Martial arts star Jackie Chan kicked off the New Year (13) by visiting the poverty-stricken Hebei province in China on Thursday (03Jan13) and donating over $480,000 (£300,000)-worth of clothes, medicines and food to needy villagers.
The Rush Hour actor made the generous donation via his Jackie Chan Charity Foundation, months after handing over more than $64,000 (£40,000) to build a motor-pumped water well in the remote village of Wangjiawan in a bid to overcome severe drought issues.
The well was completed in December (12) and Chan and a group of local celebrities headed to the area last week (ends04Jan13) to see the pump in action and give out much-needed basic necessities.
And the star credits the power of social networking and the press with helping to bring the plight of Wangjiawan residents to his attention.
He says, "I have to say 'thank you' to the reporters who have reported the poverty in this place. I hope they can cover more impoverished places like here. China is so big that my charity fund and I are not able to know the hardships everywhere. We can only get to know these impoverished areas through news reports. That is why I have to say 'Thank you' to the media."
