Legendary rocker Jack Bruce once turned down an offer to join The Shadows, the pop group who started out backing housewives' favourite SIR Cliff Richard.

Bassist Bruce still finds it amazing he was asked to join suit-wearing instrumentalists The Shadows shortly after he parted ways with proto-heavy metal trio Cream in the late 1960s.

In new book THE BIOGRAPHY OF JACK BRUCE, author STEVEN MYATT writes: "The job offer that was most surprising, and which delights and amuses Jack to this day, came from (Shadows leader HANK) Marvin.

"But that sort of music wasn't Jack's thing. He wouldn't have been happy in the smart uniform, let alone playing someone else's bass parts on three minute singles."
