Son of Harold Braff, an attorney and sociology professor, and Anne Brodzinsky, a clinical psychologist, Zach was born in South Orange, New Jersey.
From a young age, Braff attended Stagedoor Manor - a training centre for children involved in performing arts. This came from his lifelong dream to become a filmmaker.

Braff started his acting career with the television movie High in 1989, which never actually aired. His first appearance was then on the 1990s show The Baby-sitters Club. In 1993, Braff appeared in the Woody Allen film Manhattan Murder Mystery before having a part in Macbeth in 1998 at New York City's Public Theatre.
His starring role came in 2001 when he played John Dorian in the ABC sitcom Scrubs. His work on the show caused him to be nominated for three Golden Globe awards and an Emmy.
Zach Braff also wrote, directed, produced and starred in 2004's Garden State. The soundtrack to won a Grammy for Best Compilation Soundtrack for a Motion Picture, Television or other Visual Media.
His 2014 film, Wish I was Here, was funded via Kickstarter, raising it's 2 million USD budget in three days. The film was written by Zach and his brother Adam Braff, with Zach both directing and starring in the picture.

Braff has held a pilots licence since 2008. The year after earning this licence in a Cirrcus SR20, he began a relationship with model Taylor Bagley which lasted until 2014.
In 2012, Braff supported Barack Obama in the presidential election, despite being ninth cousin of Mitt Romney on his mother's side.
