The organised crime boss Jack Nicholson loosely based his The Departed thug on has been captured by the Fbi after 16 years on the run.
James 'Whitey' Bulger, one of the Fbi's 10 most wanted fugitives, was arrested in Santa Monica, California, on Wednesday (22Jun11).
Bulger is charged with 19 counts of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, extortion, narcotics distribution and money laundering charges, and will make his first court appearance on Thursday (23Jun11).
He was an Fbi informant before he fled in 1995 after an Fbi agent tipped him off about an impending racketeering indictment.
The Fbi offered a $2 million (Gbp1.25 million) reward for information leading directly to the arrest of the 81 year old.
The authorities credit a new publicity effort for the tips that led them to Bulger and his girlfriend, who was also arrested. On Tuesday (21Jun11), the Fbi began airing a 30-second public service announcement in 14 cities across the U.S.
Bulger has been in hiding since 1995. The Fbi put Bulger on its most wanted list in 1999.
