order to evoke tears from the boy. In later life, he turned to directing and helmed episodes of numerous hit TV shows, winning an Emmy in 1974 for an episode of M*A*S*H and another in 1979 for The White Shadow . He also appeared as Daily Planet editor Perry White in the four Christopher Reeve Superman movies between 1979 and 1987.
