At the tender age of 20, Freja has managed to compose a stunning debut EP filled with delicate vocals and beautiful piano-led melodies throughout. The 'Ghosts' EP is a coming age record written by Freja in her teenage years about love, loss and life. We caught up with Freja to see what she has planned next:
Hi Freja, please introduce yourself:
Hey, I'm Freja, a singer/songwriter from London. I've just finished working on my debut EP Ghosts, which is being released online on the 27th November.
How did you get into songwriting?
It was actually watching the film School of Rock at the age of nine that got me into songwriting, I'd written quite a bit of poetry before that but then I saw the film and it showed kids around my age performing and writing their own songs and I thought that was awesome so I started writing my own lyrics.
What inspires you musically and non-musically?
I'm inspired by anything with dark or emotional lyrics to be honest, my biggest lyrical influence is definitely My Chemical Romance, I'm also big fan of the Smiths, Radiohead and Lydia and lately I've been very into Florence and the Machine and Tom Odell. Non-musically I can be influenced by anything emotive - in my life, other people's lives or even in books I read.
What's the theme behind your EP 'Ghosts'?
I wanted to start by releasing some of my earlier music so I chose four of my favourite songs I'd written as a teenager. There's not really an intentional theme beyond the fact that they're all from the same period of my life.
Do you have a specific method when it comes to writing songs?
I'll usually start off with the title, or a phrase or word I want to use and work around that. I'll almost always write the lyrics first and work out the melody as I go and then I'll write the piano. But it can vary, sometimes I'll do the whole thing in half an hour, other times I'll be thinking of bits of tune and lyrics and piano parts separately for a few weeks and eventually piece them together.
If you could collaborate with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be?
I'd love to collaborate with Kurt Cobain. He was an incredible lyricist and guitarist; it would've been amazing to work on something acoustic with him, maybe with a sound similar to Something in the Way.
Where would be your favourite place to perform live?
I went to a small festival in Kent last year called In The Woods, they had a variety of up and coming artists playing there and it had a really magical atmosphere. That's somewhere I'd love to play.
Where do you see yourself in ten years time?
I don't tend to plan that far ahead but I'd like to have released a few albums by then and I'll probably still be gigging and writing new music.
How would you describe your sound?
I kind of suck at describing my sound; it's basically just sad songs on piano, very lyrically and vocally driven.
