America's box office has gone to the animated fishes again thanks to a staggering $49 million (GBP27.2 million) opening for DREAMWORKS studio's SHARK TALE.

The film, which features the voices of Jack Black, Robert De Niro, WILL SMITH, Renee Zellweger and Angelina Jolie, was expected to fight for the top spot this weekend (03OCT04) with John Travolta's firefighting drama LADDER 49, but the figures weren't even close.

Travolta's film opened in second place with a healthy $22.8 million (GBP12.6 million).

Former top films The Forgotten and Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow both had healthy second and third weeks taking their tallies to $38.2 million (GBP21.2 million) and $30.7 million (GBP17 million) respectively.
