The Westchester County District Attorney began its investigation last week (24Jul15) after discovering the illegal activity stemmed from an IP address assigned to Alexander's home, according to a statement from the DA's office.

After obtaining a search warrant, officials found digital files featuring "illegal and obscene performances of sexual conduct by children less than 17 years of age" on his computers and external hard drives.

He was subsequently was arrested and charged with felony counts of promoting a sexual performance by a child and possessing an obscene sexual performance by a child for allegedly distributing the files online.

Alexander is being held on $10,000 (£6,250) bail, and is scheduled to appear in court on 19 November (15).

If convicted, he faces a maximum of seven years behind bars.

Alexander, who also directed a number of episodes of Rescue Me, was also the co-executive producer for Royal Pains and The Blacklist, and acted in films such as Clueless, Eight Men Out, and Crocodile Dundee II.
