Q&A with Sam Roberts Band

Introduce yourself!
My name is Sam Roberts, I am one-fifth of the Sam Roberts Band from Montreal, Canada

You have been writing and performing for a number of years now. When did you decide you wanted to make music your career?
I started playing in my first band in the 8th grade in 1988 here in Montreal and my decision to make it a career came soon after. We started writing songs, playing shows at high-school parties and dressing like our favourite rock n rollers. We were convinced that a big-break was just around the corner. It took fifteen years of this kind of delusional thinking before it actually happened

What kind of feelings does your own music evoke?
Ultimately I want it to be uplifting but I want you to have to work to get there, to have to struggle to balance the dark with the light, the despair with hope or redemption. Rock n roll music has to reflect life in all of its many shades - the simplest, most whimsical songs are sometimes the best way to talk about the apocalypse

What was the first song you ever wrote about?
I was really into the Smiths at the time and loved the song 'Girlfriend In A Coma." I wanted to take it a step further and so wrote a song about a girlfriend who died.It was a horrible song, devoid of any real melody or lyrical purpose. To this day, I'm not sure why I didn't say to myself "Well, at least you tried, but you're pretty terrible at this and ought never to do it again.."

What was the last song you wrote about?
I've just finished writing a song about my parent's hometown of Durban, South Africa. It'll be on our next record

If you could do a duet with any one singer, living or dead, who would you choose? Why?
Gordon Lightfoot. He's one of the greatest Canadian musicians and storytellers and there's a helluva lot I'd like to learn from him

What's your favorite album to listen to after a bad breakup?
Happy Mondays "Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches.." 'cause there's no time to mope about!

Who are your musical influences?
Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan, Fela Kuti, Hawkwind, Gram Parsons, The Smiths, The Clash, Leonard Cohen, Spirtualized

You have just performed in London. What's your favourite thing about coming to the
UK?
I love a good pub. Too much perhaps, but hell, you're the ones who made them so inviting.

How do you get in the zone for live performance?
Pints

Can we expect a new album any time soon?
I've been writing an album in my basement through the Canadian winter months (that's when most creative thinking happens around here.the summer is too short and too precious to be holed-up indoors). We'll be recording in May and hopefully get some new music out in the months to follow.
