Actor Jack Nicholson has paid a special tribute to his late pal HUNTER S THOMPSON with a hand-drawn portrait of the writer.

In the sketches, photographs of which were obtained by PEOPLE magazine, Nicholson depicts Thompson with his trademark cigarette, cap and sunglasses, alongside quotes such as "All were not wrong" and "How'd ya like the elk heart".

Thompson once famously delivered a bleeding elk heart to Nicholson's house as a joke.

Nicholson was among 150 of Thompson's closest friends and family - including Johnny Depp, John Cusack, Bill Murray and SEAN PENN - who gathered at Aspen, Colorado's Hotel Jerome on Saturday (05MAR05) for a private memorial service for Thompson, who committed suicide at his ranch on 20 February (05).
